      Acropolis of Athens

      July 27, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Forgot to post in Athens so this is a combined Greece post of our time in Athens and Andros. We began in Exarcheia an interesting suburb in central Athens and spent out time there in the bars and surplus of op shops. Went to the Acropolis too and it was beautiful but extremely hot; as Rosie said we witnessed a granny collapsing.
N e ways we ferried on over (the seasickness almost took me out) to Andros and stayed in the Lemon Tree hostel whose charm was only amplified by the eccentric owner Miltos. He was a bit scary though can’t lie but he allowed us to experience so much of the island by telling us abt a daytime hike to another town, a hike down to a waterfall and putting us in the know abt a free pool club. Have to say, my favourite part of the hostel experience were all the really lovely friends we made while we were there 🙃🙃

      Athen an einem Tag

      August 13, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Acropolis and other Greek shenanigans

      August 17, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Day 1 in Athens! We had a massive sleep in after our early morning yesterday and also we're an hour ahead 🤯

We eventually started our morning with a trip to the market to try a Greek (read Turkish but #politics amirite) coffee that is brewed on hot sand. Except it was too hot so I got a cold coffee called a Freddo instead which has foam that was about as thick as shaving cream - glorious. After that we bought many lemon olives from a man who is just so passionate about his olives and would have let us try all of his 20+ varieties if we had wanted.

We then hit the Kerameikos Ancient Cemetery which was also home to part of the old city walls. When the Spartans attacked, they used the headstones from the cemetery for some hasty repairs which greatly confused archeologists. It also had a funky museum with some cool Greek stuff - I liked the dinosaur chickens the best.

We went home for lunch and to avoid the heat and the crowds before heading up to the Acropolis in the evening. Thanks to Rick Steves we learnt about the illusions employed by the architects to make the Parthenon so imposing including slightly slanting pillars and a slight curve in the base! The view down the mountain was also spectacular and it was hard to know which way to look!

      Athen

      July 11, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

      💚💚

      The Acropolis of Athens

      June 3, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

What an exceptional day of exploration! We journeyed up to the towering Acropolis, and were blown away by the iconic symbol of Athens! It was built in the 5th century BC by Pericles. The Acropolis at Athens is both a testament to the city's architectural might and is the birthplace of democracy!

From the lofty heights of the Acropolis, we were overwhelmed by the breathtaking panorama of Athens, extending far into the distance. We could make out the markets of Monastiraki, the silhouette of Mount Lycabettus, and even the Aegean Sea on the horizon.

It was a very warm day, so what better way to cap off the afternoon than with some local treats? We cooled down with some refreshing frozen slushes and iced coffees, the perfect complement to the warm Athenian afternoon. The kids were VERY happy for the treats!

This adventure is just the beginning, and we can't wait to continue discovering what this trip has in store! 🏛️

      Sightseeing Athens

      September 19, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I just need to go to Acropolis every time am in Athens. It’s just so nice to walk this roots where the foundation of the world we live in where initiated. This time I was very lucky with the timing. I could see how soldiers take down the Greek flag and also enjoy the sunset.
And then after leaving the Acropolis down to Monastiraki, there was this street musician - amazing. Listen..

Bottom line, being back in the metropolitan area is nice, but the islands were just NICER!

      Acropolis, Athens

      June 24, 2016 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Then a walk up the Acropolis to the structures on top ... the Parthenon WOW!!!!! There's also the Erechtheion, the Temple of Nike (yep, that's where they got the name from), the Prohylaea, the Beule Gate and more. All in varying states of ruin and restoration. Views from the top are breath taking 360deg overlooking the city of Athens, where 5m people live.

Walked down to Plaka (historic old-city centre) which is a bit of a tourist trap, had lunch (beer, calamari, beer, cold nibbles, and beer. Yum.). Then walked back the hotel, only 30 min and through interesting streets and sites, but in nearly 40deg heat, so now we need more beer.

      The Acropolis, Athens

      October 30, 2018 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Next stop was the Acropolis and I have to admit I wanted to postpone this trip to a sunnier day as it was quite overcast and I love photographing these ancient sites against a bright blue sky whenever possible. But Brad was determined to go today.

With a €20 entrance fee, it is the most expensive site we have visited on this whole trip but I have to admit it was an amazing feeling walking where people worked and worshipped so many centuries ago. Construction of the Parthenon commenced in 447 BC and it is amazing there is still anything left to see.

Over the years attempts at restoration have actually caused more damage and there is major restoration work still happening. Today’s restoration processes involve replacing missing sections with temporary pieces while they search to find the original piece amongst the piles of collected original pieces. It is like a giant jigsaw and it is great to see they are attempting to restore it to its original authentic state.

The Acropolis site also contains the ruins of many shrines and temples, including the Temple of Erechtheion built between 421 – 406 BC, and a theatre, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus built in 161 AD.

The sheer size of these structures makes you wonder how on earth they were built without the modern machinery we have today, and the location on the top of the hill would have added to those challenges. Standing amongst these amazing structures, looking over Athens is a great feeling.
