    The big day!
We start with exploring, it is half carnival with HUGE rides. Lots of food and souvenirs.

There are the major tents and then smaller beer garden versions.
We started at hofbrauhaus, it is recommended for visitors. I found that I can order a Radler, which is a Shandy. But I pay the same price as regular beer. We found a table easily as they are not booked until the afternoon.
We had 2 Steins here and then headed to another tent, Spaten in which we met some Engineers from BMW.
We had 2 more steins here, which was the end for us.

Kody was lucky that our host had offered to let him wear his authentic Lederhosen and shirt. It was great to see all members of the family in their outfits, even little children.

We actually forgot to pick up a Stein on our way out due to the fact we were barely functioning. But the next day went back just for the Stein!

    Off to Rome tonight!

    Munich, Campingplatz Thalkirchen, €39

    October 1, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Finally! After 8 years on the road and umpteen visits to Germany (including 3 times to Munich) we are here for the Oktoberfest! As a local told us today, it’s a once a life time experience, you definitely don’t need to do it again! Lunch in town at the Hofbrauhaus was much better fun.Read more

    München parkwandeling

    June 30, 2020 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    Oktoberfest (Day 2)

    October 3, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we planned to catch up with some good friends from our last job who have also travelled to Munich to party at Oktoberfest.

We meet Amie and Sammie at the entrance at midday and head into the HB tent to start boozing. Steins have slowly been increasing in price every year and this year were stung with €10.40 each plus tip.......although that doesn't slow us down. Entering the HB tent we head to the private area at the back and score a special table as one of Dee's cousin is a waitress there and makes sure we're well looked after. Dee arrives shortly after and the fun begins!

5 hours later we emerge from the tent slightly loose footed and we take the girls for a tour of all the cool local spots and rides we learnt the day before. Finally it's 9pm and we end up back at the HB tent with some of Dee's family as we knock back a final Stein before we stroll home. What a brilliant day catching up with old friends.

    Oktoberfest (Day 1)

    October 2, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The traffic across the border into Germany from Austria was crazy. With strong border controls in place due to the refugee crisis our bus trip took twice as long but it's still only mid afternoon with plenty of time to party. Suki's friend Ben lives within 5 mins walk of Oktoberfest so we take a short stroll from the bus station and into one of the many stores selling Dirdls and Leiderhousens. 30 mins later we're suited up and looking the part ready to celebrate in one of the world biggest festivals.

We drop out bags off and head into the festival. We meet Ben at on of the main tents who's taken the day off with a bunch of work mates. Mixing with a bunch of locals (who have been coming almost every year since they were legal to drink) we get an authentic local tour taking us to the best stops and rides. Highlights include:

Devils Wheel - Ground based 'merry go round' which speeds up to throw everyone off with added rope and falling objects - the winner is the last one standing. Fun for all ages and very entertaining to watch.

Toboggan - Fast moving conveyor belt (hilarious watching people fall over) which you have to jump on then climb up the stairs offering and amazing view of the festival followed a quick decent via the slippery slide.

The night is topped off by losing our stomachs (and minds) on the Frisbee ride and we smash down some more festival food and we take the short stroll home.
