Hoe luxe is je leven als je je zomerpaleis Zonder Zorgen kan noemen? Frederik de Grote kon dat blijkbaar... Leuk om het wereldberoemde Sanssouci te bekijken. De fietsroute was ingewikkeld, geregeld liep het fietspad uit op een mul zandpad.Read more

Cold War Berlin

This is what most of us grew up with when we heard about Berlin. Most of what's here was familiar in name only. Seeing all this brought so much back.
The 1st picture is of a section of the Berlin wall that has been preserved. Most of us have heard of Checkpoint Charlie between the American (West Berlin) and Soviet (Easy Berlin) sectors. That's the 2nd picture.
The 3rd picture is the bridge of spies where cold war spies who had been captured were exchanged. The most famous from the US perspective was Gary Powers, the U2 pilot who had been shot down. The 4th picture shows the marker on the bridge deck denoting the border between West Berlin and East Germany. This is the point where the exchanges were made.
The last picture is one of the aircraft used in the Berlin airlift that supplied West Berlin when East Germany (and the Soviet Union, of course) tried to cut off and starve West Berlin by blocking the roads in an attempt to get the allies to abandon West Berlin to the SovietsRead more

Potsdam - Schloss Cecilienhof

Als Erstes wollten wir in Potsdam das Schloss Cecilienhof 🏰 besichtigen. Es wurde erst 1913 bis 1917 im englischen Stil erbaut und ist das letzte Schloss dass die Hohenzollern erbaut haben. Hier wohnten sie dann auch bis 1945. Das Schloss war aber noch ein ganz anderer Schauplatz der Geschichte. Hier fand vom 17. Juli bis 2. August 1945 die Potsdamer Konferenz statt. Die drei Siegermächte des zweiten Weltkriegs USA 🇺🇸 mit Truman, Russland 🇷🇺 mit Stalin und Grossbritannien 🇬🇧 mit Churchill besprachen hier wie es nach den Kriegshandlungen in Europa weiter gehen soll. Diese Konferenz gilt auch als Endpunkt des 2. Weltkriegs. Mit dem Potsdamer Abkommen wurde Deutschland 🇩🇪 entmilitarisiert und politisch und geografisch neu eingeordnet. Leider konnten wir das Schloss nur aussen besichtigen, denn am Montag ist es geschlossen. Heute ist es sogar ein Hotel.Read more

Potsdam Schloss Cecilienhof

We decided on a guided tour atop a double decker bus to sightsee around Potsdam. Potsdam is located on an island and has 130,000 inhabitants and is the capital of Brandenburg.
The oldest building in Potsdam was originally a greenhouse and then turned into stables as they were seen as being more important especially by Frederick the Great who was a great conquerer and believed in powerful armies. He lead Prussia to become one of the most powerful countries in the world at the time.
Potsdam has always been a city of soldiers and has a replica Brandenburg Gate interestingly Potsdam is renown for many fantasies with its architecture.
Potsdam like so many cities of the day has a city wall for defense and safety.
We first visited a palace where the famous Potsdam conference was held at the end of WW2 between Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt to decide on important territorial issues at the end of the war.Read more

Schloss Sanssouci

How many ways are there to say palace - more than you might think. We had one of those perfect days that come along when you are travelling and the stars align. Having settled into Berlin on our first day with a tour jam packed with history and sights, we decided to head off to Potsdam today to visit Frederic the Great's summer palace, Sanssouci. No history lessons here, but it seems like Frederic the Great was really .... Great. According to our guide from the first days, he was one of the few historical figures to actually be called 'Great' while he was still around to appreciate it. He didn't mind a good fight and put his dad's vast army to good use, but he also valued art, science and culture - and having a good time. He set up a university and invited the best scholars from around Europe to come and study. And if that wasn't enough he seems to have been a pretty good politician as well.
One thing for sure, his summer palace is Devine. Not a huge monstrosity - elaborate, but not ridiculous and the whole thing blending in so well in the huge garden around it. The vineyard in the front yard is gone but most if it is lovingly restored and tended. It was easy to get to, easy to get around and the weather was just perfect - if a bit chilly. It seems others approved of his choice because there are at least 6 palaces scattered around the place and he didn't build them all. He was much influenced by Roman and Greek architecture and even had some ruins built which were visible in the distance from the palace.

All in all a fabulous day in Potsdam.Read more

In the distance you can see some of the ruins that Frederic had built - a bit like pre-stressed jeans I suppose.

Orangerieschloss

Nach Sanssouci steht das Orangerieschloss. Aktuell waren die ganzen Statuen und Pflanzen noch eingeräumt und noch kein Wasser im Brunnen. Dennoch sind es mächtige Bauwerke. Hier war noch Zeitnah eine Führung frei, die haben wir mitgenommen. Die verbleibende Zeit haben wir uns das nächste Bauwerk angeschaut oder besser gesagt sind angekommen und mussten direkt wieder zurück.

In der Orangerie selbst haben wir XXL Pantoffeln bekommen, da der Boden nicht restauriert ist. Der Gute starb nämlich vor Fertigstellung und somit ist die Orangerie ungenutzt geblieben. Wahnsinn was damals so gebaut wurde. Da fühlt man sich beim durchgehen selbst gleich reich :DRead more

We’ve w such an amazing place to stay the night! With the forest in the back, like a little cute bay but better😍
After we rested we cooked diner and enjoyed an amazing sunset! Then we made a campfire, roasted some marshmallows and just talked and laughed. When we hit our bed the sky was clear and we saw 1000s of stars⭐️✨Read more

water everywhere

We got woken up by some lonely raindrops which dropped on our tents. The sky was grey and very cloudy.
We cooked porridge and loaded our backpacks once again and hit the river again. It was windy and suddenly the clouds let all the rain go! 🌧 Luckily we’ve found shelter under a bridge but we had go further and so we paddeled in the rain back to the renting station.
Everything and everyone was wet to the skin.. Every piece in the backpack was soaking wet..💧
So change of plans.. Instead of camping we booked a youth hostel. We put all of out clother around the room and tried to dry our shoes with the hair drier😂Read more

Biosphäre Potsdam

Because the weather was still bad we decided to visit the tropical center to gain back the holiday feeling😂It was quite nice in there and we saw many cute animal😍

We ate in a BBQ restaurant our diner with spear rips and yummy fries.🍟 We played Black Stories and slept perfectly in real beds🛌
Tomorrow morning we’ll travel back.. We had an amazing time, laughed a lot and we probably have a lot of new arm muscles.. The kayaking was a lot of fun🛶Read more
