Lazily exploring the areas around us

      January 3 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

So we've been in Budapest for almost a week now its made a great first impression! A few things ive noticed are:

The heads on all the beers are enormous, at least 3 finger widths. It's pretty annoying coz u have to wait a billion years before it's drinkable

There are Thai massage places everywhere, like two on every street. I kinda wanna try one coz they must be so cheap with all the competition.

Everyone speaks great English here, the best of anywhere we've been so far.

And all the buildings are astoundingly beautiful, its arguably the best looking city we've been to so far!

We haven't done too much touristy stuff coz its been new years and we've been lazy but we've done a few explores, seen some nice buildings, chilled on the island area in the middle of the river, walked down a cramped but vibrant market, and made some beats in a very very snazzy library!

We went to a relly really cool bar the night after new years called Szimpla Kert. It had so many rooms and areas and had such a cool decor. The building was kinda like a third world jail with graffiti and chunks scratched off the walls but then it was busily decorated with heaps n heaps of random accessories. I think it might be the coolest bar I've ever been to! We went with some Austrian people we met on new years. We were all quite hungover so just sat at a table playing cards. (My pictures sucked so this ones from google ahah)

I also saw some juice being sold that boasted "added sugar". You don't see that everyday ahahaha.

Budapest: the best laid plans etc.

      October 14, 2019 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

There are two types of holidaying. There's the type where it's a guided tour and others do every bit of planning and organising for you. Things generally go to plan and the organisers do most of the worrying on your behalf. It has a lot of appeal. The river cruise component of this holiday was certainly like that and it worked really well.
The second type is where you do your own organising. There's more worrying and more setbacks, but so too there is a greater number pleasant surprises.
This day was typical, with its highs and lows. We needed to attend to some domestic arrangements, ie dealing with a half suitcase of dirty washing. Thanks to Mr Google it's dead easy these days to identify the nearest laundromat. This we did, and then headed there by tram and on foot which took us about half an hour. Even with all its artificial intelligence Google can't identify which laundromat is going to have most of its instructions in Hungarian and is going to swallow up $12 worth of your hard-earned without doing anything for you in return.
After retrieving the unwashed items from the stubborn machine and jamming them back into our bag we walked another couple of kilometres to the next nearest laundromat. Fortunately this one was both cooperative and comfortable to wait in, but by the time we got back to our hotel the morning had disappeared. Not what we had planned.
Our plan for the afternoon then was a visit to the Grand Synagogue, one of the main tourist attractions in this fascinating city. Panni had very kindly bought for us a really good guide book of Budapest, and this helped greatly both with our planning and our navigation. By now we were beginning to find our way around a little better and were even becoming more confident on public transport. Having the transport passes makes a big difference. If you make a mistake it's easy enough to jump back on a tram, train or bus which is heading back to where you started, and it doesn't cost you any more.
We got to the synagogue mid-afternoon only to find that it had closed at 2pm and was going to remain closed for the next two days for what the notice said was a religious holiday. We assume this is Sukkot. In theory we should still be able to get there on our very last day, though we expect it to be busier than usual after the holiday.
High on our list was a visit for coffee and cake to the 160 year old famous coffee house of Gerbeaud. It is up there with Maxim's in Paris, Tiffany's in New York and Sacher Hotel in Vienna as one of those really elegant places where one goes, even if it is only to say that one has been.
As expected, it was really enjoyable, even if we were unable to snag one of the few outdoor tables on this perfect autumn day. Mary chose an Esterházy cake to go with her cappuccino while Brian couldn't resist his favourite Hungarian cake, dobos torte, to accompany his espresso. In these elegant surroundings the $A42 bill did not seem excessive.
So far, we have described the bare bones of our afternoon activities but in truth there was much more. In our previous visits we hadn't spent any time in this area of the city so hadn't fully realised how many elegant buildings Budapest contains. Much of our afternoon was spent with Brian taking his time and composing photos which he hopes will do the place justice. It was certainly a a perfect day for photographs. In both daytime and nighttime there are so many sights that you could blindfold someone, give them a camera and get them to take pictures at random. Wherever one turns there are great views, so chances are that blindfolded person would still manage to get some pretty good pictures.

      A very happy 50th anniversary

      August 26, 2017 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We were up bright and early, ate a leisurely breakfast, wished each other a happy wedding anniversary and we were off, exploring. So much to see so little time. Our phone had buzzed us with a warning of heatwave conditions, but we wanted to see as much of Budapest as possible. We wandered along this (the Buda) side of the Danube then crossed to the Pest side via the historic Chain Bridge. We then spent a lot of time exploring the Parliament Square and surroundings, with Brian concentrating on trying to get the perfect photo. As well as we travellers, all of the most popular places are filled with tourists whose only interest is in taking selfies, and who invariably get in the way when one is trying to take advantage of that Kodak momernt. As with our 2014 trip, Brian is going to have to Photoshop out all the extraneous tourists, parked cars, overflowing rubbish bins and so on.

By the time reached our hotel in the mid-afternoon, we were footsore and hot, but we'd thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Brian has two second cousins in Budapest whom he had never met, but who are close to his cousin Panni. One of them, Zsuzsi (Susie) had invited us over to her place for afternoon tea. We arrived there late afternoon, and met Zsuzsi, her husband Feri and son Adam. We were made most welcome. They live in a very old apartment building, but have renovated their own apartment, which is now very modern and comfortable.

We spoke for several hours, much of it about family history, but also about Hungarianhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/middle-… life generally under the Germans then the Russians and then today's regime. Very interesting.

Panni dropped us off at her place and we then wandered back towards our hotel. After the big afternoon tea neither of us was terribly hungry, but we felt that we should at least have an anniversary meal and bottle of wine. The restaurant we chose turned out to be quite good, but neither of us was able to do justice to the giant-sized portions of traditional Hungarian dishes which we'd ordered. We did however manage to finish off a celebratory bottle of beautiful Hungarian red.

By that time we were exhausted and well and truly ready to hit the sack.

      Ile Marguerite

      September 18, 2018 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Abendliches Budapest

      November 1, 2018 in Hungary ⋅ 🌙 16 °C
