Uiteraard, zoals dat gaat op campings, werden we vandaag voor dag en dauw onze tent uit gebrand, wat er in combinatie met het feestje van gisteravond voor zorgde dat we met kleine oogjes aan het ontbijt zaten. We kregen flink de tijd om de slaap uit onze ogen te wrijven, want het ontbijt liet best een tijdje op zich wachten. Gelukkig gaf dat ons mooi de gelegenheid wat bij te kletsen met een aantal Duitsers, die de route van de rally geheel op de motor afleggen, waar we, gezien de grote afstanden, op z'n minst dan enige bewondering voor moeten hebben.

Het routeboek gaf ons een vrij duidelijk doel mee vandaag: vrij geparafraseerd stond er dat we een keiharde chillsessie moesten gooien in Tbilisi. Dus, na het inpakken van al onze kampeerspullen navigeerden we tussen de gaten in de weg, loslopende koeien, bumperloze auto's en extreem chaotische verkeerssituaties door in de richting van ons appartementje in het oude centrum van Tbilisi. Vraag ons gerust om het concept van een afslag naar links via een Georgische U-bochtconstructie eens uit te tekenen, wanneer we weer terug in Nederland zijn.

Na een klein halfuurtje te zijn bijgekomen in het appartementje was het tijd om de stad wat te gaan verkennen. Het eerste dat direct opviel was dat de stad verrassend Europees aanvoelt: smalle straatjes kronkelen tussen felgekleurde huisjes door, hoewel gezegd moet worden dat deze niet allemaal in even goede staat zijn. Tegelijkertijd zijn de gevels, stoepranden en muurtjes gevuld met graffiti die uitsluitend pro-Europees, pro-Oekraïens en anti-Russisch is, waarmee Tbilisi ook wel de Berlijn van de Kaukasus wordt genoemd. Het enige in het oog springende dat direct weggeeft dat we toch vrij ver van het Europese vasteland verwijderd zijn, zijn de gekke vermicellitekens van het Georgische schrift die ons tevergeefs probeerden bij de vele winkeltjes en restaurantjes naar binnen te lokken.

Na een korte wandeling door het oude centrum, langs de oever van de Mtvari en over de peace bridge, namen we het beroemde kabelbaantje dat ons naar een fort toe bracht dat hoog op de berg boven de stad uittorent. Daarna bezochten Ian en ik de botanische tuin, waar ondanks dat we op een steenworp afstand van het bruisende stadscentrum waren, de grote waterval ons het gevoel gaf dat we ons diep in een natuurgebied bevonden.

's Avonds gingen we naar een typisch Georgisch restaurant om ons te verzadigen met traditionele lokale gerechten, en niet te vergeten de oranje wijn waar Georgië bekend om staat. Tot slot hebben Ian en ik nog een avondwandeling gemaakt naar de kathedraal van Tbilisi, het centrum van de Georgisch Orthodoxe kerk. Vanaf daar heeft men uitzicht over de stad en de groene berghellingen van de omliggende kloof. Onderweg kwamen we een aantal straatmuzikanten tegen, en het viel op dat ze allemaal uitsluitend westerse muziek speelden, een schril contrast met de gebedsoproepen uit de Turkse minaretten waar we de afgelopen dagen zo aan gewend zijn geraakt.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat Tbilisi een betoverende indruk heeft achtergelaten, en dat we iedereen kunnen aanraden het een keertje te bekijken! Maar morgen hebben we weer een verre rit voor de boeg, dus tijd om dit keer wel een goede nachtrust te pakken.

Day 13: Chill day in Tbilisi

Of course, as it happens on camp sites, the sun burned us out of our tents way too early this morning, what in combination with the party last night ensured that we showed up at breakfast quite sleepy. We were given quite some time to rub the sleep out of our eyes as the breakfast was quite slow. Furtunately that allowed us to catch up with some Germans that are doing the rally completely on motorcycles, whom, given the large distances, we must admire at least a little bit.

The road book gave us a straighforward task today: freely paraphrased it told us to have a proper chill session in Tbilisi. So, after packing all our camping gear, we navigated through holes in the road, stray cows, bumperless cars and extremely chaotic traffic situations, towards our appartment in the old city center of Tbilisi. Feel free to ask us to draw the left turn via a Georgian U-turn construction once we made it back to the Netherlands.

After recovering for half an hour in the appartment, it was time to explore the city. The first thing that stood out immediately was that the city feels surprisingly European: small streets wind through an area of colorful houses, even though not all of them are in great condition. At the same time façades, curbs and walls are filled with graffiti that are exclusively pro-European, pro-Ukrainian and anti-Russian, which gives Tbilisi the nickname the Berlin of the Caucasus. The only notable thing that immediately gives away that we are far away from mainland Europe are the vermicelli letters of the Georgian script that tried in vain to persuade us to enter the many shops and restaurants in town.

After a small walk through the old center, along the banks of the river Mtvari, and across the Peace Bridge, we took the famous fernicular that took us to a fortress high above the city. Afterwards, Ian and me visited the botanical garden, where, even though we were a stone's throw away from the bustling city center, the big cascade made us feel like we were in the middle of a big nature reserve.

In the evening we went to a typical Georgian restaurant to have some traditional local dishes, and not to forget the orange wine that Georgia is known for. To cap off the day, Ian and me made an evening walk to the cathedral of Tbilisi, the center of the Georgian orthodox church. From there, one has a view over the city, as well as the green mountain sides of the surrounding gorge. Along the way, we passed some street musicians, all of whom played exclusively western music, a stark contrast with the calls for prayers from the Turk minarets we had grown accustomed to over the past few days.

It can be concluded that Tbilisi left a magical impression on us, and we can recommend everyone to go and pay it a visit! But tomorrow we have a long ride ahead, so this time we hope to catch some well-deserved night's rest.
