    Day 320: New Year's Eve

    December 31, 2017 in Germany

Last day of the year, and it's been quite a year! Shandos went out in the morning to have a look around, though I just stayed in and worked on videos. We'd already decided that we wouldn't do anything for New Year's, mainly because European cities tend to resemble warzones with firecrackers going off everywhere, and we figured Schnitzel would need the company.

So we stayed in and drank the champagne, beer and wine that I'd bought from the supermarket earlier in the week. Watched the New Year's concert at the Brandenburg Gate from the comfort of our couch; with an assortment of strange acts and awkward crowd interactions. Lots of fireworks going off nearby at midnight - I think they're illegal most of the year except NYE. Noisy, but Schnitzel coped, and we headed to bed around 1am.Read more

    Day 319: More Relaxing

    December 30, 2017 in Germany

Still chilling out in our little hotel room. Shandos has powered through full itineraries for basically the next year, though I'd imagine plenty of things will change between now and then. Planned out some finer details of our Italy itinerary as well. Picked up my medication but otherwise didn't leave the house!

    Day 316: Nuremberg to Munich

    December 27, 2017 in Germany

Finally time to leave! Headed out early since we had a follow-up appointment at the vet for Schnitzel. This time he got his rabies shot and yearly vaccinations, so we were glad to at least get that ticked off. He's getting better, still obviously uncomfortable but every day we can see some improvement.

Back home to check out, and then to the train station where our direct train to Nuremberg was already waiting. It seems to be a popular route, because the train last week going the other direction was quite full, and today's train was packed. So full in fact, that we had to sit in completely separate carriages! It still surprises me that people still leave their bags on seats when the train is packed full, but I guess that's not an exclusively German trait by any means. I had to ask someone to move their bag so I could sit down, and then enjoyed my small bag on my lap for the 2.5 hours south to Munich. Was a bit interesting when the ticket inspector came by, explaining to him that my wife had the tickets and she was in the next carriage!

But he believed me, and all was OK. Arrived in Munich with no further issues, then got the underground a few stops out to where our hotel is. We'd booked a hotel for Munich, since the Airbnbs seemed very overpriced and this place had a good deal. We'd paid a little extra for a larger room with a kitchenette, but on checking in there was no kitchenette! The room was very large, but with a lot of wasted space (just empty corners with no furniture). Called reception and managed to get moved to a different room, this time with a kitchen, though it was a slight downgrade and with not as much space. Still probably above average size for hotel rooms we've stayed in, and will definitely be comfortable enough.

Shandos went out to the shops and stocked up for the next few days, though we were already feeling slightly "loose end"-ish since our planned 7-8 days of relaxing had suddenly become 14 days! Stayed in for the rest of the day, as we're out in the suburbs slightly and it's a bit of a walk to anywhere else.

    Day 318: Sorting Out Meds

    December 29, 2017 in Germany

Main task for today was to sort out a refill of my medication. I still had a month or so's worth, but I figured the best option was to find an English-speaking doctor here and get a prescription. Thankfully, there was a doctor just across the road so I called up, confused the receptionist and then just showed up. Thankfully, you don't need an appointment, though there's this funny thing in Germany where everyone greets each other in the waiting room. Unlike Australia where you don't make eye contact with others!

Waited quite a while, probably 90 minutes, but eventually got in and had no problems. My usual medication isn't available in Germany, but a replacement brand is and shouldn't be a problem (hopefully). Went to pay the 10 euro consult fee and forgot I had no money, so I had to run down the street and find an ATM - a double problem because the doctor's office was closing in 10 minutes! But I managed.

Visited the pharmacy nearby (or the apotheke as they're called over here) and ordered my meds which should be available tomorrow. I got 300 tablets of each size, so at 2 per day I've got enough for 150 days, or about 5 months. Plus my existing stash, means I'll be sorted until around June. Hopefully that'll be the last time I have to get meds overseas!

That problem solved, I went home and just chilled out for the rest of the day, though I did a couple of videos as well. Slowly getting through my enormous backlog from Germany, which I'm hoping to finish and have uploaded by the time we head to Italy on January 2.

Decided to splurge on dinner and headed downstairs to the hotel restaurant where we both had burgers. Tasty, but a bit expensive.

Day 321: Last Day in Germany

    January 1 in Germany

Last day in Munich, and last day in Germany as well! To celebrate, I spent most of it doing videos! Didn't quite manage to get through all of my German WHS videos, but only one left which is about as close as I can get! Went out for lunch to a nearby Asian place, where we had noodle soups (I had a wonton mee and Shandos had a tempura udon). Tasty food! Lots of fireworks detritus around as well.

Quite warm too, almost double-digits which is the first time in a while! I assume it'll drop back down again soon enough, but we're about to head south so it's not my problem!

Schnitzel is about 85% back to normal. Still a tiny bit wobbly, particularly on uneven surfaces like his bed or a doona, but he's getting feisty and playful again which he hasn't been for a while. He ran around the room for a bit when we came back, and wanted to jump up on our legs as well. This is going to be the hard part - keeping him rested and relaxed when he doesn't feel like relaxing any more! It was easy for the first week because he didn't want to do anything. Now - not so much!
