      Leipzig: Day 2

      June 22 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we had our first full day in Leipzig. It has a large student population. It was behind the iron curtain and buildings on the outskirts look more Soviet. Buildings in the inner city have a more classical architecture however.

We had breakfast at a Cafe. I had granola with seasonal fruit. Louis and Finn shared a breakfast platter (pictured). It was very good.

We are staying at a campground. It has volleyball and a water park. We tried out both today.

We are now heading into town to watch the games at a fanzone (Ronaldo v Turkey, then Belgium v Romania) and explore the city.

      Leipzig-Egolzwil 15.09.2024

      15.09.2024

Abfahrt mal pünktlich in Leipzig. Schöner fast Vollmond 🌕 in Offenburg.

Read more

      Leipzig

      October 4, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today was our first day with Rainer, our nephew, and his wife Olivia. We drove 2 hours from their apt. and spent the day in Leipzig. Leipzig was part of the former East Germany. I learned a lot about what life in the former East Germany was like and also about the uprisings that caused the wall to fall and the reunification of Germany.
The first pic is of the 4 of us in Leipzig. Pic 2, a painting on the side of a building expressed the frustration of the people. Some of the sayings: “we are the people” “freedom” “free elections” “freedom of the press” “ the wall has to go” “democracy”. (Unfortunately my pics are a little out of order..) Pic 7 is of Nikolai Kirche and pic 3 is the inside of the church. It all started at this church with prayers for freedom on Mondays at 5pm. That evolved into peaceful demonstrations in the streets of Leipzig that lead to the fall of East Germany. Stepping out of that church and walking along the streets suddenly took on new meaning today after I read the history of what had happened here.
Pics 4,5 & 6 are some of the buildings in the city.
Pic 8 is the university library and pic 9 is the “assembly hall and university church of St Paul” that is attached to the library.
The East Germans demolished the church in 1968. The church was rebuilt after the reunification but is now used sometimes as a church and sometimes as a lecture hall.
The last pic shows the contrast between the plain, functional architecture of the East German era and the historic building in background. We visited an exhibit titled East Germany: 1945 to the Reunification. Such an eye opening, thought provoking exhibit.

Highlight of the day: learning the history of Nikolai Kirche, Leipzig and East Germany

      RB Leipzig!

      April 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      RB Leipzig!

Since the World Cup, the boys have been pretty obsessed with football. A premier match in Europe was a must. To afford tickets to a Chelsea game in London would have required us selling one of the boys, so the Bundesliga was a great option.

We managed to get some great tickets to a match in Leipzig, which is about an hours' train ride from Berlin. The atmosphere as you walk from the train station to any sporting event is exciting, and this was no exception.

Jack's spending money was burning a hole in his pocket, and he knew from the outset that his adopted team, RBL would be one place he'd spend it. A quick stop at the merchandise store and we looked like we'd be RBL fans for life. We then made our way into the 50,000 seat stadium and soaked up the chants, songs and pre-game hype.

The game, while high quality and exciting, did not go as planned for the home side. Mainz, the visiting underdog, got the job done with a goal in the first half, and two more by full time. A 3-0 defeat was not ideal, but the experience for the Bilkeys was fantastic. As always, purely for research, we needed to test out the food and beverage offerings and were not disappointed. The Wurst hotdogs were the best, and the beers were excellent. I needed a few to make sure. I can now confidently order 1, 2 or 3 of something from a menu. As I don't know the numbers 4, 5 or 6, it forces us to diversify in what we order...

On our walk back to the train station, Fred was pretty pleased to see that Germany accommodates for Fred sized people with their own doors. Either that or there are elves living in many of the buildings.

After a long day, the train ride home was pretty quiet, and as I'm sure we'll discover more and more, anywhere is a good place to have a nap.

      Zoo Leipzig

      May 18 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Read more

      Doing the touristy thing

      August 15 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

So what would a trip to a new city be without a visit to the local Harley dealer… so many road closures we almost gave up on finding the driveway then ‘bam’ we found the tiny street to get in 🥳
T-shirts & poker chips purchased and a look over the new release bikes before back into the car & negotiate the crazy streets to find the town square.
Enjoyed a coffee and some local cuisine, very pleased to find the menu comes in both languages. The steward could see we were struggling and was very accommodating. Afterwards a stroll along the cobble streets. Beautiful old buildings and the statue of Bach.
Still cannot get over the weeds and undergrowth… Is it a form of air conditioning or pure laziness? Jury is still out.
We head back towards the hotel but first we duck into the local shop “Kaufland” to buy some Jack Daniels and to our surprise they sell Bundaberg Ginger beer … by the crate. It feels like home.
Back to the hotel and fill the fridge with drinks we know.
It’s warming up again so this little black duck needs to find some water & shade….. maybe a cold beer or two 🍻
