      bye China 👋🏼

      January 2 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Hong Kong was loud, big, colorful, crazy, and very exciting! 🏙️💥

The fast-paced city is one of the top 10 most expensive cities in the world and now has around 7.4 million inhabitants. Hundreds of thousands of people live there in tiny apartments.

On the other hand, there are incredibly rich people in this city. Shopping mall after mall with expensive luxury brands are lined up here - they are really everywhere!

Would I want to live here? Definitely not, but definitely worth the trip!

      Hong Kong 2

      October 20, 2017 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      14.1 km gestapt.

      Hong Kong high rises

      January 8, 2019 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Wow Hong Kong is huge! We arrived yesterday afternoon and went to Central Kowloon to do some exciting shopping. Never seen streets like this before! Adam has been exploring various chicken street food stalls today while I went to meet a work client for a couple of hours. Very dull but I got picked up and dropped off in a brand new tesla with gull wing doors so totally worth it! We are off to the Victoria Peak this evening by tram to get a view over the city ☺Read more

      The last hop

      January 11, 2019 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Onto our last stop before home as we fly to Singapore today. We spent our last day in Hong Kong exploring the Tai Hang quarter and Victoria Park. These are much quieter than the city centre and full little streets and local eateries. Following another handy hint from online we found a rooftop of mall to sit and watch the skyline for the evening. The city is full of expensive rooftop bars but we have no outfits deemed appropriate for their dress code so we brought our own snacks and wine to our free rooftop instead. We have loved this city but it does truly never sleep!Read more

      Hong Kong Part 1

      April 21, 2018 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I had a great time working together with my English collegues from Shanghai, Bejing, Chiang Mai, Tokyo and Seoul. Met some really awesome people who were great to work and to spend some quality time with. Funnily, one turned out to have studied in Kiel at the same time as I (though we only knew each other from sight) and another one had lived in Hannover and worked in Hildesheim before moving to Shanghai 7 years ago. We'd definately met and have some common aquaintances. The world is such a small place.
Hong Kong has changed a lot since I was here in 2000 but it's definately a great place to discover. Still a mix of old and new, west and east, clean and dodgy. Though we worked most of the time of my stay there I did get the chance to do some sight seeing. We also checked out the party zone of the city. How strange it felt to have a drink in the middle of the street.

Victoria Park and Meg's monkey challenge

      January 30, 2019 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

As we arrived too early to check-in directly to our hotel room, we dropped off our bags and started to explore the city.

Victoria Park is a great place for kids from toddler to pre-teen to enjoy some fun skill-building and play. On this day, Meg was absolutely determined to get across the monkey bars - even exhausted and jet-lagged. Several tens of tries later and with constant encouragement from Poppy, she finally made it! Of course, there was also the motivational factor of the championette monkey-bar-crosser “watermelon-helmet” girl who looked like she was about 4 that no doubt helped fuel her determination.

Other highlights included the really nice micro-lakes for slow and fast RC boat racing, as well as the mysterious black path of deliberately arranged pointed rocks that you were supposed to walk over without your shoes?! We all did it and let’s just say - not the most highly recommended part of Victoria Park.

      Hello Hong Kong

      March 18, 2019 in Hong Kong ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Time to say goodbye to Hanoi & Vietnam. Sad to leave Vietnam but ready to leave Hanoi - just too polluted. We had a taxi to the airport for a 10.30am flight with Vietnamese Airlines. The flight time was only 1.5 hours so we were impressed to be served lunch with a drink and coffee in that time. Caught the MTR express to Hong Kong Island and then the metro close enough to walk to the hotel - all so impressively efficient. After checking in our first stop was the bakery we went to every morning last time we were here - so happy it is still here.Read more

      The light show

      March 20, 2019 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A hazy start to the day so spent some time around Central square visiting the gardens, the cathedral, shopping malls and walked along next to the peers. In the evening we went back to the Avenue of the stars in Kowloon to watch the light show that takes place every evening on the skyscrapers. Lots of people were there to watch and it was a good atmosphere.Read more

Hong Kong markets, markets & more market

      July 16, 2017 in Hong Kong ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

With the rain, heat and humidity, apparently this time of year is not the best time to visit. Its close enough to the factories of southern China that when the wind blows from the north, you won’t see a blue sky for days, which was the case for 4 out of 5 days we were there. We caught the high speed train to Shenzhen, where we crossed the border to Hong Kong.

Public transport is really easy to navigate and really affordable. We had absolutely no trouble figuring out the maps and working out how to get around and found it only cost a few dollars (AUS) to get around. No trip to Hong Kong is complete without a trip on the Star Ferry – Jump aboard the Star Ferry from Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui. It’s super cheap and a convienient fast way to cross the Harbour, plus you get to see Hong Kong from the water! We did this quite a few times, as it was quick and easy from our shoebox hotel. I confess, it was also probably due to the fact that there was one of the best coffee stalls on the island there as well!

Food here is ridiculously priced – our first nights Mexican meal came to a grand total of $200 AUD, for burritos! This would be more like $60 at home.

Mong Kok – Hong Kong is a very modern city but it has its older areas that are definitely worth a visit. Mong Kok is an area of old and new, an area plastered with neon signs, just like the Hong Kong you see in 80’s movies.

Ladies Market is one of the most well-known markets in Hong Kong, with over 100 stalls. They sell knock-off handbags, sunglasses, clothes and plenty of stuff you didn’t know you needed. Be sure to bargain hard. Some people say it’s not all it’s hyped up to be, I have to agree. It is possibly one of the worst market we have been to in Asia, and definitely not the market I remember. Best advice is to go in with very low expectations.

Temple Street Markets is a better option, but still not a patch on other markets in SE Asia. It runs from 2pm to midnight and you can buy everything from gifts, clothes, art, handbags and luggage – we were hard pressed to find anything worthwhile though, particularly after areas of Northern China.

      kurzer Boxenstopp bei IKEA

      November 5, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Fazit: Die Kohlensäure ist auch in Hongkong bei IKEA alle und es gibt leider keine sauren Gurken zum Hotdog. Röstzwiebeln auch nicht, aber das ist mir ja bekanntlich egal. ;)
