    • Day 73 - Captain Bens Lazy Day, Greece

      September 20, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

Today we have a boat tour booked with Captain Ben, we had a quick breakfast at the resort then drove down to the port to meet that boat that comes from Antiparos. Antiparos is the island closest to Paros and you can take a car ferry across and drive around in the island. As there are many cliffs and places that need a boat to access, we decided TikTok hadn’t lead us astray and Captain Ben’s boat tour was needed!

We got on the boat and shown to the front of the boat where they have assigned spots for you.

Seeing it’s been windy we were going to follow the windy day charter. First stop was the Blue Lagoon located near an island between Paros & AntiParos. This was our first swim spot and our first chance to jump from the top of the boat. Katie stayed on board while I jumped off from the top.

Second stop was near the small caves on the Western side of AntiParos. This is where you can do some cliff jumping! Katie came in the water and filmed me jumping, of course I did my normal hesitation jitter before jumping off the cliff. After having a swim we went back on board and this is where they handed out the first glass of wine for the day.

Third stop was at Livadi Beach, we had the option to either take the small boat to the beach or swim. We both swam to the beach.
On the beach you could play games or lounge around. They gave us some wine, our first taste of Ouzo, (hell of spirit!) & some snacks like fresh Octopus they had drying out on the back of the boat!
We swam back to the boat to lunch being ready and Captain Ben handing out beers or wine!

Our next stop was the Sea Cave, Katie swam through the caves! This is also where Captain Ben started popping champagne from the boat while the crew handed out cups of Champagne to everyone in the water!

Last and final stop for the day was at Faneromeni Bay, the crew set up the slide in matter of no time and slide down into the water! Even Katie went down the slide… had to get video evidence to prove Katie did it!

As we sailed back to the port they put some dance music on and served wine & fruit.
Once we were back on land, we wanted to get a coffee. We found a bakery near our resort. Now I swear I said two flat whites, what I got was an ice coffee made from the most horrendous instant coffee, as I never heard the machine!
So we went back to where we got a coffee from the day before then back to the resort to relax.

Tonight’s dinner was to be a Greek delight, a Yiro from a local butcher shop. We took our Yiro’s down to a spot overlooking Paroikia town, after dinner we went for a walk along the waterfront.

We tried to go to Naousa to get a drink but this is where every man, his dog & the dog’s goat goes at night so parking was non existent unless you want to pay exuberant prices. So we went back to the resort to relax after a big day.

      The world of butterflies

      July 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today we went on a long car drive in our green Chevrolet Spark rental car to a butterfly natural park. When we got there we realised that there were actually Jersey Tiger moths but they also went through metamorphosis (egg, lava, pupae, adult) just like butterflies. Many of the butterfly/ moths were sleeping. Some flew around us showed and us there red wings. It was a nice way to escape the heat of the day.Read more

      The island of Antiparos

      July 13, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our island hopping has continued with a trip to Antiparos, which means “opposite Paros”. We hired a little dinghy from Aliki in Paros and set off across the sea. Keyala can not shake her sore throat so she had a day resting in the hotel.

Our first stop was in between two islands in a swimming spot called the blue lagoon with turquoise waters. From there we headed to Antiparos and explored some caves along the shoreline.

We stopped for lunch at a little seafood taverna. There was no place to dock the boat so Dale dropped us to shore, left the boat on a mooring and had to swim back in. He was in need of a good drink after the experience and so we had a couple of cocktails by the seaside.

A bit more cave swimming and it was time to head back. Unfortunately the meltemi winds had picked up by then and the trip across the sea to Paros was a bit bumpy. We made it back with a layer of saltiness all over us and smiles on our faces.

Soft homemade pasta for dinner with some limoncello to help the sore throat.

      Antiparos

      July 7, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Antiparos

      June 28, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Paros-Antiparos-Milos

      August 19, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

5 min later het verlossende antwoord: “it’s ok, you can go”. 👌.

Next stop: the Cave of Antiparos.

Handig, dachten we. First time for everything zeker?

Long day!

      Ready for bed 😴

      Antiparos

      August 12, 2020 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Antipiros

      November 1, 2018 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Antipiros is an island very close to Piros. We had signed up for a tour from the resort and left this morning with two American ladies and our guide, Stamos. He owns the resort with his wife, Maria, who was the chef at the cooking night. We got considerably better at understanding his English as the day went on. He referred to our group as 'homogeneous' which apparently meant that we got along well together. Another interesting phrase was that he didn't want to get 'corroded', or in our terms, rusty, so he did the tour every week.
It was a short ferry ride to get to Antipiros and we did some sightseeing and then got on another small boat to go to the island of Despotico. There are no people living on this island, but 1000 goats roam it. There is a big archeological dig there, where they have uncovered a temple dedicated to Apollo dating to about 1500 BC. Stamos was extremely knowledgable about this site as he has made quite a study of local archeology. The temple was destroyed after Christianity came. The Venetians in the 1300's took away a lot of marble to be used in their own Castle and surrounds in the town on Antipiros. They continue to excavate and depend on donations for much of the cost. Tom Hanks and his wife have made huge donations to this and Stamos showed us their house later, on Antipiros. After leaving Despotico our boat captain took us to see the cliffs and the sea caves on the coast of Antipiros.
We had lunch at a taverna and let Stamos do the ordering so we could try many local dishes... calamari, small fish, soft cheese, deep fried zucchini, mashed fava beans and a warm green salad.
We did a short walking tour in the town by the ferry to see the Venetian castle and all of the marble pieces scattered around that had come from Despotico. Stamos thinks many of these should be returned for the restoration there.
Our day ended with a visit to a ceramic shop back on Paros. Beautiful pieces, all hand done by the owner.
      It was a great day!!

    • Day 11

      Antiparos

      October 2, 2017 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today started with a rather expensive cab ride to Pounta as we missed the morning bus and did not wish to wait two hours for the next. Our cab driver, George took advantage of the road (or maybe just ignored the speed limit). Regardless we were flying along at speeds of about 140km/h which paid off when we made the ferry with seconds to spare. My Greek is poor, but I have a suspicion that good old George called the ferry operator and told him we are on route. Either way making the ferry saved us an hour of waiting.

We took the ferry across to nearby Antiparos. On arrival we attempted to hire a quad bike. No success, unfortunately they would not rent us a quad bike as we had no experience and it was very dangerous. I think this wouldn't of been an issue if we weren't female. A male hired one shortly after us and it was pretty obvious he did not know how to drive a quad. With no other bike hire shops open we were stuck with a bus to the Grotte.

The Grotte or Cave of Antiparos is located on the south eastern side of the island, roughly 110 metres above sea level. This cave is believed to be one of the oldest caves in Greece. The entrance to cave is an arch, whch at a guess is about 10 metres high and 20 metres wide. The arch is framed by a small church aptly named St John of the Cave. Slightly inside the mouth for the arch you find a mammoth stalagmite, which is believed approximately 45 million years old and the oldest in Europe.

We then descended into the cave, 411 steps to be exact. The cavern revealed was large and deep, in excess of 100 metres. The cavern had been vandalised with many stalactites being removed and names engraved in the limestone. Overall, despite the damage it was worth a visit just to see the sheer grandness of the cave.

Next, we headed back into town and treated ourselves to some relax time. The local spa, Flora offered some great spa packages. Nicole went for chocolate and I algae/seaweed. We were lathered in our chosen product and them wrapped in a electronic blanket. Eventually, once we were good and sweaty it was rinse time. The package finished with a full body massage. We left smelling delicious (Nic more so than me), feeling refreshed and with soft supple skin.
