Heading back towards Koblenz we were confronted by two closed roads, so after following the 'Umleitung' for each we finally arrived in Mayen significantly later than we'd planned.
We believe stopover used to be beside a park but in the park's place was a the base for a tarmaccing company, with lorries shifting gravel until quite late. Not to worry, it wasn't that noisy and after the drive we were glad of the rest.
Waking up to rain the next morning we shouldered our rainbow coloured umbrellas and wandered around town. Mayen is yet another place with a beautiful town square and interesting looking churches. We picked up some fruit from an extremely cheerful market seller and a few other bits and bobs that were on our shopping list. Two of the people we bought things from asked whether we were Dutch! Will's German is improving to the point he can understand much of what people say to him and even Vicky is getting more confident asking for things.Read more
