      Heute haben wir wieder eine Tour gebucht und erkunden den Nordenosten von Georgien. Wir fahren auf dem Georgischer Militär Highway nach Ananuri, Gudauri, zum Freundschaftsdenkmal nach Kazbegi,Stepanzminda und schaue uns Gergeti Sameba an.

      Den Vormittag verbringen wir damit nochmal alles durchzuschauen und nochmal was an Gepäck auszusortieren.Das wir nach Hause schicken. Wir möchten mit deutlich weniger Gepäck weiterradeln. Danach machen wir noch eine Sightseeing Runde über den Flohmarkt, Fabrika Tbilisi und Sameba-Kathedrale.Read more

      📌 Arriving in a new country is always a little difficult, knowing how to get to the accommodation, having no internet, having no local currency. As we got off in Tbilisi at 2.30am, the esim was average so we had to get a local Sim and fend off the taxi drivers. It was a smooth ride to the accommodation as Georgia actually has a reliable rideshare app unlike Turkey.

      📌 We were staying in a trendy neighbourhood with some cool coffee shops, bars and a former Soviet industrial building converted to a hostel and courtyard of bars/restaurants. The city was also full of trendy restaurants, wine bars and shops. Some say Tbilisi is the Berlin of eastern Europe.

      📌 We started our intro to Georgia with a free walking tour, we were shown old Soviet buildings, old Tbilisi town which was not destroyed by the Soviets and learnt a great deal of history. It was evident that Georgians do not like Russia and they are very angry that Russia still occupies 20% of Georgian territory. It was also fascinating how Georgia has only been independent since 1991 and they had a revolution in 2003.

      📌 The food in Tbilisi was incredible, some of the well known Georgian food we have tried so far includes; Khinkali (dumplings), Khachapuri (cheese filled bread), Chkmeruli (garlic sauce chicken) plus many others. Of course, good food needs to be consumed with good wine, and Georgia has been found to have been making wine since 4000 BC using clay pots in the ground, potentially the first wine makers in the world. It tastes delicious and is super cheap, approx 3-4$ a glass.

      📌 A couple of other highlights included the cable car over the city, a converted market to a food hall of different bars and restaurants, an outdoor wine courtyard of bars and restaurants, and the old architecture and the monument celebrating Georgia over time. Another nice surprise was the national museum which showed the importance of this area in human evolution. The first humans potentially migrated to Europe from Africa through this area and thus many fossils have been evident here.      Read more

Due to the difficult political situation in Armenia generated by the latest short "war" between Azerbaijan and the independent Republic of Nagorni Kaeabach, that has massive impact on the stability in Armenia, we have decided to skip the country and return to Turkey directly from Georgia.Read more

      Das Kloster von David Garescha ist das letzte georgisch-orthodoxes 
      Kloster im Osten Georgiens welches wir anschauen. Es liegt am Berg Udabno in der Region Kachetien, unmittelbar an der Grenze zu Aserbaidschan. Das älteste Kloster Georgiens steht auf der Vorschlagsliste zum UNESCO-Welterbe und ist wunderschön. Hier beginnen auch die Rainbow Mountains. Beim Mittagessen waren wir bei einer georgischen Familie zu Gast. Sehr lecker. Das georgische Essen werde ich vermissen.Read more

      Kisten packen

      Wir gehen zur Post und hoffen das es dort Kantons zu kaufen gibt aber leider ist die georgische Post nicht so gut sortiert. Wir müssen durch die halbe Stadt fahren um uns ein Karton zu kaufen. Gottseidank🙏🏼gibt es Google Maps. Zurück bei der Post mit den neuen Karton klappt dann alles reibungslos.
      12 kg schicken wir zurück nach Deutschland. Was echt eine Menge ist. Wieder steigen wir in den Bus und fahren in die andere Richtung, den den Rest vom Mittag verbringen wir im Bikeshop mit Fahrrad in Kisten packen.      Read more

      Viel erledigt

      Heute stehen Entscheidungen an. Viele Grenzen sind und bleiben für uns leider geschlossen. Dewegen müssen wir umplanen. Eigentlisch wollten wir weiterradeln nach Azerbaijan/Baku aber diese Grenze ist für Touristen auf dem Landweg geschlossen. Also erste Planänderung wir fliegen mit den Rädern von Tiblisi und nicht von Baku nach Uzbekistan. Fahrräder haben wir zum überholen in ein Bikeshop gebracht und dort werden sie gleich auch verpackt für den Flug. Eingekauft Wäsche gewaschen und essen bestellt. Der E Visa Antrag hat am meisten Zeit gekostet und hat nicht klappt weil die keine VISA Karte akzeptieren sonder nur Master Karte. Mal schauen wie wir das Regeln.Read more

      Die Stimmung ist unterschiedlich.

      An einer viel befahrenen Straße gibt es dann 🍪 und 2 ☕ .

      Day 264

      Tbilissi - Noël en famille

      Meilleur cadeau de Noël que nous pouvions espérer : avoir de la famille en visite ! Débarquent alors Isabelle et Séb du côté de Vincent, mes parents de mon côté, c'est la fête à Tbilissi :)
      Les valises sont chargées de victuailles, d'un nouveau four solaire grand format et même de kits avalanche pour nos futures sorties neige.

      L'ambiance de Noël se fait immédiatement ressentir. On prend le temps de peaufiner la déco du airbnb : deux planches de bois entourées de guirlandes lumineuses feront un très beau sapin 🎄
      Et pour le repas ? Au bout de la rue, un monsieur vend des poulets déplumés, hop, deux dans le sac et nous voilà sur youtube pour apprendre à les dépecer (avec l'accent québécois svp!), un grand moment 😵‍💫😆
      On passe donc une très belle soirée : jeux, champagne et délicieux repas, le tout accompagné de musiques de Noël !
      Les jours suivants, on se balade dans la ville à pied car le temps est au beau fixe. Il y a tant de choses à voir : la vieille ville, ses façades et son architecture, de belles églises orthodoxes, la vue panoramique de la colline, le jardin botanique, les artistes pres du pont et le marché de Noël avec toutes ses illuminations.
      On en profite bien sûr pour goûter les spécialités locales de quelques restos, miam encore des khinkalis !

      Après le départ d'Isabelle et Séb, on clôt notre visite par les bains de souffre (et son massage moussant) et les quelques marchés d'artisanat, pourtant bien difficile à trouver... malgré le super guide de maman !

      Quatre jours à Tbilissi avant de retourner à la montagne, accompagnés des parents, chouette de leur faire découvrir notre nouvelle maison et nos nouveaux copains ! On saute dans un taxi partagé, en route vers Gudauri.
      Après 2h de route et 50 voitures et camions doublés dans les virages en frôlant l'accident, nous arrivons à bon port, ils sont fous ces géorgiens !!
      Petite partie de plaisir pour faire avancer les grosses valises à roulettes dans la neige 😆
      Rencontre avec Valentin, Shako et sa maman, Giga, rien n'a changé à part la bonne news du jour : nous avons une nouvelle machine à laver !!! Demain, direction Stephensminda      Read more

      Food of Georgia

      The food of Georgia was outstanding and perhaps the most flavorful of all countries on our trip. Maybe the remnants of the silk road spice trade are kicking in but the country certainly did not disappoint. They had a variety of different types of foods from salads to soups to dumplings and meat dishes. Mushrooms are very prevalent here as is breads and cheeses.

      And of course don't forget the dumplings or Khinkali which are absolutely NOT to be eaten with a knife and fork. You flip them on their tails take a small bite and drain the soup out of the doling then eat it like a lollipop. Your not supposed to eat the knubs that you hold onto you simply discard them on the plate. These are usually filled with Veal or pork or mushrooms or potatoe or cheese. They are delicious.

      Popular drinks in Georgia are Chacha or a liquor made from distilled grapes. And of course let's not forget the famous Georgia wine. Dave and I went to a tasting and enjoyed 3 wines from each of Georgians main wine producing areas. The amber or orange wine was delicious as was our red wines. They are traditionally made in a Georgian clay pot where they throw the entire grapes vine and all into the pot and then burry it in the ground for fermentation. This causes the sugar to be eaten up completely yielding mostly dry and some semi dry wines with strong earthy notes. Red wine or black wine as they call it is heavy to medium bodied with tannins very dry or semi sweet. White and amber wine is medium bodied and dry to semi sweet as well. We have not had a bad wine yet here.

      While we are a lot of red meat, there were also se amazing vegan dishes. Many restaurants had a Georgian salad. It has not lettuce, but fresh tomato, cucumber, and onion and is topped with ground walnuts. One of the most interesting dishes we had was Mkhali. It's ground walnut and either beet or spinach, served cold in a Patty shape. Also, on one of our last days we ordered Beets in Tkemali, a local plum sauce as an app and it stole the shoe. Topped with cilantro, it was a very unique way to eat beets.

      For culinary lovers this country cannot be missed. It yielded some of the most unique flavor profiles we have had.      Read more
