      Santorini Summit and Kamari Beach

      July 17, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We drove from Oia to Profitis Ilias and took in the island views from Santorini’s highest point. From here you get a 360 view of the entire island. Also at the top of this mountain, is the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah where 9 monks live.

The wind was pretty fierce all day and we learned that an island slogan is “Santorini, where everyday is a bad hair day.” Being at the highest point and the fierce wind gave us our crazy hair pictures.

Our final tour stop was at Kamari Beach which is at the southeastern side of Santorini. Because of the volcanic ash, the beaches have black “sand” which to me doesn’t really qualify as sand like our beaches back home. This “sand” as they call it is more like black rocks, and I’m not sure how people were walking around barefoot on it. Although it was a hot day, the water felt chilly and because it was so windy, there were whitecaps and strong waves.

We spent some time walking on the boardwalk where every restaurant had a view of the beach serving an array of fresh seafood. The boardwalk was filled with various shops, restaurants, and hotels. This would be a great place to stay for a beach vacation.

How did you get back to the tender? I’ve heard there is the cable car which has long lines or walk down the slippery donkey steps.

You have to take the cable car or walk down the steps. The lines weren’t super long while we were there, but I've heard they can be long. We did the cable car both waya and it was never long. If you were to opt to walk, definitely choose to walk down as it is ALOT of steps.

      Santorini / 2

      September 23, 2021 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Heute morgen war ich nochmal am Hotelstrand. Es war wieder keiner da... Einsamkeit pur.
Da ist also IMMER richtig was los.

      Estate Argyros Winery

      July 17, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Our guide recommended the 8th generation winery called Estate Argyros Winery not far from the Kamari beach area and right beside the Santorini Brewing Company…which, unfortunately was closed today, a Sunday. She dropped us off at the winery where we enjoyed a wine and food pairing tasting with a tour. This winery prioduces 400,000 bottles per year and exports 60% of it. Most of the grapes they grow are white grapes, about 80% versus much fewer red grapes. The tasting room was extremely modern and had incredible lightning. The winery is undergoing an expansion, and this location started in 2014 and was completed in 2018, with more construction to increase wine production.

      We tried 4 wines today:

1 - Assyrtiko - the most popular grape with 100-120 yr old vines, recommended to drink w food, this wine can hold for up to 10 years which will reduce the acidity

2 - Athiri - an aromatic grape, easy to drink and ready to drink now, this is our favorite and we ended up buying a bottle to take home

      3 - Vinsanto - sweet dessert wine

4 - Rose - blend of white and red varietals

We also took a short tour to learn more about the unique wine production in the area. The guide shared the 2 different ways they grow the grapes. It’s very unique in that the grapes are on the ground versus hanging down. The grapes don’t grow in soil, but in volcanic ash. Because it’s in volcanic ash, they don’t have to use pesticides. The main way of growing the grapes is twisting the vines into a circular formation that looks like a bird’s nest. The “vine nest” traps the morning humidity providing the perfect climate for grape growing. Because there are fewer red grapes, they are trying to find new ways of growing them to increase production.

Yes! Just one bottle of the Athiri. I wish I could have shipped some home, but it was outrageously expensive.

      Paradise in Greece

      September 2, 2019 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

We had another lazy morning, oh no that’s right, I had another lazy morning😂😂. Pete went out to pick up his washing and came back after hiring a car for me to drive! We thought we would five around for the afternoon and check out the beaches. Oh well we managed to get to one beach, it turned out to be a great black sand beach with a great bar and excellent food. We couldn’t force ourselves to move so we spent the afternoon at the one beach.

Well we are here to relax so we were happy. Driving is pretty much the same as in Italy, just keep moving and stay on the right. Haha not easy when you still have problems working out your left and right!

We managed to find our way home after a few wrong turns, and then got ready for dinner and another sunset! We went back to our great restaurant and had another yummy dinner and watched our last sunset in Santorini. Heading off to Syros tomorrow morning!

      Day on the Water

      May 31, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we have the catamaran trip. We are going on an 8-hour trip around Santorini. We will stop at 3 different beaches and have a nice lunch/dinner on the boat. So off we go. We have to meet at one of the local hotels to be picked up in our coach. As with anything here, we use Google Maps to find our path. I have to admit that Google Maps is a pretty good app while we are here but even it can’t always navigate the donkey paths here. We end up making a few U-turns and take twice as long to get there but we make it. It is a 20-seat coach but quite comfy. We all have air vents and the seats are better than some airlines. We stop at various pickup stops and soon we are full. Our driver expertly navigates the windy, twisty roads next to the rock cliff where we could easily plunge to our death. Then the finally when he backs up the coach downhill through parked vehicles to get to the dock. Apparently, Laura has found a new life skill she wishes to conquer.

We have to walk downhill a little way (which means it’s going to be uphill on the way back!). We get onto the boat and get our safety talk as we pull out of the harbour. This is a nice size vessel which can comfortably carry about 24 people. There is plenty of shade and plenty of sun, take your pick. I sit up top with the captain under the canopy so that I can get a good view of what is around us. He tells me that the company started out with only 2 catamarans and has built up the business to 20 catamarans 2 speed boats and about 150 car rentals. The ride is smooth and the scenery is gorgeous. I love being on the water. For me, there is something freeing about being on the water. The wind in your hair, the colour of the water, the smell of the salt water, yeah this is me.

We pass by the black beach, white beach and the red beach. Our first swim spot is near another beach just a little bit further. They drop the anchor and get out the masks and snorkels, and lower the steps. Off we go! The water is a little shocking at first because it is cold but you get used to it quickly. As I have mentioned before, I am a lousy diver here because of the salt water I float like driftwood. However, this is a good thing for swimming. There is a little bit of current and you have to exert yourself a little to say within range of the boat. I put on my mask and snorkel and get transformed into another world. In this world there is tranquility and quiet. The water is that clear, slightly turquoise colour. There are small fishies swimming around. Some small rocks in the sandy bottom but no coral. We swim for about 15 minutes and then I get back on board. I dry off in the sun but then head back to the shade. I am not a sun monger so I try to stay in the shade as much as possible. (And reapply the sunscreen frequently) The girls are down below in the smoking area having a great time chatting with new people.

The next swim spot is the red beach. When we get there, the crew hand out life preservers to everyone because there is a hot spring there and this will tire out the swimmers quickly. I stay on board for this one. I’m not really into the hot springs’ thing. Laura and Nicole however, go in. They have a nice swim there and decide that the mud from the hot springs is good for a facial. The hot springs are basically sulfer so I’m not sure how good this is for their face. However, they are having fun. (Check out the picture).

Once back on board we are treated to a wonderful meal. The have flounder (breaded and fried in olive oil), chicken and prawns (done on the BBQ), pasta, Greek salad, tzatziki, and bread. Everything was great and I especially liked the flounder. They have unlimited beer, white wine and water all day long. We are having a great day out.

There is one more swim stop but the three of us stay on board. We head back to the harbour and disembark. We thank the crew for a lovely day. Then we head back up the hill to our coach and head home. We are all bushed from our day out on the water. The link for this lovey cruise is: https://www.santorini-yachts.com/

Laura however has something special in store for all of us. Apparently the green dinosaur onesy has made it on board. So with a quick change, Laura treats all to her kind of crazy. I'm surprised we didn't have to walk the plank for that one.

After a shower and a bit of relaxation time, Laura and I head to the grocery store. We cannot drink the water here, so we need to pick up some more for coffee and drinking. I am driving this time (my second time here) and I think I’m getting used to it. Once again we are using Google Maps and have miss some turns because they just look like driveways or alleyways and not streets. However, we get to the store and have no issues. The grocery store here is pretty good, with lots of selections. We get out stuff and head back home. After a small bite to eat.

We head off to bed to get a good nights rest…or so we thought. Stay tuned for the next adventure.

Santorini - schwarze Strände & Touristen

      June 6, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Soviel von meinem "Was ist Was?!" Wissen.

      Inselerkundung

      August 4, 2021 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

🤣😌Read more

Yesterday we went to a little place up the street for breakfast and I had amazing pancakes with cream cheese and jam in between! Then we walked 20 minutes to the town of Fira/Thira and went in some of the shops and got to see the amazing view. Then we went to the pool in our hostel for a bit and then made our way to Kamari beach which is a black sand beach. Then we just came back and chilled after a long day.Read more

      Wine & chill

      May 20, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Our first full day in Santorini has been wonderful, though a tad chilly. That did not stop us from having a great time relaxing at the resort. We all did our own thing this morning after meeting up for a tasty breakfast spread - full of Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, honey, and poached eggs (for Igs and I). After brekky I got a lovely 90 minute massage, Igor napped, Chams went town walking.

We met up a few hours later for lunch - Greek schedule. We've finally learned that peak lunch is 2-3 pm, with dinner at 9-12. So we rolled up to a local tavern around 230, had a spread of appetizers and then went to a winery - Gavalas. They have vines 100+ years old! Some of the only vines that didn't get destroyed by phylloxera (they were saved by the sandy soils).

After much wine we had a little siesta before grabbing dinner in town at Raki. Almost everywhere we've been we've enjoyed fresh food and outdoor seating in perfect weather!

      To the islands

      May 19, 2022 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

After a very rocky ferry ride we made it to Santorini. It was the coldest day of our trip so far so we didn't mind spending it traveling - much napping occurred to keep the seasickness at bay. We all made it without incident 🙌

Our ferry docked into port which is at the very bottom of some steep cliffs, nestled into the rock face basically. We rented a little car - a Nissan (). It was a squishy fit for all of us and the luggage.. but we crammed in and started our climb up the hill! Shout out to Igs for the A+ stick shift driving on steep switchbacks, a lot of handbrake action.

We're staying a bit outside the major cities at a fancy Marriott and plan to relax for the next few days with wine tours and of course good food!
