    Bamburg

    June 22, 2016 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Bamburg was governed by Bishops and Imperialism for almost a thousand years, and often referred to as the Rome of Franconia.

Bamberg stands on seven hills surrounded by beautiful countryside. Dominated by its imperial cathedral, the town is a unique and superbly maintained masterpiece of urban design, uniting medieval and baroque architecture.

Bamberg's well-preserved old town comprises three historical districts – the episcopal town, the island town and the market gardener's town. All three are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and provide a fascinating example of how central European towns were built up around the basic layouts established in the early Middle Ages.

Bamberg was given special status in 1007, when Heinrich II was building the town into a centre of episcopal and sovereign power, making it the centre of the newly founded diocese and turning it into a second Rome. Five churches in the form of a Latin cross mark the layout of the town. The historical townscape features numerous monuments from the 11th to the 18th century and some 1,200 architectural monuments. With its four towers, the imperial cathedral of St. Peter and St. George is the most prominent building.

Other highlights include the the rose garden with a view of the old town, the tanners' cottages by the old canal, the mill district and the fisherman's village known as Little Venice.

    Walking around Bamburg

    June 22, 2016 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The day started with a walking tour of Bamburg. Bamburg is larger than the towns we have visited over the last few days.

It had a number of interesting buildings including a castle which is now a Retirement Village. What an interesting concept Michael and Melissa. You could put us in this home and we would be living in Bamburg Castle or Camperdown Castle. Hmmm what a decision.Read more

    Franconian Farm

    June 22, 2016 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We then went to a small farming village and took a tractor ride through the woods and vineyard and finished the tour with wine tasting.

The days are so interesting but they are long, my head is getting close to exploding with all the facts and fiction each tour guide gives at every place we visit.Read more

    Bamberg geniessen

    July 27, 2020 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Read more

LG Bernd [Bernd]

    Destination Bamberg

    October 4, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We'd got used to the pattern of sightseeing in the morning and then having free time in the afternoon. This time we had a leisurely morning on board while we continued on to our destination of Bamberg.

We were warned that, unlike all the other places that we had visited, Bamberg's port area is totally unattractive. As we saw when we arrived just after lunch, that was certainly the case. Fortunately we had buses to pick us up and take us to the centre of town.

Bamberg is certainly a very attractive town and we began by walking alongside the river from where we could admire all the old houses along the water's edge on the opposite bank. With good reason the area is known as Little Venice. We then walked quickly through the old town and up the hill to the cathedral. It and the surrounding buildings are quite spectacular, though our guide unfortunately was in a bit of a rush which limited the opportunity for photographs. Opportunities were further limited by the large amount of road and foot traffic in the area and by the fact that many of the buildings were undergoing repairs and restoration work. Nevertheless, what we did see was quite impressive.

Our guide then took us back down the hill to the old town, leaving us to our own devices for a couple of hours. That was fine, except for the fact that round about then it started to rain. This was unfortunate because up until then the weather had at least been dry, though overcast and cold.

Bamberg contains many shops and restaurants, and would have provided many photo opportunities also if the weather had been kinder. We were tempted to try the smoked beer, a local specialty, but as we had been eating and drinking so much on board the ship we decided to give it a miss. At the appointed time we were happy enough to get back on the bus and return to the comfort of our ship. We were certainly pleased to have visited Bamberg, though a little disappointed that the weather had prevented us from getting a lot more out of the visit.

Thanks Marijke. Pleased you're enjoying it. I'm having fun writing it, and it's a good way of keeping friends and family up to date with what we are doing. After we get home I'll do some editing of the photos. We'll then get it printed as a book for us to keep as a memory and souvenir of the holiday.

Another place we enjoyed - just for a day - and stumbled across a choir practicing in the cathedral - free listening for an hour - not sure if it was "the" Bamberg Choir but great. Became intrigued with the smoked beer and pork fat with salt !! Bruce C

    Day 543: Bamberg

    August 11, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Headed north to the town of Bamberg, another World Heritage site. This one is similar to Regensburg, with lots of old half-timbered houses and interesting buildings to see. The highlight was definitely the old town hall, sitting on a tiny island in between two arms of a river. It's got a strong Czech and Polish feel here as the city traded in that direction for much of its history, so the culture got imported back if that makes sense.

Wandered around checking out various sights including the cathedral, the old fortress, and a spot known as Little Venice which is where all their fishermen had their houses. Nice little town!

Mid afternoon we headed off to our apartment, a nice suite in a small guesthouse about 20 minutes out of town. Unfortunately since it was a small town we couldn't get 3G, and being down the end of the hotel meant that we couldn't get the wifi signal either. So we resorted to sitting around in the dining room! At least it had nice large windows and was on the edge of a hill, so we had a good view while we did laptop stuff.
