      Saint-Émilion

      August 1, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We left the little farm house in the morning to tour Chateau de Franc Baudron, the vineyard next door through whose vines we had unwittingly wandered the day before, and were met by Chloé (the guide) and Rose (the dog) who showed us to the vines for the first part of our tour. After answering our many questions about the plants, the soil, and the topography, Chloé showed us through the sheds (old and new) used for packing, bottling and fermenting, explained the different processes for the natural wines compared to the more traditional barrel aged varieties. We then retired to the tasting room and tried five of the wines and (naturally) bought some to bring home. Alas, the famous family sheep, Fantine, did not make an appearance.

We then jumped back into the car and headed to Saint-Emilion proper to take in some sites. By far our most tourist heavy destination so far, we found ourselves surrounded by English speakers as we stopped for lunch in the very hot town square. After some minor exploration, we booked onto a tour of the Monolithic Church for later in the afternoon and took ourselves off to the wine caves at the edge of town to seek refuge amongst the bottles. There was lots of wine. Lots and lots of wine. After a look at the bell tower and the medieval gate we joined our tour to explore the main monuments. We were guided through the hermitage of St Emilion, the 13th century chapel, the catacombs and finally the Monolithic church itself, which was vast!

After finishing our tour we ventured to our accommodation in Libourne, only a 15 minute drive away, and were greeted by Patricia and her granddaughters who showed us in and made us feel right at home. Eden (the very friendly dog) also made an appearance. After a quick rest, we made our way to the quay to finally set eyes on the Dordogne River at its confluence with the Isle. We enjoyed some wine and pate as the sun set over the river.

      Saint Émilion

      August 6, 2020 in France ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Went on another wee train trip today to the well preserved medieval town of St Émilion, famous for its red wine. Like many French towns, the station was a bit out of the centre and involved a 25 minute walk into the town. However this was very pleasant as it passed alongside the vineyards. Did a recommended walking tour around various churches and monuments which were lovely. However, it got too hot (35 degrees!) so I sat in a lovely wee shaded restaurant balcony and had a very leisurely lunch. The service was painfully slow, but the young waitress was smiling and friendly and doing her best, and I was in no rush. The food was delicious - a very tasty gazpacho, complete with a dollop of refreshing sorbet on top, followed by a lovely roast pork, all washed down with local wine and a much needed litre of sparkling water.

The train back to Bordeaux failed to appear until 45 minutes after its scheduled time, by which time us passengers were melting in the searing heat at an old closed, unmanned station with no facilities. I tell you it was straight to the on board toilet when the train did arrive after that litre of water!

      Vin Vin Vin

      August 8, 2019 in France ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

      St. Emilion

      April 18, 2019 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Read more

      Saint Emillion- Wine Country!

      August 20, 2015 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Following our airbnb hosts recommendation we head to Saint Emilion to visit the "chateaus" for some wine tasting. When he first explained it he said the chateaus are castles, where you can go for tours.. our response was not very enthusiastic until we realised that they are actually wineries that take you for a tour of their estate and end with a wine tasting- we're in!

The wine tasting in the area is quite different to what we are used to: you need to make an appointment to go. First stop we head to Saint Emilion town centre which we discover is a beautiful little historic town. Next we head to one of the chateaus of the day, Chateau Bernateou- a family run business that has been handed down 8 generations, they produce only 100,000 bottles of wine each year. We get a very personalised and detailed tour of the winery, including the vineyards, hoppers and barrels. We are impressed by the level of detail that goes into the wine making- they use an optical sorter to check every single grape! The wines are delicious so we pick up a few bottles for our picnic lunch and Deb orders a case to ship home.

Next stop a fancy looking winery with the prestigious "Grand Cru Classic" classification for their wines. We actually weren't that impressed by the wines (and at 10euro each for the tasting it was a bit steep) but their estate is gorgeous, sat on top of a hill overlooking the entire region and complete with fancy looking castle, so was definitely worth the visit.

Back to Bordeaux for dinner and a walk down the riverside.. there are people everywhere still at 11pm, just wandering around, chatting and dancing! Got to love the lifestyle here :-)

      Frankreich, Saint Émilion

      August 30, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Saint-Emilion

      September 25, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Saint-Emilion. We've been looking forward to visiting this town and its well-regarded wines. In contrast to Libourne with its center square and streets on a grid, Saint-Emilion is located on a hill with steep and narrow streets. Even with a map it was confusing. Its history goes back to prehistoric times and the Romans planted vineyards here in the 2nd century. It was renamed after the monk Emilion from the 8th century. He settled in a hermitage carved into a rock. The monks who followed him began the commercial wine production in the area. Today the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our local guide gave us a brief tour of the town including the Collegiate Church and Cloisters. Then we set off to sample the wine. We found a little open air bar. Ron has been studying French on Duolingo. He ordered us a bottle of wine and four glasses. It was a lovely day and we enjoyed the sunshine and the wine. The streets were confusing but we just headed downhill towards the river to our ship.Read more

    • Day 11

      Saint Emilion

      February 18, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

A gentle bike ride through the vineyards and up the gentle slope to the village of St Emilion. Almost Tuscan-like with yellow soft stone buildings and cobbled streets, the village was at its heyday in the 1200s. The village envelops a hollow in the hills creating an upper and a lower village with steep roads or Tetres connecting them.

Lunch at the cafe in the town square under the walls of the monolithic church with a couple of bloody and tough but tasty steaks, washed down with beer or wine. We bought local specialty canelés from a small shop.

Rather a wet ride back in the afternoon through more villages, but wine tasting at Chateau Gerbaud cave in the evening restored us.
