    Asi Gonia

    June 30, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read the amazing story of "The Cretan Runner" about George Psychoundakis contribution to the war effort in Crete. Sufficiently moved to make a "pilgramige" to his home village of Asi Gonia. So glad I did.Read more

    Rethymno + Agrioupoli + Georgioupolis

    October 10, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Ben arrives today. Will pick him up from the airport this evening. After a lazy morning with breakfast in town we headed off to Rethymon which is on the way to the airport - the old town is picturesque with a Venetian feel. On the way back from the airport we stopped for a meal. Chatted till 2.00 am.Read more

    September 8, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After a lie in we went to the local bakery for breakfast and tried the ham and cheese pies with tea and proper Nescafe coffee! , we then went to Kalyves to do some food shopping. Back home for a walk around to find our bearings and have a drink by the sea. Back home for a rest and relax with a book in the shade. Tonight we are going Greek with Moussaka and Beef Stifado and a litre of house white, you know it's good when it has no label.Read more

    September 10, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Last night had a great meal in a family taverna in a lovely garden , grandma's traditional Cretan recipes cooked by mothers served my sons. Dakos starter (cheese and tomato on rusks) Mousaka and meatballs in tomato rsauce washed down with a jug of their white wine. Complimentary chocolate cake and a bottle of raki with the bill. Today we went on the bus to Kalyves our next door village for a walk around and to have lunch. Bus was more like a coach, managed to get front seats to watch our driver negotiating hairpin bends and erratic Cretin drivers! Fab. It was one of the town's we were looking at to stay in but on reflection I think we choose the nicer of the two. The town consists of one main road set back from the beach and a small harbour but not much else. The beach is not such nice sand as ours more like fine pebbles. After a walk around we had a late lunch in a beach side restaurant and both had mixed Souvalaki.Read more

    September 19, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today we caught the bus to Rethymmo, a mini version of Chania. The bus ride took us about 45 minutes, that was the express one only stopping a few times. We actually found a 'prom' to walk along. Beautiful blue sea again but very warm and muggy today. We walked around the harbour and then started to explore the small narrow streets, we had lunch, Feta Cheese Salad and did some shopping. Catching the bus home from the bus station was an experience, no signs, no bus stands just a lot of people trying to get on a few buses and being marshalled by Greeks who only just worked out our pronunciation of Kyleves.Read more
