      Preveza

      The name means "Passage" because it is between Epirus, Central Greece and the Ionian Islands. It is where Octavius Augustus defeated Antony & Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. There are ancient monuments all around the area and we will visit them later. We spent 2 nights anchored off the town and wandered the lovely lanes festooned with gorgeous vines and flowers, swam at the beach with a mineral spring where the locals swim for good health (so I'm cured of any unknown ailments!), and had an amazing dinner with 4 other B.C.ers. Fortunately Bob kept his opinions about catamarans (condo boats he calls them) to himself since 1 couple has one! They spend a lot of time here so had a favourite restaurant where we were treated royally with ouzo, bread, spreads, olives, dinner plates, wine, dessert and liqueur for €12 each! We spent 4 hours sharing adventures, foibles, repairs and boating life.
      We had coffee the next morning with a UK couple who also spend a lot of time here and they shared their time, stories, information, funny anecdotes and kindness. We'll see them in the Spring too.
      We did some reconnaissance after taking shelter from the rain⛈ and found the tourist office, bus station, customs and Port police where Bob was admonished for not going to the Port we said we were going to upon leaving Corfu! More administrative, bureaucratic challenges. We bought pastries to make the paperwork nonsense more palatable!      Read more

      Zig, Circle and Zag

      We spent Friday morning puttering and since we weren't traveling far to Gaios further down the island, I went to the village to the lovely young woman who could do our laundry and to shop for a few things. I was alone, motoring in the dinghy, in a beautiful harbour...😍😃
      Later, Bob felt the need for exercise besides swimming to the shore so he rowed us around the point at the harbour entrance and back. Off to the village again to pick up the laundry and off we went down the coast about 5 n.m. to Gaios. The town was busy and looked quite lovely with shops, people, restaurants but there was no room to tie up or to anchor so we came out again and headed back towards Lakka. The wind and waves had picked up and we were unsure of other anchorages so we went back to Lakka, a secure harbour. Our entertainment was watching a German boat anchoring: he set out 2 bow anchors and had his wife swim to shore with a line to tie to a rock! He had started so close to an Austrian boat that they decided to move over ☹. The process took over an hour of adjustments!
      The roosters woke us up Sat. morning and we set off down the west side of Paxos. A very different landscape from the forested east side with rocky cliffs, caves and striped layers. I was hoping to stop and swim and explore at the Blue Caves but there was a bit of swell, limited sandy bottom, and rocks! so we circled around, took in the view and carried on. We passed a stone arch and went into Mongonissi Bay where we could/should have come to the previous night as it was next door to Gaios! We turned and set off for Preveza on the mainland. It's where we'll be leaving the boat for the winter and where we can explore before the expected stormy weather arrives. We are in good company with other boats we've seen in other harbours and where everyone we've met is leaving their boat for winter. We're anchored off the town and will stock up and fill up then sail to areas near by before coming back in a week. The coastline coming in has dropped and ends in a salt marsh before rising up again.       Two Rocks Bay - Preveza

      Von Antipaxos ankommend, übernachteten wir
      nochmals in der schönen Bucht TWO ROCKS BAY.
      Am nächsten Morgen, nach einem ausgiebigen
      Frühstück, Motorsegelten wir Richtung Preveza.
      In Preveza angekommen, mussten wir feststellen, dass gegenüber vor einer Woche doppelt so viele Yachten am Stadtquai angelegt haben.
      Also absolvierten wir unser erstes Röm.-Kath.
      Anlegemanöver im 2024.
      Gut vorbereitet und mit lieben Helfer an der Mole,
      gelang uns ein problemloses Anlegen.
      Bei W- und NW Wind liegt man hier ruhig.
      Dies war auch für die nächsten Tage so angesagt.
      Schon bald drang der feine Duft von grilliertem Suflaki zu uns rüber. Wie ein Magnet wurden wir angezogen und erlagen dem verlockenden Angebot des Restaurants.

      PREVEZA
      Erbaut am Eingang des Ambrakischen Golf ist
      Preveza eine moderne Stadt, die gleichzeitig
      Verwaltungs-, Handels-, intellektuelles und
      touristisches Zentrum der Präfektur ist. Schöne,
      traditionelle Gebäude schmücken den Hafen und
      das historische Zentrum, während die
      Fußgängerwege und Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen mit
      Tavernen und Cafés an die Inseln erinnern. Zu den
      vielfältigen geistigen und künstlerischen
      Aktivitäten der Stadt gehören regelmäßige
      Konferenzen, Ausstellungen und Festivals. Preveza
      wurde 290 vom König von Epirus, Pyrrhus, auf den
      Ruinen des alten Verenice erbaut. Umgeben von
      wunderschönen Stränden, seltenen
      Lebensräumen und alten Denkmälern, wurde die
      Stadt von Dichtern und Schriftstellern - wie
      Marcus Aurelius und Karyotakis - ausgewählt, um
      sich der Kunst zu widmen. Auch heute ist Preveza
      sicherlich immer noch ein Ort der Inspiration.
      Durch die Kombination der reichen Natur und
      Vegetation mit den traditionellen Ouzerien und
      Tavernen entsteht eine sehr idyllische Umgebung.
      Der große Kai mit den schönen neoklassizistischen
      Gebäuden bildet den perfekten Rahmen für
      erholsame Spaziergänge, während Sie dem
      Rauschen der Wellen lauschen, die sich am Ufer
      erheben. Eine Attraktion, die alle Besucher sehen
      sollten, ist das Schloss Preveze, das einen
      herrlichen Blick auf die Umgebung bietet. Mit den
      Villen, Schlössern, malerischen Gassen, den
      Gärten und blühenden Höfen, mit der
      geheimnisvollen Atmosphäre des
      Nekromantischen Orakels von Acheron und der
      monumentalen Architektur des antiken Nikopolis
      ist Preveza zu jeder Jahreszeit voller
      Überraschungen.

      Um von der Aktio Marina nach Preveza zu
      gelangen, musste man früher die Schiffsfähre
      nehmen. Mittlerweile wurde der Unterwasser-
      Tunnel Aktio Preveza gebaut.
      Der Aktio-Preveza-Unterseetunnel ist ein
      Unterwasser-Straßentunnel über die Mündung
      des Ambrakischen Golfs in Westgriechenland. Sie
      verbindet Epirus und die Stadt Preveza am
      Nordufer des Golfs mit dem Kap Aktio in Ätolien-
      Akarnanien in Zentralgriechenland. Der im Jahr
      2002 fertiggestellte Tunnel ist ein wichtiges
      Infrastrukturelement in einer unterentwickelten
      Region und verkürzt die Reisestrecke zwischen
      den beiden Seiten des Golfs, die bisher nur mit
      der Fähre möglich war, erheblich. Es ist der einzige
      Unterwassertunnel in Griechenland.
      Der Tunnel hat eine Querschnittshöhe von 8,6
      Metern und eine Breite von 12,6 Metern. Die
      Durchfahrtsbreite beträgt 10,6 Meter und die
      Durchfahrtshöhe 5,4 Meter. Der Tunnel ist eine
      zweispurige Fahrbahn und umfasst eine 4,0 Meter
      breite Seitenspur und einen 1,3 Meter breiten
      Fußgängerweg in jede Richtung.
      WATERMAKER
      Wie ihr mitbekommen habt, hat mir ein gröberes
      Problem mit dem Watermaker Sorgen bereitet.
      Ist doch der Watermaker, zusammen mit den
      Solarmodulen, garant für Autarktes Reisen.
      Vor dem Einwintern habe ich ein spezielles
      Cleaning Programm laufen lassen. Das hat alles
      prima funktioniert. Nach dem Ablaufen dieses
      Programmes gilt als nächstes, bevor man den
      Watermaker das 1te Mal wieder in Betrieb nimmt,
      ein START-UP Programm laufen zu lassen.
      Diese Tage habe ich das Ausführen wollen und
      nach dem intensiven studieren der Anleitung
      unter Pkt. 1 das Depressurization Valve
      (Druckentlastungs Ventil) ganz aufgedreht. Dann
      Flushing Buttom 5 sec. gedrückt und los gings.
      Und…. es spritzte über dieses Druckventil laufend
      Wasser raus. Innert kürzester Zeit war der ganze
      Boden überflutet. Also Abbruch und überlegen.
      Anleitung nochmals lesen aber dort steht explizit,
      Ventil abschrauben.
      Nochmals probiert, selber Effekt und zusätzlich
      Abbruch mit der Anzeige, dass die Batterieleistung
      zu schwach sei. Nur noch ?????
      Über eine FB Gruppen (Schenker Watermaker)
      habe ich den Tipp bekommen doch nur mit 2
      Umdrehungen das ganze laufen zu lassen.
      Und siehe da jetzt hat es funktioniert. Sehr cool.

      Preveza, Vonitsa and beach cows...!

      Who knew cows go to the beach too! We'd seen the herd on the country road near the marina but woke up and heard the herd and wouldn't have been surprised to see them under our boat! We got on our bikes to ride around the 3 marinas here to look at the millions (billion?) of $$ in yachts and equipment. Saw a few boats that we'd seen in our travels last Oct. then to the beach outside our fence and there were the cows cooling their hooves! Watch out for the the cow patties on the sand!
      We decided to take a short drive down the south side of the Ambracian Gulf to Vonitsa. We had to take a detour after coming upon the aftermath of a horrific car-motorcyle crash. We went to the beach to clear our heads and to give the authorities time. We later proceeded along the rolling country roads. We wandered among the ruins of Vonitsa Castle and to the waterfront where we saw the Aussies who were docked there! They invited us aboard their catamaran and we spent time yakking. We joked about who was following (stalking?) who! After leaving them, we drove along the waterfront to Church island, crossed the pedestrian bridge and wandered a path around the island amongst the pine forest. A beautiful sunset to end the day and a time to reflect how fortunate we are.      Read more

      Corfu to Preveza

      After a day of getting the boat "ship-shape", Sam and I decided to hire a scooter to explore inland and to the less sheltered west coast of Corfu. On Helen and Steve's last night we had eaten at a restaurant serving the most delicious olive oil and with a bit of research we discovered that not only was it multi award-winning but it was produced 40 minutes from Corfu Town! Unfortunately our moped was limited to 50 km/h so 40 minutes become over an hour and we were swiftly reminded just how uncomfortable a moped can be! Thankfully the road hugged the coast most of the way so we were treated to some gorgeous views to make it all worthwhile. On arriving at the olive farm we were treated to a private tour (a perk of being a little too keen and arriving just after opening!) of the museum and modern olive mill, followed by a tasting led by the son (and current generation of a long line of olive millers). After a morning of "education" we decided to treat our inner children at the local waterpark.

      The following day we headed northwest towards Palaiokastritsa, where I tricked Sam into visiting not one but two "old things" in a day, a Byzantine castle and a monastery. Luckily I got away with it as the castle had beautiful views and we found a lovely lunch stop between the two. That evening we headed back to the sailing club for a delicious dinner (including tuna tartar with the most delicious mango vinaigrette!) accompanied by live jazz, perfect!

      With mosquito season in full swing and having disturbed enough of Sam (and my own) nights last year with 3am Spanish inquisition style mozzie hunts with a headtorch, I decided to up the prevention level another notch and fitted a mosquito net in the aft cabin with the hope that this, plus the existing screens at the windows and doors would keep them at bay. Time will tell.

      We set off from Corfu Town back across to the mainland and Syvota but chose to anchor nearer the town there rather than back in the Blue Lagoon this time. Even though the anchorage itself wasn't quite as picturesque, it was angled to capture the sunset perfectly and we watched as the sky turned the most glorious shades of red and gold!

      The following day we sailed further south down the Greek mainland, beyond Parga to a beautiful anchorage called Two Rocks Bay, with clear turquoise water, plenty of space and a clifftop bar with stunning views. We liked it so much we decided to stay an extra night to give ourselves a chance to explore and get a few jobs done that we couldn't do in the marina. Although Elia's team had done a great job with the seacocks we had been a little concerned to watch them attach our new anodes to the propeller shaft as the boat was put in the slings to be lowered back in the water. Rightly so it turns out, having noticed an odd rattling noise that then mysteriously stopped we dived down to spot that both anodes had come loose and were no longer there. Anodes are much easier to attach when the boat is out of the water but we didn't want to risk not having them that long so we had to get creative. Without dive gear on board we fashioned a makeshift system with a tube extension to a snorkel. Not a perfect solution but enough for Sam to get the new anode in place.

      We also decided to revarnish the toe-and rub-rails as they were looking rather tired and we had run out of Semco. We swiftly remembered what a mammoth task it is and why we had decided against using varnish last year. It's horrible goopy stuff and needs to be thinned to different consistencies, sanded between coats and then this process repeated between 7 and 9 coats with 24 hours between layers. In true bodge-job fashion, we decided that 2 coats would probably be OK and went off to explore the bay and rocks on the paddle board.

      After two nights in Two Rocks Bay and with a nice wind forecast for the day we hauled anchor and travelled down to Preveza Marina. Preveza has now taken the title of our new favourite marina, with friendly, helpful marineros and a great selection of shops and restaurants in walking distance. Also, having experienced showers in rusty portacabins with no locks, showers with only ice-cold water, showers in the same room as the only public toilet on a pontoon of around 50 boats, we now appreciate a good shower block when we come across one and Preveza is now officially top of the leaderboard, it was like a spa!       Spontane Nachtfahrt ⛵️✨

      Tag 15 & 16: Ankunft in Preveza, der neuen Heimat von „Joker“ ⛵️.
      Wir nutzten die Zeit um vorab die Einwinterung abzuklären und besichtigten das Trockendock.

      Eine super Brise Wind kam nachmittags auf. Wir setzten die Segel und kreuzten gegen Norden auf. Das Boot lief super bei bis zu 22 Knoten Windgeschwindigkeit.

      Leider war der geplante Hafen aufgrund des Seegangs zu riskant zum Anlaufen und die Ankerbuchten nicht genügend geschützt. Wind und Wellen wurden stärker und die Sonne ging allmählich unter. 🌅
      Um 21.00Uhr siegte die Vernunft und wir beschlossen nach Preveza umzukehren. Eine Nachtfahrt stand an✨🌙

      Dann ging alles recht schnell: Segeln einrollen, Taschenlampen und Fernstecher positionieren, Schwimmwesten mit Lifebelts anziehen und die Positionslampen einschalten. Mit dem großen Wagen✨ im Rücken fuhren wir 3h zurück.

      Höchste Aufmerksamkeit war geboten, damit wir mit keinem anderen Boot kollidieren oder eine Untiefe übersehen.

      Die spannendsten Aufgabe stand jedoch noch bevor😓. Einen Ankerplatz suchen, alle bereits ankernden Schiffe ausfindig machen und den Anker erfolgreich werfen. Nach einer Stunde und 2 erfolglosen Anläufen sitzt er endlich ⚓️😊😬🙏🏼

      Das Abenteuer Griechenland geht bald zu Ende und das nächste Ziel ist bereits gesetzt.

      Nachdem meine Pakete eine Woche beim Lieferdienst lagen, ohne das ich es wusste, hat sie mir gestern ein freundlicher Mensch mitgebracht. Somit kann ich weiter.

      Gut, weit gekommen bin ich nicht wirklich, aber ich wollte mich hier in Preveza noch mal um Internet bemühen und dann weiter

      Motor angemacht und Disko: Handbremse, Bremsbeläge, ABS, ESP, EDC Alles leuchtete und die Handbremse war fest. Hurra. Also immer etwas Gas gegeben, bis die Bremse irgendwann gelöst hat und gleich mal die nächste MB Werkstatt rausgesucht, aber nach dem rangieren war alles gut. Keine Disko mehr. Sehr gut. Doch keine Dreckskarre

      Also erst mal an die Tankstelle. Die Reifen wollten alle etwas griechische Luft. Sollen sie haben. Tank auch wieder voll gemacht. Man weiß ja nie.
      Dann gemütlich Richtung Preveza zum Lidl. Einkaufsliste abarbeiten. Danach auf einen Parkplatz im Hafen und prompt einen fiesen Kantstein runter gefahren, den ich nicht gesehen hatte,

      Scherben im Auto zusammengefegt, Auto gestaubsaugt, Hunde geschnappt und zum Handyshop marschiert. Es war 15.45 und die hatten seit 15 Minuten zu. Machen heute auch nicht mehr auf. Läuft bei mir.

      Okay. Also Altstadtbummnel und ab in eine Taverve. Das warl wirklich lecker. nur fahren ist nicht mehr. Also bleibe ich heute Nacht hier im Hafen, versuche es morgen noch mal mit dem Internet und warte ab, was sonst so passiert.

      Das kleine Örtchen PREVEZA wurde uns von anderen Reisenden empfohlen.

      Wir machten einen Spaziergang durch die schönen engen Gassen und entlang des Hafens.

      Da heute 06.01. ein gesetzlicher Feiertag in Griechenland ist, war wahrscheinlich die gesamte Ortschaft auf den Beinen. Die Straßen-Cafés und Restaurants waren gut gefüllt - es herrschte Partystimmung.Read more

      Auf nach Preveza

      Montag Früh kamen nochmal die Handwerker. Es war ein schwieriges Unterfangen mit dem Autopiloten... Um 13 Uhr konnten wir endlich den Hafen verlassen. Dieses Mal konnten wir segeln!!? 2 Stunden später funktionierte der Autopilot plötzlich nicht mehr richtig. Hermann telefonierte mit den Handwerkern hin und her. Wie waren kurz davor umzudrehen. Doch dann bastelte Hermann mit der Technik herum und es funktionierte wieder alles. Leider haben wir dieses Problem immer wieder auf der Fahrt und er muss es ständig richten... Irgendwann war der Wind nicht mehr stark genug und wir mussten wieder mit Motor fahren. So sind wir dann um 04:00 Uhr morgens in Preveza angekommen. Um 3:00 bekam Marina Hunger und machte uns Rührei und Bratwürste.

      Die ganze Fahrt über hatten wir wunderschönes Wetter!! Der Sternenhimmel war unglaublich. Was soll ich sagen? Die Stimmung auf dem Meer ist etwas sehr Besonderes. Erst war ich nicht scharf darauf, in der Nacht zu segeln und dann konnte ich mich nicht sattsehen am Sonnenuntergang, dem Mond und den Sternen!      Read more

      Eine liebe, definitiv. Also wenn ihr ein wirklich schönes Städtchen sehen wollt dann ist das die richtige Adresse. Wir bleiben gleich 2 Nächte. Ursprünglich wollten wir ja nur die Wäsche waschen. Das ging dann aber von 9.30-15.30, bzw. wir gaben sie ab und es wurde gewaschen. In der Wäscherei kann man auch noch Duschen, was wir dann am Nachmittag auch machten. Da das Wasser aber nur kurz warm war, wars dann sogar gratis. Wir fischten noch am Hafen, ohne Erfolg, ein Grieche neben uns, warf sein Hacken aus mit Gewicht und zog es mit einem hohen Tempo zurück und er hatte ab und zu Meeraesche, er schenkte uns einen, was total süss war. Und er war sogar lecker…
      Mittags ging dann unser Küchen Wasserhahnen kaputt, der hat ein Mikroschalter der wahrscheinlich defekt ist. Leider gibt es in Griechenland nur 3 Camping stores, alle 4 h oder mehr entfernt. Wir klapperten die vielen Marine läden ab am Hafen, doch alle haben das falsche System. Dann noch Haushaltswarengeschäfte und ein Sanitärinstalateur, alles erfolglos. Aber durch diesen Spaziergang lernten wir die Stadt kennen und vor allem die Altstadt. Wunderschön. Viele Kaffees, Restaurants, die sich alle sehr mühe geben. Überall kleine Lichter, Schneeflocken aufgehängt etc. extrem schön mit den kleinen Gassen und Geschäften.
      Wir übernachteten am Hafen. In der Nacht war ein kommen und gehen auf dem Parkplatz. Teils standen Leute sehr nahe am Camper. Somit wieder wenig Schlaf. Am morgen klopfte es an unserer Tür. Christa öffnete und ein junger Mann, wahrscheinlich Geistig etwas eingeschränkt, fragte sie via Handy ob sie alleine Lust für ein Treffen hat, und machte etwas komischen Gesichtsausdruck. Auf die Antwort ich habe einen Mann und sicher nicht gab er nicht so rasch nach. Irgendwann hat er dann realisiert das ich keine Dame des Striches bin und ist weg gefahren…
      Wir versuchten weiterhin den Wasserhahnen auf zu treiben, weiter ohne Erfolg. Der Shop in Thessaloniki hat eine Website. Mit Telefonieren und da hier viele Deutsch können, schafften wir es einen Wasserhahnen zu bestellen an eine ACS (Paketstelle) in Pylos, mal schauen, Freitag sollte er da sein. Wir hoffen sehr.
      Wir gingen noch Spazieren und Griechisch essen. In eines der süssen Restaurants in den Gassen. Hier bestellt man als Tisch und jeder nimmt sich was er will. Wir hatten dann ein gemischtes Fleischteller mit Pommes, Preveza Bier und Kids süss Getränke und ich hatte noch die Frittierten Käsebällchen. Und das ganze für 50 euro. Hier ist das meiste wirklich nicht günstig aber das war ganz ok fanden wir, es war wirklich auch viel Fleisch auf dem Teller und sehr lecker dazu.
      Wir schliefen die zweite Nacht auf einem anderen Platz in Preveza, da es da Gratis Wlan hatte. Dummer Fehler von uns. Es hatte anscheinend gleich eine Disko daneben wo lange noch lauten Betrieb war. Naja wiederum eine Nacht mit wenig Schlaf….      Read more
