      The day it got real!

      January 26, 2020 in France ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

After an goodbye at Simpelveld, we arrived at our stop for tonight. Almost 5 hours drive.
It was a challenge to get here. Lieske has to fight against the, sometimes, steep hills.
      But we made it.
Now. Eat. Sleep. And tomorrow ..
      ..another destination.

      Sezanne

      May 6, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Flat fast and flies. And forgettable. I spent an hour wandering around the gardens of the chateau at Fontainebleau which were lovely ( and free) so decided not to pay the dosh to look at some fusty old furniture- for another day. Overnight rain and early morning mist cleared to reveal a still, sunny day. Some lovely cycling through the forest- firstly on ordered tree lined avenues then fast "single track" put a smile on my face. I dropped down to the Seine which I then followed for the rest of the day. This seemed a much more functional France- industrial and less picture-postcard. The river/ canal side path deteriorated until it was an uncyclable overgrown jungle - with loads of flies. Keep your moth shut whilst your cycling! Architecture has subtly changed- timber framed houses with red brick bits. Lots of oilseed rape, wheat, and wind turbines.. The last 15k was an imperceptible climb out of the Seine valley and suddenly I'm back amongst vines: champagne country.

Ps very excited to get a mention on Radcliffe and Maconie radio 6 today! About 10 mins in when you were all asleep!

      Day 4: Montmort - Sezanne

      August 16, 2016 in France ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

      Distance: 31km
      Weather: 29C, felt like 34!
      Mood: Good, bit more social
      Blisters: 3 (2 new!)

      The "unwinding" road

Time for something different today. My day started with 5 kilometers along a grassy straight path through farmlands with absolutely nothing else around. The Beatles song The long and winding Road came into my mind, though this road was anything but windy and I realised that the hiker-me is different from the everyday-me. Usually I love shortcuts, the quickest way to get somewhere in the most efficient manner, but the hiker-me likes the bends in the road, the corner that may bring something interesting to see and the turn the guidebook describes is coming up soon. It keeps the journey interesting and straight roads are just a bit... boring. But I manned up, counted steps and marched on and finally I saw the end of the road (see pictures below) and the funny thing was that the road on the other side was pretty much the same, long and un-winding. In fact, most of the long route today was like that! It's almost like this camino gives you what you don't desire, so you can meditate on it. Let's see how unwindy the roads are tomorrow.

Oh and, I did meet some really lovely Scottish people who offered to heat my food and I sat with them for most of the evening, hence why this post is later than usual!

      Sommerurlaub 2010 – 15.09.2010

      September 15, 2010 in France ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Also Frühstück im Park.

DANKE nochmal an alle Tippgeber.

      Abfahrt: 19.50 Uhr, 230197 km
      Ankunft: 21.15 Uhr, 230284 km

      87 km
