      We are in Munich!

      January 19, 2020 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

We arrived in Munich, found the meeting place for the Pilotski! As it turns out we recognize more people than we expected. A large contingent from Montreal base. Quite a few retired pilots.

The bus ride was uneventful and took about 3.5 hours. The Sport Hotel Royer was ready for us. keys, scarves, and info was handed out in a timely fashion. We got our gear rented and checked out the town while connecting with some people I haven’t seen for years. One fellow, Jim Egglestone was on my initial course with Air Canada over forty years ago. He and his wife Denise are here. Denise was a dispatcher for A/C almost as long. It has been good to see them.

There are about 250 skiers attending Pilotski 2020. Almost half are from Canada. The rest are from continental Europe with some Scots and two token Australians. So far we are getting along but somehow I think that as the week progresses and people drink more, we could find some entertaining differences of opinion. We’ll see.

      EvaAir

      December 13, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

Beste Leben 💯

      What now?

      July 15 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

I meet with my friend Utku from freediving, he will host me in Munich. The situation I am in is really upsetting for me right now because I am disappointed with myself for making such a small mistake, a small mistake that has really big consequences. I decided to wait for next day there is nothing I can do now. We went to a park to have a beer with Utku and talk about the options and the scenarios for the future.

      Scenerio 1:

I will find my belongings and continue my journey. (For me this is the best option.)

      Scenerio 2:

I won’t be able to find my belongings and will get a 1 month temporary passport from the Turkish Consulate here. In this scenario I have to give up on some places that I was planning to go due to time and money that I lost. ( I have 43 days on my visa and if I get my temporary passport 3 days later I will have 30 days in europe so its not that bad just loosing 10 days not a big deal.)

      Scenerio 3:

I won’t be able to find my belongings and will get a 1 month temporary passport from the Turkish Consulate here. Give up on my journey and go home.

I really dont wanna finish my journey and go home but I dont know how exactly temporary passport works. Lets just wish that everything will be alright and new day will bring some good things with it.

      A sea of Trachten

      September 20, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today we awoke at the ungodly hour of 4:30 to prepare for our train at 6am from Berlin to Munich. We spent 4 hours on the train and once we arrived we went about our main quest finding our traditional Bavarian garb.

We spent a good couple of hours finding the right outfit for the right price. Once we found the right pieces we had a quick lunch and headed to our campsite. It was a bit out of the way - a train then a bus but we arrived at the tranquil grounds (lie: theres a dj booth and a bar 20m from our tent). We enjoyed some of the included sangrias and beers and prepared for our first night of Oktoberfest.

We got to the Oktoberfest grounds and went on some rides and spent some time exploring the tents before finally sitting down in a seat and ordering some beers. Along with our beer we also got dinner; Phill a pork knuckle and Bec some bratwurst. We got chatting with some locals and enjoyed some tales.

After a while we headed back to the train to get back to our accommodation and spent some time at the after party speaking to some Danish friends. We headed to bed early(ish) for a full day of Oktoberfest fun tomorrow.

Munich Full Day - Bier Garten!

      May 19 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We woke up in the morning and regan walked to get coffees and breakfast. The streets that were filled the day before were so quiet in the morning it was quite peaceful! It’s a public holiday so not a lot of stores or shops were open. After coffee and a little breakfast, we went on a 5K run around the city, stopping and taking pictures at the beautiful buildings! It’s a great way to see the city. After our run, we headed back to our hotel to shower and get ready to meet Marlos friend, Lisa. We met her at a beer garden called, Augustiner-Keller which is a massive beer garden in Munich. There were so many people when we arrived at 12:30 and it was nice because it’s out of the main city centre so less tourists! It was great for Marlo to see Lisa and catch up since they met each other 4 years ago in Thailand! Lisa had to go home but we stayed until around 6:30 PM! Marlo found her new fav drink, a Weißweinschorle sauer which is white wine and sparkling water. We definitely drank a fair share there. After we had enough we walked back to our hotel and ended up getting ice cream and relaxing in our room.Read more

      Munich, day 1

      July 28, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Munich bike ride to see Nymphenberg palace, and Residenzmuseum. Rented bikes at Radius, rode to Nymphenberg, then to Residenz, then to eat at Little Asia on Nympenberger St ...delicious Thai food, reasonably priced too! returned bikes and walked back to hotel
      More detail...
We are staying at the Bavarian boutique hotel. The breakfast is really phenomenal. Kept us going most of the day. Radius bikes opened at 9:00 so we got there shortly after. It is at the central train station. Train station also a good place to exchange dollars for euros.. go to the north side of the trains and go down the stairs near Starbucks to exchange $. It took 30 minutes to ride the bikes from the train station to Nymphenberg. Front desk person at our hotel recommendation and she was not wrong. We fell in love with the carriage house Marstallmuseum and spent a fair bit of time in there. I loved all of the sleighs! Even if that's the only thing you see there, it is worth it. It then took us 30 minutes then to ride our bikes to Residenz museum. Before going in we noticed a church across the street, Saint Kajetan and went in and walked around quietly . Really unbelievable. I have never seen so much intricate plaster work. The church is enormous and so beautiful. It is very hard to find the main entrance to Residenzemuseum. At main entrance you will find the Treasury. Don't miss this. The jewels and diamonds in the crowns and the decoration for the horses are unbelievable.
Also, the theater is a must see but it is hard to find. You leave the main entrance walk back out to the street. Go north to the Lions and then take a right and walk to a big courtyard and look left and above a door it says theater but it is not super obvious. Make your way to the theater that will also blow your mind. We did not make it into all of the buildings and we may go back tomorrow. We were starving and biked to Asian restaurant
After eating we returned the bikes around 5:00 but we could have kept them until 8:00 p.m. The guy that rented us the bikes is an exact doppelganger for our nephew Timmy.
We enjoyed seeing the trains and all of the people coming and going in the station. We want back towards our hotel and stopped in a couple of stores and came upon another beautiful cathedral St. Paul.
We ate Pizza, salad and a yummy chocolate cream puff dessert at Taormina a 2 min walk from our hotel. Excellent. Service was great too.

      Munich - Dinner

      October 11, 2015 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

For our last dinner we headed to another beer hall (Augustiner Bräustuben), as recommended by our hostel. This one was super packed and almost every table was reserved. The waiter at the door was unhelpful-verging-on-rude as we tried to figure out if we could fit in or reserve for later. In the end he told us to see for ourselves that it was full. As we were wandering around a much nicer waiter noticed us looking lost and immediately seated us at a shared table (he got a tip!).

The food and atmosphere were excellent, even better than the Hofbräuhaus I think. I got a sampler dish of roasted pork saddle, swabian ravioli, a grilled meat ball, and pretzel dumplings in a mushroom gravy. Mmmmm. Gyurme had schnitzel and fries, and I had a delicious apple strudel for dessert.

We also happened to be sitting right next to the band :)

      Augustiner-Keller, München, Deutschland

      July 16, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Sonntagmorgen. Aufgehts zur Rundreise durch Andalusien und Südportugal. Die erste wirkliche Reise on my own. Gebucht habe ich bisher nur den Flug nach Malaga, die ersten beiden Nächte im Babylon Backpackers und den Rückflug von Lissabon nach München sowie die Busfahrt nach München und zurück. So weit, so gut. Read more

      A day of contrasts

      September 2, 2016 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

I started the day at Dachau concentration camp. I won't say much but it was a very sobering experience.

From there I went to Dachau palace. The building wasn't open but the gardens were. They were gorgeous. An old orchard, rose garden and overgrown linden trees. Its up high and had views to Munich and the alps, including the Karwendal range which is where I'll be next week.
I had a look around the town of Dachau, it is a very pretty town.

This evening I went into Marienplatz for tea. I found a Baravian restaurant in a building that was over 400 years old.
I had chanterelle dumplings followed by spatzle with cheese. It was all very nice.
