Chiediamo scusa ai nostri followers per l'assenza! Ma eravamo occupati a mangiare patine e waffle (full reportage fra poco).

Per la nostra ultima soirée francaise abbiamo continuato con l'eplorazione delle birre (Ipa Hirondelle e La Bise au fruits rouges).
Per stare leggeri dopo la birra abbiamo cenato con una teglia (a testa) di pane inzuppato nella birra, prosciutto e formaggio fuso (welsh).
Vorremo inoltre invitare i francesi, visto il precedente della Gioconda, a rubare anche alcune abitudini italiane quali l'uso del bidet e l'utilizzo di appositi contenitori per lo scopettino del wc (non del pentole). Un bacio.Read more

Breakfast and more exploring

We headed out to do some more exploring and also grab some breakfast - not something all cafés in France offer. After wandering around for a bit we found Café Peacock that offered a really great petite déjeuner. We got baguette with jam, a croissant, pain chocolate and escargot, a juice and a coffee.

After breakfast we wandered around till 11am and then headed back to the Airbnb to finish packing, checked out and decided we would head back to Belgium.

We had a great run back to Limal with very little traffic to contend with. Brigitte was going to cook but I suggested we eat out, so we returned to Brasserie Martine where we had moules- something I had been hanging out for. I also had tiramisu with speculoos for dessert which was fabulous and I am back to drinking a Ristretto as the coffee with milk is too inconsistent re flavour.Read more

Magnificent Lille

Once we finished our lunch at Chez Brigitte we were ready to do some exploring of the old city. Lille is a beautiful city that has so many glorious buildings, with most in great condition or in the process of being restored. Being there on a beautifully warm and sunny day with a brilliant blue sky also didn’t hurt.

We meandered down the narrow streets, making our way to Place du Général-de-Gaulle, also known as the Grand Place. This square is magnificent with beautifully restored buildings on a grand scale. We just wandered around for a while longer and then went to the car, grabbed our luggage and made our way to our Airbnb, which was spacious, lovely and comfortable.

We were still so full from lunch we opted to stay in, have a baguette with some cheese and get a relatively early night.Read more

Uiteindelijk hebben we de metro maar genomen omdat het bleef regenen. Toen Marian eenmaal een hippe regenjas had gekocht, werd het droog en begon zelfs de zon te schijnen. Dag is nooit zo nat of zun schient altied wat!Read more

Lunch in Lille

Today is a good day, first the weather is once again fine and sunny, second we are off to Lille in France and third my parcel of winter clothes was finally delivered and there was much rejoicing!

It was such a relief for my winter clothes to arrive because as much as this girl likes to shop I really wanted my puffer jacket and boots as they are both so comfortable to wear.

We headed off for Lille a bit before 11 and arrived just after 1pm. We found a park not too far from our Airbnb, but we cannot get in till 4pm, so we went in search of lunch.

We came across a restaurant called Chez Brigitte and I immediately said we must go there for lunch. The place was pretty full but they had a table for us. We had the plat de jour, but only two courses (entree and main) and a lovely bottle of Pinot. Entree was a delicious soup and main was confit pork with mash potatoes and roasted pumpkin- the entire meal was really good and at 21 euro very reasonably priced.

The space itself was lovely - lots of brick with copper and great art on the walls and the staff were so friendly and accommodating.Read more

Tamara hatte mit ihren Mädels in Berlin gewonnen. In dem Jahr war die Europa und Weltmeisterschaft zusammen in Lille. Sie wurden 2. hinter Brasilien - also Europameister.Read more

Was macht man in Frankreich zuerst? Na klar! Ein pain de chocolate essen. Wieso bekommen die Bäckereien in Deutschland es nicht so hin?
Allerdings schafft dieser einzigartige Geschmack es, dass man mit nur einem Biss weiß, dass man in Frankreich ist.
Naja und die Tatsache, dass auf einmal niemand englisch spricht. „Je sais pas en anglais.“ war mit Abstand der mir meistgesagte Satz. Na dann muss ich wohl meine französisch Kenntnisse raus kramen. Das hat zum Glück noch gut geklappt!

Lille ist eine sehr schöne kleine Stadt. Viele verzweigte Straßen und Gassen. Man hat sofort ein Frankreich-Flair.

Ganz besonders hat mir die alte Börse von Lille gefallen. Ein kleiner Hinterhof, in dem Bücher, Bilder, Schallplatten und sehr alte Zeitungen verkauft wurden. Lange habe ich gestöbert, um eine Zeitung zu finden, die an meinem Geburtstag herausgegeben wurde. Leider bin ich nicht fündig geworden. Ferhat fand insbesondere die Schachspieler spannend. Während ich also stöberte, schaute er dem Schachspiel zu. Eine absolute Empfehlung!Read more

Braderie de Lille

We caught the metro into Braderie de Lille this morning. We didn't realise we had to change lines along the way, but luckily a young French guy started talking to us on the train and his cousin just so happens to live in Brisbane, so he helped us change lines and set us in the right direction before he got off to go to work.

Apparently this antiquities and flea market dates back to the 12th century. It was cancelled last year due to terrorism fears as there are around 2 million visitors to the event each year and their safety could not be guaranteed. Not sure what made it possible to guarantee the safety of visitors this year, but there were a lot of police with rather large machine guns at the ready standing around! There are so many people arriving by train and so much rubbish on the streets, I can't really see how they could have a hope of foiling the plans of a would-be terrorist.

It seemed busy to us, but one stall holder who started talking to us said business was so-so as it was not as busy as recent years. We had lunch in a little cafe off one of the main streets. We were jammed into a bench seat and the man next to us started talking to us. He was born and still lived in Lille, but had travelled a lot. We had a great conversation with our almost non-existent French and his better English. He was an avid cyclist and obviously followed the rugby as he was asking about the All Blacks (we set him right that he needed to go for the Wallabies!) and Phil Anderson (first Australian to win a stage and wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France - I had to look that up!).

Back at the farm, our AirBnB host Pascal asked if the kids wanted to go for a swim in her pool. 29 degrees, so off they went. We started talking to her and her husband (also named Pascal) about their hobby farm and all the rabbits we saw on the lawn the night before, which led to picking plums from their tree, checking out their quince, pear and walnut trees and collecting eggs from the chickens. The kids had fresh-from-the-chicken boiled eggs and plums for dinner. Can't get much more direct to the plate than that! We've been having last season's walnuts in our salad at night as there is a bowl in the apartment with a nutcracker. This AirBnb has been brilliant!Read more

Ja maar wel met een omweg. Vandaag dus Lille, morgen Brugge en donderdag via Piet Hein Eek in Eindhoven wat altijd een leuke plek is om te bezoeken. Wel beetje afhankelijk van het weer, want morgen lijkt een natte dag te worden.
