      Lunch @ Katerina’s

      On a back street, we found Katerina’s … a gem of a restaurant inside one of the Little Venice houses. The establishment is named for Katerina Xidaki, a local woman who at age 18 became the first professional female captain of a motor vessel.

      There were no tables available on the tiny balcony, which was in the sun anyway. So we gave up the scenery to sit at the only table available in the A/C-cooled dining room.

      The menu offered a selection of Mediterranean dishes, with seafood featuring prominently. We opted for a bunch of mezes (appetizers). The portions turned out to be quite large … saganaki; feta cheese wrapped in phyllo, deep fried, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds; calamari; and tempura-style zucchini slices with tzatziki sauce. Mui ordered ouzo; I opted for an Alpha, the local beer on the menu. Everything was delicious and plentiful, making us happy that Mui had not opted to also order the mussels. Dessert — a mix of baklava and kadayıf — was compliments of the establishment … and a nice wrap to a very nice meal.

      We continued our meandering stroll through the streets, making our way back to the harbor. We came out not far from the water taxi drop-off point. Having purchased R/T tickets this morning, we made our way onto the next taxi to depart. It was right around 3:00p … just as planned.      Read more

      Day 6

      Island hopping

      It was a bit complicated to drop off the rental car and get to the port in Santorini for the ship to Mykonos. The port is a teeny tiny place, no room for car rentals, lots of crowds and chaos. So we dropped off the rental car at the airport and took a van to the port. As we waited for our boat, we watched in amazement as busload after busload got picked up and others got dropped off. Pretty well organized, I must say, and those bus drivers can turn their huge vehicles on a dime. Very entertaining and a bit scary to watch them back up a busload to within 6 inches of the end of the dock, with no guardrail, no nothing. And then they maneuver around like they were riding a bicycle.

      The boat stopped at Ios and Naxos, and by 1 or so we were in Mykonos. We took the bus into town and then had about a half hour walk from the very top of the old town, down to the old port/harbor, and around to our hotel. Very nice views from where we sit! It has been cloudy with a few showers, so we have limited our time to a few walks around the port. I have NEVER seen as many tourist shops in one maze-like set of twisty-turvey lanes. There is absolutely nothing else here — it’s all for the tourist trade. Shopping on Mykonos, or anywhere for that matter, is not high on my list, but being here was the only way we could get out to the ruins on the uninhabited island of Delos, birthplace of Apollo among other things.

      We are going to have a late dinner and sleep in tomorrow. Looks like the rain is gone but we may have some clouds. So we will save the trip to Delos till Wednesday, which is forecast for cool and sunny.      Read more

      Day 7

      Tourists in Mykonos

      So, today we had no plans, other than to spend the day walking around town and chilling out. This is NOT my normally preferred itinerary. But hey, it worked! We just had a lazy day, up to the iconic Mykonos windmills, down to the touristy trappy lanes, round and about. Saw a great sunset, enjoyed sitting on the water, and we were just generally in relax mode.

      I continue to be stunned by the numbers of people who get off a huge cruise ship, wait in line, and then come and walk around to shop and eat. They then have long lines at the old port to get a bus to the new port, to get a boat to the cruise ship. My good friend at the hotel reception (who turns on the AC when I go down to the fitness center) tells me that it is just a fact of life on Mykonos, and that the island very much depends on this tourist onslaught.

      Finally had a really great moussaka, and a bite of Joe’s amazing baklava. And a perfect ending on our hotel balcony with a view of both th old and new ports. Tomorrow Delos!      Read more

      Delos

      After a quick trip to the archaeological museum to see an amazing huge urn depicting the Trojan War, we hopped on a ferry for the half hour ride to the very tiny island of Delos. It is now uninhabited, but was settled about 5,000 years ago. It is the birthplace of Apollo, so that makes it pretty sacred. For centuries it was a prosperous commercial port. The whole place was destroyed by pirates in about 60BC and has been uninhabited since then. Excavations are ongoing. We spent hours walking around, climbing up and down, enjoying great views over the Aegean, and in a nice change from Mykonos, there were no crowds!

      Tomorrow we get an early plane to Athens, and head northwest in a rental car. Monasteries, Delphi, and some mountains are our desination.

      But now time for one more stroll around the harbor as night falls.      Read more

      A gentle day watching the marathon runners cross the line outside our apartment.. golf claps from the balcony aplenty. A bit of shopping, a bit of dining and a bit of reading, watched the footy, but bed by 1030 again. Have fun party people - loving the double glazed windows!Read more

      Mykonos

      Heute gabs einen kleinen Tagesausflug nach Mykonos. Ehrlich gesagt war ich ein bisschen enttäuscht oder habe mir einfach zu viel von dem Ort erhofft. Die kleinen Gassen im Städtchen waren zwar ganz schön, aber das war es dann auch schon. Vielleicht lag es auch an den unzähligen Kreuzfahrtschiffen und den Touris oder ich bin langsam einfach etwas zu verwöhnt von schönen Orten. 😎😅

      Morgen gibts nochmals einen Tag auf Naxos und ab Freitag gehts dann weiter nach Santorini. Mal schauen ob mir das dann besser gefällt.🤷‍♀️      Read more

      Tag 10/1: Mykonos - Du Idyll ❤️

      Steffi: Mykonos, ja was gibt es dazu zu sagen! Wir haben uns verliebt! Es ist atemberaubend schön. Wir konnten uns gar nicht satt fotografieren.😆 Ein Motiv jagte das nächste. Wir wissen gar nicht wie Rhodos morgen das toppen soll?!
      Völlig platt sind wir am Mittag zurück aufs Schiff. Moritz ist um 15 Uhr zum Artisan Brotback-Kurs und ich genieße einen Cocktail - nach wie vor schniefend - in der Außenalsterbar. Um 19 Uhr legen wir wieder ab. Wir genießen einfach jede Sekunde und es ist ein befremdliches Gefühl, bald wieder in den Alltag zurück zu müssen.       Day 3

      Meandering in Mykonos Town

      The only other time we were in Mykonos was aboard Celebrity Constellation … in 2013. On that occasion, we went to the Island of Delos by boat, and then returned to Mykonos Town, had a very late lunch before heading back to the ship. The short stroll we did then gave us some familiarity with the layout of the town today, which helped us make our way around easily.

      For this visit, I had planned for us to take the bus to the quaint village of Ano Mera. The ride, I read, was 20 minutes and busses departed every 30 minutes. Excellent. Except that when we got to the bus station on the far side of the harbor around 11:30a, we were told that the next bus was at 1:00p … even though the schedule showed one at noon. Time to jiggle our plans.

      The Archaeological Museum was temporarily closed. Mui wasn’t prepared with the necessary accoutrements to spend the day on one of the beaches with invitingly clear water. So, we decided on a meandering stroll in Mykonos Town followed by lunch. Using Google Maps to loosely guide us, we enjoyed the quaint atmosphere of the white-washed buildings sporting colorful doors and trims … mostly blue, but some red, grey, or orange as well. The narrow, cobblestone streets were delightful. That we rarely came across any others except the locals, added to the charm.

      Our meanderings took us up to a couple of windmills — icons of Mykonos … but not the more famous ones by the waterfront that are known as the Lower Windmills. One of the windmills we came to alongside a hilltop road had been restored; the other was not so lucky. Nonetheless, they both made charming subjects for photos … and they offered great viewpoints for aerial looks down to Mykonos Town.

      Eventually we made our way down to the windmills on the waterfront. A few clicks of the camera, and we made our way to a beach for a stroll to Little Venice … the historic houses that were built by the wealthy sea captains. Along the way we checked out a couple of places for lunch, but moved on when they did not prove satisfactory. That, in fact, worked in our favor … but that’s for the next footprint.      Read more

      Mykonos bis Siros

      Heute Morgen sind wir relaxed aufgestanden, habe mir eine Erkältung geholt, war schon früh wach und habe mich noch mit meinem Hörbuch verweilt. Jetzt sind wir in Mykonos und neben uns 4 Kreuzfahrt Schiffe, ich muss euch ja nicht erzählen, was das heisst!!! Anyway wir machen, das beste aus unserer Situation und sitzen in ein kleines Cafe gegenüber der Windmühlen. Wirklich schön, dann sieht man die ganze Völkerwanderung. Ich melde mich später mit einem Update, wenn wir los fahren nach Siros. Es ist nicht mehr viel Neues passiert und nun sind wir in Siros und werden heute Abend nicht auf dem Schiff essen.Read more
