      Camping Vizzavona

      Gestern Abend gab es noch eine böse Überraschung : eins der Mädels hat sich scheinbar Bettwanzen eingefangen und wir durften nicht mehr in dem Quartier schlafen.
      Als wir aus Corte zurück kamen, mussten wir auf den ziemlich vollen Zeltplatz wechseln.
      In Frankreich ist August der Haupturlaubsmonat- so sah der Campingplatz auch aus 😳
      Aber die Nacht war ruhig bis auf ein kräftiges Gewitter um 3h.

      Frühstück bei frischen 15°C

      Gut, dass ich warme Sachen dabei habe. Ich bin auf 1.150m, oben auf 2.000m wird es nochmals 5-10°C kälter sein.
      Aber zur Thema: tolles Frühstück, die Bedienung bringt auch immer noch eine Überraschung: Obstsalat, Joghurt, ein gekochtes Ei…
      Jetzt bin ich genudelt.
      Man merkt aber auch, dass dies kein GR20-Wanderer Hotel ist: ich bin um 7:30 Uhr der einzige Gast (früher ging nicht). Ich denke drüben im Halte Du Prince sind schon alle voll dabei oder aufgebrochen.
      Apropos aufgebrochen: das werde ich jetzt auch mal tun. Nachdem ich die 18€ für das Frühstück gezahlt habe.      Read more

      Day 8

      Rest day turned last day

      Today's goal was mostly to investigate how to best continue our journey. We head on a short one hour hike to Vizzavona, where the southern part of the GR20 ends and the northern higher altitude part starts.

      Besides finding a big lunch at a local restaurant, we also find Emile, the local "wise old man" when it comes to mountaineering in this area. We go over maps of the upcoming hikes and he shows us all the potential hazards (=mostly snow on steep parts of the trail as well as snow slides due to all the late snow they got this year).

      The result: most of the days (including tomorrow's) are still covered in too much snow on dangerously steep slopes too continue. And we decide to come back for the North half of the trail another year, instead of going around all the fun and most scenic parts of this trail now. And the alternative isn't bad: 2 weeks of climbing the mountains we've already fallen in love with :)      Read more

      Route finding a must

      Waking up with out the sound of rain on the tent gives us hope, and when we stick our heads out for a peak and see blue sky we look to each other and say "we're clear for our summit bid". We kick it into high gear to leave camp as quickly as possible, our goal for the day is another alpine variant over the top of the South's highest peak, Monte Renoso.

      As we walk out of camp Mareike mentions a trail that will save us an hour getting to our approach. We quickly agree this is the best option and vear from the GR20, climbing the forested hills from rock cairn to rock cairn in route to the i'Pozzi bivouac.

      From the base of the approach we keep a close eye on the skies around us, we both know that thunderstorms end our journey to the top. We use our ice axes and crampons to reach the first saddle and pull out the map and GPS to confirm and discuss our route. From here we find the trail to not be much more difficult than other parts of our journey. We are able to reach the summit with only a couple short climbing sections and celebrate the top of Monte Renoso with sugary dragon tongue candy.

      Mareike brings up another variation to our trail down that would save us a day on the trail and keep us out of the valley. It's a ridge trail that connects into another trail that is supposed to be fun for kids, in the end we both highly doubted people take their kids here.

      There's not enough space to tell the story of the next 6 hours of our journey. It's a story to share over a hot meal or a cold beer with friends and family. We became stronger yet as a team as we negotiated thick fog, trails that seemed to end in cliffs, trails that were nonexistent, looming rock towers and snowfields that would play hide and seek and numerous up and down climbs through the granite. In the end we felt like we had the best adventure yet and truly used all of our mountain knowledge along the way. We also couldn't have been happier to get off our feet and lie down after a 12 hour day.      Read more

      Mit dem TGV in die Hauptstadt

      Ganz oben auf meiner Wunschliste für den Urlaub stand eine Fahrt mit der korsischen Eisenbahn. Alle Reiseführer-/ berichte schwärmen davon. Die Hauptstrecke von Bastia nach Ajaccio führt auf 1-Meter-Schmalspur-Gleisen quer über die Gebirgsrücken der Insel. Der höchste Punkt bei Vizzavona liegt knapp 900 Meter hoch. Da die Hauptstadt Korsikas ebenfalls auf dem Programm stand, machten wir kurzerhand "aus der Not eine Tugend" und besuchten Ajaccio mit der Bahn. Mit dem Auto ging es nach Corte und von da jeweils 2 Stunden mit der Bahn nach Ajaccio und zurück. Ein beeindruckendes Erlebnis, sowohl die Natur im Inselinneren als auch die Fahrt selbst.
      Anmerkung: natürlich hat Korsika keinen Hochgeschwindigkeitszug. Das insgesamt 230 km große Bahnnetz verläuft ausschließlich auf 1-Meter-Gleisen, zu einem großen Teil abenteuerlich in die Felsen gehauen. Die Korsen nennen ihre Bahn wegen der teils ruckeligen Streckenführung „Train à Grande Vibration“ (TGV), frei übersetzt Wackelzug ;-)      Read more

      Onda .... Vizzavona

      Bon c'est quoi le programme aujourd'hui....
      13,630 km, D+ 787 m/ D- 1237 m ... aïe aïe aïe ça va descendre .... je préviens quand même les genoux...😫😫
      Vizzavona c'est là la frontière... fini le nord ...on passe en Corse du Sud ... donc on abandonne le minéral pour retrouver un peu de vert ....genre fougères et pins🤩🤩
      Bon, ce matin faut démarrer fort ... 2h de montée non stop ... 750 m de D+ sans échauffement...ça réveille...bon ben ça fait un petit dej en hauteur ça ... et donc un nouveau lever de soleil magnifique sur les roches de Corse du nord. Le spectacle est tellement grandiose que l'on peut apercevoir la brèche de Capitellu que j'ai passée il y a 2 jours.... c'est loin ...et cela témoigne du chemin parcouru entre monts et vallées et arêtes 💪💪💪
      Ensuite ce n'est que descente ...d'abord du caillou ... com'd'hab .... des rochers ... com'd'hab et ensuite de la forêt ...c'est bon ça .... ça sent le sud et ça change un peu ....
      Une rivière se pointe à nous ...il est 9h30 certains se baignent déjà... elle est froide et à l'ombre leur baignade ...je décide de ne pas m'arrêter car je sais qu'il y a du dénivelé à se faire encore et je préfère me baigner quand le soleil aura chauffé la roche et réchauffé l'eau.
      J'ai descendu 1000 m, il ne me reste plus que 200 m à descendre ...je trouve dans la cascades des anglais un magnifique endroit pour me baigner où il y a une belle cascade et un immense trou d'eau où je n'ai même pas pied.
      3/4 d'heure à nager .... j'avais absolument besoin de ça car il fait très chaud.
      Malheureusement les touristes qui peuvent venir en voiture commencent à arriver et envahir "mon trou d'eau", "ma bassine".... bon enfin bref ...je repars croise des collègues randonneurs et faisons une pause coca avant la longue descente sur un large sentier vers la gare de Vizzavona.
      La journée d'hier m'a pas mal entamé... je m'arrache pour laver mes affaires ..je n'ai plus rien de propre, me laver .... faire des courses pour les prochains jours et faire une grosse pause car le manque de sommeil récurrent se fait bien sentir. Je commence à avoir le quadri droit douloureux.
      Je réussi à contacter Nellie qui a obtenu une chambre mais qui est toujours en attente de soins ....
      Ma tente ⛺️ est toujours en plein cagnard ...il fait chaud et on tape la discut en attendant que le frais arrive ...Pffff... compte là-dessus 😫😫😫
      Nellie me propose de prendre une chambre à l'hôtel comme on l'avait prévu au départ ... et je trouve l'idée bonne pour essayer de récupérer et dormir dans un lit.... aussitôt dit aussitôt fait ... je prends une chambre à 140 balles pour moi tout seul 🤑🤑🤑 et on réserve à plusieurs le repas du soir à mon hôtel.....
      Cela sera bénéfique ...un bon repas conclu par un fondant à la châtaigne 🌰 et une nuit presque complète.... Yesssss      Read more
