Day 18
Saint-Cirque-Lapopie or bust

We packed up our things following our delicious lunch and headed off to Saint-Cirque-Lapopie, a plus beaux village de France. Our walk was about 4kms and the majority of it was along the river on fairly flat terrain. However, the last 600 metres was a very steep ascent. It was very challenging, especially as the humidity had started to increase. We all made it to the top I am pleased to report.

We then had some time to wander around this beautiful medieval village, which emerges from the rock 100 metres above the river. Once host to a prosperous river trade, and renowned for its wood-turners, the village has conserved its heritage and retained an irresistible charm. As of the late 19th and early 20th century, it attracted artists belonging to the Surrealist Movement. It still has this artistic dimension as you explore the narrow streets. French poet and writer André Breton, who bought a house in the village, put Saint-Cirque-Lapopie on the map in a big way. He said: “Here, I’ve ceased wishing myself elsewhere”. You can easily see why.

After our visit, we had to climb even higher to rendezvous with Julien who took us back to Cahors in the bus.Read more
Traveler This was a favourite day of mine - beautiful walk, picnic and more walks. The village was idyllic and good for the sole to wonder around…

One of the oldest villages in France fully restored and spectacular. It is situated on a large cliff 100m above the valley below. Also in the offical club of prettiest french villages. It just amazes us how many history and beauty there is here.Read more

Kastanjer, vinstokke og stendiger

Vi har overnattet lidt udenfor landsbyen St. Jean en Minervois.
Det er et område med kastanjer (af den slags der kan spises!), som vi kører igennem fra morgenstunden, med kastanjetræer og -skov langs vejen. Men vi fik samlet nogle i går, så vi kører roligt af små veje mod nordvest. Kommer snart ind i områder hvor vinen overtager. Småbakket og med vinmarker så langt øjet rækker, og hver en landsby har vinsmagning og salg af vin fra de små gårde. Jeg tænker på kontrasten mellem kastanjen, som virkelig har været en basisfødevare hernede, og lidt fattigmandskost som kartoflen i nord, og så de enorme arealer, der bliver brugt til vindyrkning. Selvfølgelig også basisvin - men også finere vin til de riges bord - her i næsten samme område!
Der er ingen større byer på vores vej, men masser af landsbyer med stenhuse og tilgroede og mosbeklædte stendiger mellem græsmarker og skov, som vidner om, at vores forfædre har været meget flittige til at ryde marker for sten i sin tid!
Landsbyerne omkring floden Lot, som vi kommer til sidst på dagen, er meget velbevarede, og nogle totalt friholdt for nybyggeri, så det er nærmest som et lille frilandsmuseum at gå rundt i! Vi overnatter ved kanten af floden Lot og landsbyen Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.Read more

Day 4 • Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

Already a fabulous day, and we still had Saint-Cirq-Lapopie to look forward to. After the chemin de halage, we had a short few kms to walk along the river, followed by a steep 600 metre climb that would take us directly to the main square of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.

What a delightful village - winding cobble stone streets, stone and timber houses, charming artisan and produce shops, cafes, restaurants, glaciers, market umbrellas and colourful flower boxes, fantastic views in every direction.

We stayed at the excellent Auberge Sombral, spent the afternoon strolling around the village, enjoyed an aperitif with a French couple we'd met along the way - first in Le Picarel chambre d'hote on Day 2 of our walk and again in Cabrerets. They were also staying at the Auberge . Later in the evening, a yummy dinner at Le Gourmet Quercynois.

Yes, it's 'touristy' compared to where we've been - but why wouldn't people want to visit such a fabulous town. We didn't find it crowded - especially in the evening. If you have the opportunity to visit here - even stay the night - it's a treat. My photos don't do it justice - I think I was a little tired after walking in the heat of the day. But this Tourisme de Lot site gives some history and delightful descriptions.

Tomorrow morning, we'll go back the way we came to rejoin the camino path and make our way to Bouzies and beyond. Usually having to retrace 4 or 5 kms would be a bit of a chore - but not this time. We are delighted to have the chance to walk the chemin de halage again, from the other direction. More photos and another video to come tomorrow😎Read more
