Taking a bus from drop point to the cathedral in Cologne. Toured the cathedral and saw the remains of Roman walls and streets. Back on board for lunch then toured the chocolat museum. Took the chocolate train back to the town center. Shopped a little then took the shuttle back to the ship.

    November 1, 2015 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Zons is a small, walled medieval town on the west bank of the Rhein, just 10 or so miles south of Düsseldorf. It's seen a lot in its 600 year history, from French occupations to plagues. The thirty years war left enduring, physical marks on the walls and buildings of the town which are still visible today. All in all, it was a strange autumnal day in Germany, where the sun sat low and cast a lazy haze over much of Zons. Blue skied and chilly, it was the perfect place to spend a slow Sunday morning.Read more

    The Rhine at Zons

    November 1, 2015 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

The volume of traffic the Rhine carries is incredible. It's constant - the long, low barges slowly making their way down stream, or the large cargo ships travelling upstream with cargo destined for Rotterdam and the world beyond. All through the day and all through the night, the boats trail the winding river. one after another, one after another.Read more

    Schloss Dyck

    June 19, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Is it possible to tire of looking at castles? Probably. You'd have to have a real appetite for them if you were to attempt to see even half of the castles that Germany has to offer.

Today, a drizzly day in north Germany, I stopped of at Schloss Dyck on my way home from Mönchengladbach. The pictures will have to speak for themselves because I'm too tired to write anything.Read more

    Schloss Rheydt

    June 21, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Normally I leave my car at in Mönchengladbach and travel to and from work using the train. But, because I visited Waterloo yesterday, I travelled home to Düsseldorf by car on Friday. Today, I returned my car to Mönchengladbach and caught the train back to Düsseldorf. While I was in Mönchengladbach, I decided to visit Schloss Rheydt.

The Schloss itself seems to hold some kind of central cultural significance for the town - it is where most people seem to get married or hold functions on special occasions. The woods and gardens are full of people walking their dogs or their children (people do seem to 'walk' their children). I guess Rheydt's Haigh Hall, although there was no sign of an obscure miniature railway.

The place is infested with peacocks, who don't seem to like the rain much and shelter from it under any nook and cranny they can find. Today was most definitely rainy; rainy and humid, energy sapping.

Getting out of Dusseldorf was slow and hard work, with lots of stopping and starting at traffic lights and what have now. But now I'm out of the city I start to press on and build up some speed. The weather is already starting to improve.

    Willkommen im Paradies

    April 16, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Read more
