      Wurzburg - Germany

      April 6, 2023 in Germany

We had a quiet day on board our new ship AmaReina after doing a ship swap yesterday, due to Lock problems and water level being high, it was built in 2014 and is a sister ship to AmaCerto. The stylish 443-foot river vessel features a glass elevator, spacious accommodation with twin balconies and a heated pool with a swim-up bar. It has three decks and carries 164 passengers and 49 crew.10 Feb 2017Read more

      Day 6

      June 5, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We arrived early and left for our tour to Rothenburg at 8.30, it was an hour bus ride. The town is a walled town and once you were inside the walls it was a village that time forgot (except for the cars) The Christmas shop was amazing, we spent most of our free time in this shop and could have spend all our money there too. We then had a coffee in a beautiful cafe and walked down to the gardens in Pinocchios nose. We wandered around all the little shops and then headed back to the buses at 1.30, as soon as we arrived back at the boat we were off again. Next stop BambergRead more

      Würtzburg

      June 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Well this is it final stop and it’s Würtzburg where we met Hannah’s brother for dinner and drinks. The most impressive part of the city was the large Fortress that sits high above the city with some amazing views! After dinner we went for a walk over one of the cities oldest bridge where it is customary to buy wine from one of the vendors and drink it on the bridge. It was a fantastic sight seeing the sun setting and loads of people drinking wine, talking and soaking up the atmosphere!Read more

    • Day 17

      Wurzburg

      October 19, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We arrived in Wurzburg just after 2pm after stopping at Lidl on the way to get some fresh bread and bakery bits. Ellie had found us a parking spot at a sports Center car park for the night, so far we’ve been lucky and still haven’t paid for any overnight stops.
Getting to the sports Centre was a nightmare as it was right in the city centre, and neither of us really understand the right of way system here so in the end I drove through the city, Turned around and then parked so I didn’t have to cross the flow of traffic. You might think that a little bit of a cop out but the traffic here consists of cars, trams, buses, people and bikes. I do feel as though I need eyes in the back of my head.
As soon as we parked we ate the bakery bits we had just brought and I checked the city on google maps and then we locked Wanda up with a chain through the front doors and the security lock on the outside and set off to see what was about.
During WW2 a large majority of Wurzburg was destroyed but famous land marks have been re-built to the exact medieval specification they were previously, including churches and cathedrals and some streets.
It took us about 45 minutes to walk to what is now called the old town because it looks old with its new buildings and new shops, and then it started raining. We walked through the market square looking around the very small market and made our way to one of the churches which was free entry and although the outside was amazing the inside was abit of a let down.
Then we went to the cathedral that has been fully rebuilt and it is magnificent. We could even get into the cloisters underneath. There were lots of rooms, all with different altars in and it seemed like 5 or 6 smaller churches with a big one in the middle. It’s a strange but magnificent building.
From there we walked back the way we had come until we got to the old bridge which is now foot traffic only and there were hundreds of people dotted along it drinking wine. It seemed to be the thing to do.
Crossing the bridge we then took the very steep walk up to the old city fortress and to walk the grounds was also free but to go inside the museum was €5 each.
We didn’t go inside and if we wanted to see inside the fortress that was even more money and by guided tour only, but what we did see was amazing and once we got to the top we had a magnificent view of the whole of Wurzburg.
It’s an unbelievably busy city and does remind me of London. Infact considering it’s out of season all of Germany has been incredibly busy and it’s mainly been Germans travelling.
From the fortress we walked back to Wanda and when we arrived it was 5:45pm and we had walked 6 miles. Not bad for someone with a cracked rib, but I have found out today that sneezing is excruciatingly painful.
Back in Wanda Ellie made a dinner of Lasagne with fresh bread from the bakery and then it was time to settle in for the night. Tomorrow we start heading south following the route of the romantic road.

      Wurzburg

      October 26, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

We left Senden and headed for Ulm Minster. It is a Lutheran church. It is currently the tallest church in the world. The church is the fifth-tallest structure built before the 20th century, with a steeple measuring 161.53 metres. We then drove north to Wurzburg. Wandered around and had lunch and then booked a room for the night. Had a great dinner, and will head to Frankfurt in the morning. Need to repack and get things ready to make our last treck home. Finished the night with “Apple Strudel” Thank you God for a wonderful day 🙏 ❤️🙏Read more

      Ausflug nach Würzburg

      March 11 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Wurzberg

      August 7, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After breakfast in Nuremberg, we grabbed and luggage and caught a train to Wurzberg - apparently, this is wine country. Storing our luggage at the station, we wandered through the new and old town. Wurzberg suffered extensive bombing in WWII so the buildings outside the old town are not hugely picturesque, but the restored old town and Residence Palace are beautiful. On the pedestrianised Alte Mainbrücke, we had stunning view of the vineyards on the slopes under the Marienberg, the Main river and the old town. So we grabbed a glass of local wine and enjoyed the view (and got told off both for sitting on the bridge and putting our glass down on the bridge - one must always hold their wine!). We both has Weingut Juliusspital, but one dry, one half-dry...both, very good.

On the others idea of town, the 500 year old UNESCO Residence (restored after WWII), the manicured gardens of rose bushes, flower beds and very pointy trees. The nearby Burgerspital allowed us a chance to try some more wine, before returning to the station for a train to Bamberg - beer country!

Beer Index (Wurzberg) - N/A - wine country!

      Sneaking out…

      March 24 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Aha, I caught Tom sneaking out of our tiny room…I am not going to miss an opportunity to shop!
We donned our 3 layers, toques and gloves and headed out for one last look around Würzberg. It has been windy and raining most of the day, temperatures around 6 degrees. It is Sunday and everything is closed except a few restaurants, the Oldest wine bar in town and the Market in the town square. Locals come out with their families and friends for a visit, a beer or glass of wine on the bridge(this is wine country after all). The vineyard here is 4K long and produces some fine wine.
It was a good walk, fastest pace we have walked in days and it felt good.
