      So ein Leben

      October 8, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      In kleinen Schritten

      October 9, 2022 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Hundekontakte verlaufen immer entspannter.

      August 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

In Park4night steht was von 20 Parkplätzen.

More Tuffi, Engels and on to a Boat

      May 23, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

A late train and indeed checkout give us time to take a last ride on the Schwebebahn to the Alter Markt so we could hunt down the Bronze Tuffi…..although we only shoot animals with camera phones 🤪

We also sought out the slightly covered up elephant painting near the spot where poor Tuffi took a dive…the artwork was rather childlike, if I’m honest 🤷‍♂️

Nearby, we found the lovely house Friedrich Engels grew up in. Co-author of The Communist Manifesto with Karl Marx, it feels like he led the life of quite the champagne Socialist, with a personal motto of “take it easy" 🤣
Curiously, we discovered that the amazing Giles Brandreth was also born in the City….can’t believe there are no jumper monuments in his name 🤣

We then had our only real train confusion of the entire journey….two trains claimed to leave the station for Mönchengladbach at exactly the same time: one on platform 1, the other on 5. My logic was to make a last minute change and get the one with the least stops: we certainly left the station first 🤷‍♂️
An easy change, and a cheeky free film “Whiplash” for the longer leg to Amsterdam. Great film well acted, provided you suspend belief about how likely the story line would be 🎬

The next journey was across the wide canal from the Centraal station to NDSM on one of the many free ferries that ply the waters here.
We originally looked to stay at the BOTEL, ideally in one of the room funnels, but they were all booked up, so we found a houseboat nearby instead.
Turned out to be very nice, with a private balcony to have a cuppa or a beer 🍻

After a rest and some planning, we had a stroll out to check the local area, and found a small dinner and beers at Cannibale Royale 👍

      Berlin to Wuppertal

      November 18, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

      Meeting my German family

Left Berlin in the morning and met the family I will be staying with in Wuppertal (courtesy of Luise who we met while she was also backpacking in her uni break). We went to dinner at a restaurant that used to be the building that enclosed the towns indoor public pool. Traditional German dinner, very delicious! We were then shown some of the family's favourite bars on a "pub crawl".

Fun fact of the day: Wuppertal used to be 2 different cities, which were combined into one metropolitan area under a new name in the early 1900s.

      A personal pilgrimage

      October 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Got up nice and early, went for walk around the countryside and back for a full English at the van, yum.
Off on our travels again, first point as we’re passing through anyway was Hamelin, as in the pied piper of - the town where the rats (and subsequent children) disappeared. Apparently based on fact? Must read Grimm fairy tales… Very pretty city but we didn’t stop. Onwards to the first stop, my birth town. Found the building that used to be BMH (British medical hospital) Rinteln, closed in 1997 then converted to a care home for elderly and special needs schooling. We walked around the back path still with old fencing and barbed wire, quite military looking then drove to the entrance. Nicely modernised but still with elements of military, looks a little like a prison! Interesting opportunity to see where it all began nearly 50 years earlier.
Then on towards Cologne but, again, stopping along the way to Iserlohn, my maternal grandmother‘s home town. Again, a lovely looking old town but we headed to the cemetery as Grandma had mentioned that the family were buried there. Sadly, the only name I have is her maiden name, Schwarz. She keeps everything close to her chest! We had a wander. A massive, beautifully maintained grounds. We didn’t find any Schwartz however not surprising as in Germany, you only rent the burial spot usually up to around 30-50 years. After that point if you don’t want to continue paying, the grave is cleared and reused for the next burial! A German friend of ours went and reclaimed his father‘s headstone. It’s now in his garden! Apparently you’re not allowed to scatter ashes either, they have to be buried in a cemetery too?
We paid our respects anyway and drove to our stopover by the river Lenne in a town called Altena. Another lovely looking town with a castle on the hill. More walking, dinner then whilst we were gaming, we thought it was our music first but heard a loud siren, opened the door and there was definitely a siren from out side, very loud. V scary. The same as an air raid siren. It sounded for 3 rounds then stopped. Few minutes later we heard lots of vehicle sirens go past. Apparently a few towns in Germany still have a warning system which was tested recently (similar to our mobile phone alert we had but theirs was sirens too). The alert we heard was for the fire brigade calling to warn them of an incident so not an alert for the public. There are different alerts that we should listen out for, though.

      Urban exploring day

      August 14, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Well this was definitely cool. After finally meeting up with Nina and her friends ( an hour late, thanks DB) we spent the day trying to find some buildings to explore. Though we were mostly unsuccessful it was a full, fun, and tiring day. I found something squishy in the last picture 😂Read more

      Hans im Glück

      September 5, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      Burger brothers and towers

      March 10, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

It was quite fun, we visited another museum about coal and miners, and we also went up, on a high tower, where we could see the city from above. Even though it was windy and rainy the view was amazing. We really enjoyed that moment.
On this day we also played bowling with the German students and ate hamburgers in a restaurant called Burger brothers. I can still remember the taste of that hamburger.

      Walking around

      March 6, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

On the first day, we woke up very excited because we were beginning a new chapter of our life. After breakfast we went to school accompanied by 2 German teachers. We took the train which wasn't very difficult but I didn't like the part where we walked in the rain for a long distance to reach the train station.
After the school tour, we decided that it was finally time to visit Bochum. We just walked around and tried to find some nice little shops and bars. The teacher Lavagnini also decided to offer us a snack according to our preferences.
Eventually we decided to call it a day and we just went back to the hotel to have dinner and just relax.
