      Day 35 and 36

      September 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Day 35 - we did a walking tour of Rouen where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. We visited the Joan of Arc church. At La Couronne restaurant, the oldest restaurant in France they serve "pressed duck" where they squeeze the duck blood and make it into a sauce. Yuk. This restaurant has a Michelin star rating.

Day 36 - we started by visiting the Tapestry in Bayeux. The tapestry is an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long and 50 cm tall that depicts the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England led by William the Conquerer challenging Harold II, King of England.

From there we went to Juno Beach where the Canadian contingent of the D Day landing came ashore on 6 June, 1944.

Next stop was the Pegasus Bridge Museum. The original bridge was removed and put in the museum grounds and a replica bridge was constructed in the original location. The taking of this bridge is still regarded as one of most daring and successful aviation missions of World War 2. The gliders carrying 25 soldiers each were used at night so that they could land undectected as the bridge needed to be taken in tact.

Our final stop was at the Ranville War Cemetery where John and I placed a wreath provided by Viking Cruises at the foot of the only two Australian airmen buried there. The Australian National Anthem was then played and a minute's silence observed.

I luoghi dello sbarco in Normandia

      August 18, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

È ancora possibile visitare i bunkers tedeschi.

Omaha Beach & Normandy American Cemetery

      October 22, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

This morning, we set off to visit the Normandy Beaches, the site of the allied forces' amphibious landing that began the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany and led to the end of WWII.

Our first stop was Omaha Beach, which, along with Utah Beach, was assigned to the American forces.

We also toured the Normandy American Cemetery, the final resting place of so many young men who gave their lives to ensure our freedom.

      2. Etappe - Omaha Beach

      August 17, 2020 in France ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Omaha Beach

      September 23, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

The beaches where the Allies landed on June 6, 1944 occupy sacred ground. One can only imagine the feelings of the nineteen and twenty year old men who jumped from the landing craft on that summer morning. Most expected to die on those beaches. In the first wave most did. Some did not even make it out of the landing craft. The weather today was raw—30 mph gusts blowing sand into your eyes. The temperature is a chilly, wet and windy fifty-five degrees. Yet the rain and wind today made for conditions similar to those experienced by the GI’s in 1944. Over nine thousand young Americans lie sleeping on the cliff they captured from Germans of the same age in 1944. Yet these patriots sleep in American soil. The French government gave these 170 acres to the United States in 1965 to say “thank you” for the permanent sacrifice of these young men and the four young women nurses who still lie here. They gave their lives because they believed that people should live in freedom rather than tyranny. Being here reminds me again of the cost of freedom. It also reminds me that America cannot be great unless she is good. I hope she still is.Read more

      Pause am Omaha Beach

      August 15, 2016 in France ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Omaha Beach

      October 7, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Omaha was the most difficult of the D-Day beaches to assault. Nicknamed “Bloody Omaha,” nearly half of all D-Day casualties were suffered here.

There are two memorial statues in the center of the beach:

The older memorial is from 1949. Built by thankful French, it was funded by selling scrap metal after the war and honors the two assaulting divisions, the 29th and 1st. A striking modern metal statue (The Braves, 2004) rises from the waves in honor of the liberating forces and symbolizes the rise of freedom on the wings of hope.

      Die Helden der Normandie

      August 3, 2019 in France ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
