      Budapest

      Still snowing in Budapest. Beautiful old city of two halves. West Bank of the river Danube is called Buda has the castle and palace and hills. More up market than the eastern side of the river which is called Pest (pesht).

      The snow eases and the rain is wickedly cold. We tramped around the castle, down to Elizabeth Bridge and the tunnel. The tunnel was made to protect the bridge. The mechanism is maintained by the ‘keep of the bridge’.

      Christmas market for mulled wine and spicy hotdogs for lunch.

      Dinner was cruise on Danube with folk dancing to complete the evening.      Read more

      Jour 18 - Une histoire hongroise

      Notre journée a débuté par un petit déjeuner dans « le plus beau café du monde » : le New York café de Budapest. Situé dans un somptueux palace, nous y avons pris un petit déjeuner bien copieux 😋

      Nous sommes ensuite allés visiter la Maison de la Terreur. C’est un immeuble dans lequel des crimes contre l’humanité ont été commis pendant et après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.
      La Hongrie a été assiégée par les soviétiques jusqu’en 1989. Tous les opposants au régime communiste, les religieux, professeurs, agriculteurs ont été soumis aux répressions du régime en place, guidé par l’URSS. Ce musée nous a permis de constater les horreurs subis par le peuple Hongrois jusqu’à il y a 30 ans seulement.

      En sortant du musée, le temps était à l’orage, nous en avons donc profité pour aller déjeuner et nous abriter. ☔️

      Quand le soleil est ressorti, nous nous sommes baladés à vélo dans le Nord Ouest de Pest : Basilique Saint Étienne, Parlement, musée ethnographique, … puis nous avons traversé le pont Margit pour nous rendre à Buda. Nous y avons découvert la citadelle Halászbástya au coucher du soleil : magnifique paysage 🤩
      Nous sommes allés jusqu’au Palais de Budavár que nous avons pu admirer de nuit.

      Après ce petit périple de 10km à pieds et d’une 20aine à vélo, nous sommes rentrés nous reposer à l’appartement.

      Demain sera notre dernier jour à Budapest et donc le dernier jour de notre périple à vélo.

      Last day in Budapest

      I began having issues with my cell phone today - I buy a different SIM card in the different countries I go to, and right now I’m using one that roams all thru Europe. Well last night it started misbehaving and stopped roaming. So made it a bit harder to get around - slowed us down some.

      We went to the Buda side of the river today - Mathias church, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle and Gellert Hill. The bastion was really unique - almost looked fake, like it was produced for Disneyland or something - but it was authentic from ages ago.

      Everything and everywhere continues to throw stairs at us — was a big day today having to walk up to the castle and then up Gellert hill - 50 flights. It almost makes us cry at this point when we see a massive stairway to go up, but … just keep going.

      Day 8–11

      Budapest - Die Paprikastadt ;)

      Von Donnerstag auf Freitag waren wir im wunderschönen Budapest. Die Stadt ist wirklich beeindruckend. Wohin man schaut gibt es schöne Gebäude und Kultur.

      Gestartet sind wir am Donnerstagabend bei der St.-Stephans-Basilika mitten im historischen Zentrum der Stadt. Die Kirche wurde erst im späten 19. Jh. fertiggestellt und ist mit ihrem Kuppelbau insbesondere bei Nacht unglaublich eindrucksvoll.

      Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter auf den Berg der Zitadelle im Südwesten der Altstadt - ein Relikt aus den Zeiten der ungarischen Revolution. Die Aussicht soll einem einen Rundumbllick über ganz Budapest ermöglichen. Als wir allerdings nach einigen Höhenmetern am Ziel ankamen, gab es nur einen Zaun zu sehen, denn die Zitadelle war geschlossen. (Restaurierung oder so ein Quatsch)

      Weiter ging es zu meinem persönlichen Highlight, der Fischerbastei. Eine riesige Anlage im (nach Wikipedia) neoromanischen Stil. Hab ich vorher noch nicht viel gesehen, gefällt mir aber extrem gut. Insbesondere die kleine Kirche sieht toll aus.

      Der nächste Stop war das wohl eindrucksvollste Gebäude in Budapest. Das Parlament war einfach atemberaubend. Wir haben den Blick von der anderen Flussseite genossen und waren wirklich begeistert.

      Weiter sind wir auf die Donauinsel gegangen, wo wir den wohl spannendsten Springbrunnen der Welt anschauen konnten. Zu gemischter Musik von Klassik bis Pop sprühte der Brunnen im Takt zu verschiedensten Liedern beeindruckende Muster.

      Den Abschluss haben wir in einem lokalen Restaurant mit einem für den Geldbeutel sehr fairen und für den Magen sehr ungesunden Preis-Menge-Verhältnis gemacht. - Mega

      Egal wo man hinschaut, Budapest scheint in der Altstadt keine hässliche Ecke zu haben. 10/10      Read more

      We got a snow day in Budapest :))

      We finally got a snowy day!!! We decided we'd make the most of it by going to the Fisherman's Bastion, it's a big white castle at the top of the buda hill and it had a great view of the city. The bastion is about 200m from the buda castle and between them is a really quaint cobblestone street, walking along that street with the bastion in front of us was a little bit like being in Harry Potter. It was kind of a grey day so the view was a bit foggy but it was still awesome to see Budapest looking all wintery and white. After the bastion we went to the same pizza place we went to on our first day here and then went for our usual happy hour stein at the local pub on our street.

      Ozge came to visit over the weekend and we went out to a nightclub that spencer was told would be "a real hungarian party". It was the most standard club we've been to all trip with the only notable feature being that all the dudes were built super thick. We went with ozge and an Aussie we met on new years. Spencer and the Aussie dude said they had a horrible time because of the big dudes but I had fun :) Ozges friend recommended a hungarian fish soup restaurant which we tried tonight. The soup was really hearty and filling, quite similar to Goulash but better. It's been so cold this week, today some of the paths were frozen and i was able to slide around like I was wearing socks.      Read more

      Buda bastion des pêcheurs

      Nous rejoignons en métro l autre côté du Danube, pile là où nous avions pique-niqué en arrivant, d'avant l'église St Anne
      Escalier jusqu'au bastion des pêcheurs et église St Matthias
      Attendons ensuite quelques minutes devant le palais presidentiel pour voir la relève de la garde. Plus drôle que solennelle, les soldats font de petites chorégraphies...

      More walking!

      After the central market, we walked some more! In Budapest there are 7 main bridges. One of them (being the most monumental) is the Chain Bridge which was built in 1849!!! We visited the castle region of which there were many buildings I could not tell you the name of 😂 the most important one was the Buda Castle.Read more

      Budapest ist wunderschön mit seiner lebendigen Mischung aus Geschichte und Neuem.
      Ein bisschen schade, dass z.B. auf dem Schlossberg im Margareten Turm und für kleine Bereiche der Fischerbastei stark überhöhte Eintrittspreise aufgerufen werden. Das fühlt sich eher wie Nepp als wie Erhaltung an (bspw. Fischerbastei 1 Person 3 Euro für max 50 m, der Rest war eh gesperrt oder für Kaffees/Restaurants reserviert).

      Das positive Gegenbeispiel gab es in der Ruinenkneipe Szimpla Kert. Urig und ein bunter Mix aus allem was man sich vorstellen kann, ergibt eine herrlich relelaxte Atmosphäre in der Kneipe im jüdischen Viertel. Die Preise waren für die ungarische Hauptstadt sehr moderat (bspw. 2 große Gläser Wein 7 Euro).

      Gestern wäre ein Tag zum im Bett bleiben gewesen, eiskalte 4 Grad und von Windböen gepeitschter Regen. Dennoch haben wir uns auf den Weg zu den Labyrinthen unter dem Schlossberg gemacht. Sicherheitshalber noch mal nach unserem lieben kleinen Scheißer geschaut (unser Volvo) und einen Strafzettel entdeckt.
      Bei der Post am nächsten Tag den Zettel einer verständnisvoll lächelnden Dame hinter dem Schalter in die Hand gedrückt, 17 Euro bezahlt und als learning abgehakt.
      Wichtigste Erkenntnis: Parkzonen in Budapest sind für Nicht-Eingeweihte nicht zu durchschauen. Unseren kleinen Scheißer haben wir auf einen Langzeitparkplatz in den äußeren Bezirken im Westend verbracht und 3 Tage später unversehrt für 7500 Forint (ca 20 Euro) wieder abgeholt.
      Da unser AirBnb so zentral lag, sind wir meist zu Fuß unterwegs gewesen oder haben die App Budapest Go genutzt. Eine Fahrt mit den Öffis kostet derzeit 90 Cent pro Person. Das Ticket, gilt, bis man umsteigt.      Read more

      Budapest Day 2 - Baths, and Buda Castle

      In the morning we had delicious breakfast with the Eggs Imperial - salmon Benedict with trout caviar - delicious! Then I went to one of the Budapest famous thermal baths. The opulent baths located in one of the hotels are from 19 century are so big that even though there were lots of people, it didn’t feel crowded. Very relaxing me healing experience! In the afternoon, we went to Buda Castle Walkative tour, which took us around the castle hill, up many stairs and round gorgeous buildings. Afterwards, we walked back to the hotel, crossing Danube River with gorgeous views.Read more
