    Bacharach

    July 16, 2016 in Germany

A 'chocolate box' town, Bacharach runs along the Rhein and its narrow cobbled streets, numerous wells and colourful timber framed buildings really did take our breath away. The hillsides rise sharply at the back of the town, but neat rows of vines cling to every patch of suitable land, occasionally interrupted by a protruding 'schloss'. These are best described as somewhere between a manor house and a castle, a hillside feature that appears quite common in this region.Read more

    Zwischenstopp in Deutschland

    January 14, 2017 in Germany

Walked around the town of Bacharach this morning after breakfast, including a small vineyard. Thomas gave us a history of his family and the town. A lot of interesting info about their perspective on WWI and WW2. The Germans are very somber about their history, and they each take responsibility for making sure history doesn't repeat itself.

    Bacharach

    August 19, 2017 in Germany

After leaving beautiful Goslar at 9.45am we arrived here at 3.15pm, a good drive but a fair bit longer than the GPS prediction of 3.5 hours. Bacharach is a small town of about 2,000 and is on the 'romantic' Rhine . Our first stop after checking in at our hotel (Hotel am Markt), was to try a local reisling at Posthof Bacharach, built in 1726 it has a delightful courtyard overlooked by some old church ruins. After a short rest, we wandered along the shores of the river to the local campground - envying the many motorhomes parked there - and walked more of the town, before returning to Posthof Bacharach for a light meal (where they. somewhat remarkably, charge 1.80 EUR for a glass off tap water!!! It's enough to make you want to drink m ore of the local Riesling!). We ate a Flammkuchen for the first time (an extra thin pizza-like dish); not bad, not amazing either...we then asked the owner about e charge for tap water, and got a lecture for 10 minutes on the the time and motion costs of oproviding water in a glass. Mmmm....Read more

    Bacharach

    August 20, 2017 in Germany

After breakfast, we tried to work out whether we could book a 'special' tour to an old customs station on the Rhine, but the manager at our hotel seemed to have no knowledge of it. Not to be discouraged, we went down to the various piers in front of the village, asking about the tour. Everyone professed ignorance but offered alternatives in their cruises...Ofcourse! Still it sounded like a good alternative, so we cruised fir about 49 minutes downstream to St Goar, and clambered up the hillside to see the soectacukar ruins of Burg Rheinfels. St Goat is very close to the turn in the river with the famous Lorelei rocks. We returned mid afternoon, again by cruise...but it took about twice as long, battling against the string current. Still full of energy, we clambered up the hill near our village, along a 'donkey' track...to see Burg Stahleck, now a youth hostel...with fantastic view of the river below. We dinnered at Stivers restaurant, primarily because of the vegetarian and seafood options available. It was a nice place, overloooking the Rhine....and adjacent to the railway track! We had a good meal, but poor service...with Annette being given a meal she had not ordered. After the error being raised, we were ignored, only belatedly to have the error blamed on the chef! What a strange town...as beautiful as it undoubtedly is...Read more

    Pause in Bacharach

    May 7, 2016 in Germany
