    • Rule #11 (Mykonos & Delos)

      June 14, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

      * there is no rule against repeating a rule, in this case, rule #10 ~
13 day vacation with 10 days at sea…also makes it easier to forget what day it is

Visited Delos today - not really my thing (hope I’m not sounding ungrateful)… Archeological site…
ALSO - a tour guide definitely makes or breaks the excursion…

ALSO ALSO - don’t pet the kitties - someone was bit by one of them and was taken to the local hospital 😬

ALSO ALSO ALSO - The excursion was 5 hours and during the last 1.5 hours I was able to explore the town (AKA shop) and that was the best part of the day 😂

      Santorini to Mykonos

      July 25, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our ferry today is the reverse of how we got here except we go back to Mykonos not Athens.

As always Erin has booked a cafe right by the departure area to protect us from the heatwave. We were told today that Greece has experienced its hottest summer heatwave on record, and we are in the midst of it.

It will be about three hours on the ferry, but it is very comfortable, air conditioning and a good place to read a book.

Mykonos is another popular island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. Known for its summer party atmosphere and beaches such as Paradise and Super Paradise that have bars that blare thumping music.

At first glance Mykonos looks barren with no vegetation only towns. There are five cruise ships in the port, so we head to our hotel and don’t plan to go near town until all the cruise people go back and leave at dusk.

Our hotel is on the fringe of the CBD which is completely free of cars. Only scooters and pedestrians are allowed downtown.

Our boutique hotel was once a bishop's residence and has been in the family for four generations. We loved it. Rooms are small but the environment is so friendly and welcoming. The pool was a welcome relief from the heat for a while.

At 6pm we all met and walked into the town. What a culture shock. The shopping and restaurants are everywhere but if you look a bit deeper you see Mykonos has a proud history.

Erin explains the streets are all designed in a paving design that once coped with open sewerage. They also painted them with limestone to disinfect. The corners of the houses and balconies are rounded because it is so windy here, it limits the noise of the wind. The houses have a concrete bench out the front which most think is for cushions and for sitting on, but they were originally for getting on and off your donkey.
We walked to the Iconic 16th-century windmills, which sit on a hill above Mykonos town. They crushed grain using the high winds. Across from them is Little Venice where the houses are built up to the water. We walked along the front of restaurants where you can get wet at times.

The port is stunning, we only got a glimpse of the sunset because the cruise ships block the view.

Our restaurant was expensive, but the food was good and with the best view of the harbour. Walking back was an eye opener. The whole town is buzzing, and it is only 10 pm.

      Mykonos beaches

      July 26, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The hotel is lovely. The courtyard view from our room is impressive.

We are on a combined tour today of Mykonos island and we have been told to pack our bathers. We have also been told the cost of a day bed on their beaches costs 80 euros. Gulp. No wonder the majority of Mykonians are millionaires.

The population of Mykonos is only 10,000 with 20,000 support workers for the peak of tourism. There are 100,000 rooms available and each day cruise ships drop up to 8,000 guests at the wharf.

There is no vegetation here, maybe a few grapes. The rocky landscape means locals build rock walls to define their boundaries and to keep a few animals.

First beach is Super Paradise Beach. This is a very secluded beach for the rich and famous. Day bed at the front is a mere 170 euros for the day.

Next stop, a brief visit to a local monastery established in 1767. It was built well away from the town but now it is surrounded by the expanding property boom.

Beach number two is Aphrodite’s Beach named after two hills that is said to once belong to the goddess Aphrodite. We all know what they are supposed to represent but you need an imagination.

Last beach is Ano Mera beach where we stopped for lunch. Some of the group stayed but we preferred the calm of our hotel pool. Shad went off for a manicure with Erin.

By evening we were to puffed out to go anywhere. Pool time now.

      Hotel Olympia

      June 4, 2016 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      Old Town

      September 12, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Breakfast is amazing across the road at The Blu Myth. They are serving brownies!!
I have grabbed, olives, pistachios, dolmades. Yum

Athena wants to sit by the pool. I want to explore, so I leave her to catch the bus to Mykonos old town. It takes me 5 minutes and I am here.

I wander straight into the shops. White walls with white painted cobblestones everywhere.

      EVERYWHERE

I love the blue, red, aqua painted door and window shutters.
I buy a small stone boat and chat to the shop keeper.

I just walk. Forever. It is a maze around here of skinny pathways.
I take a hundred photos. Loving the scenes of steps and stairways and bright pink bougainvillea hanging over head. A stark contrast against the sunlit white.

I walked upward to the windmills. Absolutely amazing. Loved them. The wind up here is something else though. Could not hold my phone as had to hold my dress down.

      Full on wind.

Walked down to Little Venice. Small little houses with no entry path in front. The waves come up and rise and spray everywhere all over the paths.

Walked into the interior paths. Took photos. Of cats. Lying asleep in the shade somewhere. Loved seeing their relaxed bodies whilst people walk past.

How clever to make the town like this.
      A white maze of wonder.

I came across an outdoor movie theatre. It plays tonight at 8.30 and 10.30pm.

I try to make out the movie name with the red umbrella on the poster and the actors names below in english.

Timothy Chalemet headlines along with Elle Fanning.
Well that's it I am in.
Ha, ha, ha. Tra, la, la!!

I realise it is Woody Allen's latest movie - 'A Rainy Day In New York'

I message Athena to see if she is interested in going to the movies under the stars tonight?
      Absolutely,yes, sounds wonderful.
      Hooray!

Walking along a bit further, I came out the other side of Little Venice and sit at a cafe for a bite. I face the green and blue ocean.

Little wooden boats bob madly around. A smaller brown one was thrown around so much, I could not take my eyes off it. It had a special little dance.

Ready to head back to our hotel.
Walked back through and easily caught a bus back to Petinos Beach.

Athena was still on her lounge bed and still sunbaking.

I went up and blew up the lilo, I had bought yesterday. It looks a bit unstable. Think I may try it in the pool tomorrow as the wind may take me out to sea.

Athena messages would you like a bourban?
This is not a question that ever needs to be asked of me. There will only be one answer.

We sit in the restaurant overlooking the beach and drink and share our day.

Then we both hit the sun loungers with our bathers on to catch the last rays of the day at 5.30pm.

I pace myself to get ready for a long night of dancing. Athena says she want to go to Scorpios beach club.

As this is her wishlist for this trip, I tell her, 'You lead the way and I will follow.'

She never moved from her bed. At 8.00pm (me getting restless) I say come on, let's go. She instead puts on her Pj's and says we'll do it tomorrow.

OK, but I lay there awake listening to the nightclub music pumping loud until 4.00am. My body aching to go.

But I did not want to do this without her as she chose this particular thing to do for her birthday.
I am wondering if she will fulfil her wish yet, or leave for home regretting she missed out!
