    Bayreuth

    May 7, 2017 in Germany

Today I found out that my (recently resprayed) waterproof jacket is about as much use as a chocolate tea pot...but also if you keep moving in the rain it doesn't matter so much about getting wet if you have something dry to put on afterwards.

Having a bike laden with panniers seems to be an invitation for people to ask where you are going :D I love seeing their faces when we tell them 😀. Admittedly only two days in but now we've made the first wild camp, made it through the vogtland hills and the Fichtelgebirge its feeling more like we are getting used to the bikes and being on the go. Here's hoping for better weather tomorrow!!

(2 days in- still not bought any food! - a sign we brought too much with us 🙊)

Bayreuth seems to be a quaint small city with some nice architecture, parks and well-conceived cycle routes through the city.

Peter's beer consumption: 1 small one from the petrol station.

    Chocolate consumption:
3/4 of a rum and raisen ritter sport.
    1/2 an almond schogetten bar.

  • Day544

And now for our second day trip out of Bamberg, to the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth. This was a lucky one for us, since we'd planned to visit last year (and cancelled when Schnitzel got sick), but it was under renovation at the time anyway and so we wouldn't have seen anything. Lucky for us it had since re-opened.

So we loaded up the car and drove an hour to the east, arriving in Bayreuth. The opera house is from the 1750s, and was built by the ruling Margrave and his wife. It was their court theatre/opera house, but unusually it wasn't located within their palace compound. Sort of a stepping stone towards the public opera houses and theatres that we have today.

Again no dogs inside, naturally, so we filmed a bit and then Shandos did her tour first. I waited outside and then went in for my turn. The tour was almost entirely in German so not much use, but it was great to see everything. Very ornately decorated, and interesting to see that it was almost entirely wood and plaster, no stone or other materials! You could hardly tell unless you looked closely.

Finishing the tour I went and had a bratwurst for lunch before rejoining Shandos outside. Back in the car, where we drove northwards to Naumburg - our stop for tomorrow!

    Bayreuth

    October 5, 2017 in Germany

We left Kelheim yesterday morning, but not before we took a short boat ride to the Weltenberg Kloster about 6 kms upstream. We were joined by busloads of tourists from the Avalon company; lots of Americans. We then headed to Bayreuth where Mark's half sister lives. However, we had to make a stop at HMB-Guzzi on the way. 🤔
We spent an interesting evening with Irene and Alfred; they don't speak English and we don't speak German! They took us to a lovely restaurant for dinner. Mark forgot his camera so will add photos of Irene and Alfred later.Read more

    Bayreuth

    October 6, 2017 in Germany

This morning we had breakfast with Alfred and Irene before heading back to Stuttgart airport. The weather was extremely wet and windy; we were glad to be heading home. We were delayed getting away from Stuttgart and then had to fly above Heathrow for an extra 20 minutes or so. Thankfully, we were staying at an airport hotel so didn't have to travel far. Heading to Bristol tomorrow to catch up with Nicholas. (Alfred and Irene are the couple on the left in the second photo). We stayed in a lovely place called Villa Friedrich.Read more

    Bayreuth

    February 17, 2017 in Germany

Read more
