      Baños termales

      November 5, 2023 in Hungary ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Read more

    • Day 176

      Budapest

      September 9, 2023 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We had a very good sleep in and slower morning after boat party last night!

We walked to the central markets to explore the handicrafts (including beautiful leather and lace products) and also to try làngos, which was recommended by our guide yesterday. It is a kind of deep fried pizza base traditionally served with sour cream and cheese, and it is absolutely delicious!

After our much needed hangover food, we walked along the Danube to the location of the ‘Jewish Shoes’ memorial. These are bronze shoes that symbolise the Jewish people who were shot and pushed into the Danube river by the Hungarian Nazi soldiers, the Arrow Cross. It is very moving and such a devastating aspect of WWII history that we had not heard about before.

We then made our way to St Stephen’s basilica, where we were able to go inside and also explore the treasury as well as a fantastic view over Budapest. There was plenty of ornamental gold inside the basilica but one very interesting item is the mummified right hand of St Stephen! After exploring the church, we went up to the roof for some brilliant views over the city and even got to hear the bells as we were there on the hour!

After the basilica, we went back to the hostel to chill out as we had another eventful night planned! We started with dinner in the Karavan food truck lane, enjoying a traditional Hungarian goulash served in a bread bowl, followed by drinks in the original ruin bar, Szimple Kert. We had heard stories but nothing can describe how cool it is once you walk in - it is like a district with many different types of bars within the one building, with walls covered in graffiti/decorations.

No visit to Budapest would be complete without experiencing the thermal baths and so we made our way to Sparty, a rave party in a spa! It is just like going to a spa, except with DJs, fire twirlers, dancers of stilts, dancers with reflective mirror costumed, acrobats and other live performances going all night with thousands of people! We had such a fun night enjoying drinks and dancing in the thermal baths! We enjoyed a beer each and wine but the drinks are definitely expensive at this party! After we felt we had had the proper experience, we took a long leisurely walk back to the hostel to sleep.

      Rutschpartie ins Thermalbad

      September 27, 2022 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Read more

      Széchenyi Bath

      July 26, 2017 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

What to do on a windy day with impressive cloud formations covering the sky; setting the light of the city? No need to ask that question twice! After forcing ques for the ticket and poor changing facilities the largest Tyrkish Bath in Budapest is quite an experience. Outdoor pools along cafes and bars, indoor pools with different temperatures in beautifull old rooms with impressive roofs and colonnades; one more beautifull than the other. Almost felt like a museum. It was quite crowded though, and one definitely wish to wear slippers between the pools. Our searching for dinner was accompanied by silent rain and a beautifull sky. For our last night of the journy we had a great gullash and yet another version of Pina Colada. And finally we tried different gins which is not gonna happen again!
Perfect ending of a perfect summer holiday.

      Szechenyi thermal baths

      July 1, 2019 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

After a late arrival we literally dropped our bags and ran out to get a bite to eat so the unpacking has been left till this morning. I check on Google maps and the Szechenyi thermal baths is within 50 mins walk and as I've explained to Amber, no better way to explore a city than walk. I just keep stopping to look around me. The city is so beautiful . Budapest is split in two, one half called Buda and the other half Pest. We are staying on the Buda side but at some point during the week we'll venture a across the water.
Our walk takes us through streets flanked by huge houses and government buildings until we stumble across a restaurant I've been recommended called Vimtage garden. It's a beautiful place adorned with flowers very vintage chic. I order the mussels and have to say they're the best I've ever eaten. Bellys filled we continue although the temperature is 36 it feels more like a full on hike than a stroll through the park. .
Eventually we arrive at the baths and boy they don't disappoint. It's one of the largest medicinal baths in Europe, supplied by two thermal springs. The water is on average 38 degrees which is about the same temperature as the weather at the moment. We spend the whole day here just chilling. There are also cold pools as well as a full sized swimming pool and I get in and out the hot and cold hoping for some medical miracle for my sciatica and I have to say by the time I get out there is definitely some relief from the pain. It's a miracle!!!!!
We aim to catch the metro back but when we get to the ticket booth the machine has over heated and gone blank so we can't buy a ticket. If you get caught without a ticket it's a £100 fine so Amber and I walk through the park and jump onto a tram that looks like a flexibus.
There are multiple modes of transport here and it's so easy to get around. We head back to the apartment and glam up for the evening.
Amber treats us to a beautiful meal by the river and as we walk back we decide to take in an ice cream. The problem is we can't find a place that sells it and end up walking all the way back to the river to get one. Amber happy we head back to the room xx
