Grand Golden Circle Tour - pingvellir

      February 16 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

      World’s First Parliament

      July 22, 2022 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

See how far away Larry’s standing? The acoustics are such that he could speak softly and I could hear him as if he were standing beside me!

Starting in the year 930, Vikings met here once a year to hash out disagreements and settle on laws. Historians consider this to be the world’s first parliament.

This spot is called Logberg, which means “law rock.” (The spot was chosen for the acoustics I mentioned earlier.)

Until they developed a written language, every year certain men would stand here and recite the laws to the assembly from memory.

      Iceland (Golden Circle Day)

      June 10, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      Today we spent our time exploring the Golden Circle of Iceland, making a number of stops along the way, including;
-Gulfoss: Iceland’s most photographed waterfall - very beautiful!
-Geyser: this is the place where the term ‘geyser’ comes from and we enjoyed a nice walk up to a viewpoint to see the Strokkur geyser erupt a few times!
-Bruarfoss: another nice (lesser known) waterfall with very liand the final offical waterfall of our Iceland trip!
-Efstidalur Farm: rural farm where we saw cows and horses as well as trying the ice cream made at the farm from the cows milk
-Thingvellir National Park: the site where two tectonic plates meet. It was very cool seeing how the rock faces had split apart from each other. It is also the historical site where parliament used to be held and so contained some cool buildings such as a chapel and the prime ministers summer residence. We also then saw our surprise last waterfall of Iceland!
-Kerid Crater: our last stop of the day to see naturally occurring crater due to tectonic movement.

We then made our way to the campsite which was at a scout centre and had some cool facilities like an obstacle course and frisbee golf course. We had some noodles for dinner and played some cards in the common area :)

      Þingvellir National Park

      July 7, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

First stop on our final day road tripping Iceland- before we arrive in Reykjavik- is Þingvellir National Park, and despite all the beauty we have seen this is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reason is that when Iceland was being settled during the Norse period (around 930AD), over thirty ruling chiefs met here for the first time to discuss law on the island and to create a commonwealth. The chiefs in meeting created the Althingi system of governance which was in effect a de-facto parliament. This makes Þingvellir the original site of the world’s longest running, still ongoing parliament. This was the site in the photographs with the flag pole, it is called “Law Rock” and has since been used for many different Icelandic events such as when they became independent after WW2 and other significant events.

More interesting is that the national park sits between two tectonic plates, with Iceland being the only place in the world where this rift is above sea-level. In the photographs you can see that after we parked the car we went down into a valley, it is here that you can clearly see the North American plate towering above you and the Öxaráfoss waterfall cascading over the side of it.

THINGVELLIR, GEYSIR, GULFOSS (& MT ESJA)

      June 4, 2018 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

I'm driving in Iceland!! It's fun.

The first day with car was a bit cold, drizzly, and cloudy, so we had an easy day driving 30 minutes north to Mt Esja, which we hiked up! Unfortunately the panoramic views were absent after a point due to cloud cover, but it was still gorgeous!

Afterwards we warmed up at the massive Laugardarslaug pool complex- dipping ourselves in 42C pots until cooked, then plunging into 5C pots. Fun.

Yesterday the sun came out for our big Golden Circle trip, a must-do on the tourist itinerary. The drive to Thingvellir National Park was like a moonscape. The clouds were dark, gray, and low at that stage so it was an eerie feeling, like you're in the middle of nowhere. But by the time we arrived at the Thingvellir car park, the sun had come out and so had the tour buses! Thingvellir was the site of the first parliament in Iceland, where all the Viking chieftains gathered once each year to settle feuds, make laws (on the Law Rock), etc. It is the site where the Vikings (under pressure from Norway) gave into Christianity and 'converted' a bit reluctantly- the head pagan priest Thorgeir threw his idols over the waterfall. So that was that. AND Thingvellir is the site of the Silfra Fissure- the division of the 2 tectonic plates between America and Europe. The water is unbelievably clear (& cold!!) and you fill up your water bottles and drink straight out of it. Mmmmm! We thought you had to be 12 to snorkel there, so we (Buz!) walked to the info booth with a confident lie ("our 12 & 13 year old sons would like to snorkel") only to be told minimum age is 14!

Geysir (a geiser) was next - fun to watch it erupt every 5 to 10 minutes.

Finally, the big waterfall Gullfoss, with a huge rainbow over it. The boys had great fun angling photos to make it look like they could eat rainbows (among other body functions whose photos won't be selected on Find Penguins!!!)

We stopped by Bru farm on the way home to feed 'horse candy' to the Icelandic horses.

Quiet day today, lunch and cards in town and a short drive along the waterfront. Tomorrow is another hike to some natural hot springs.

      Pingvellir

      July 22, 2017 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

      December 30, 2019 in Iceland ⋅ 1 °C

Read more

      126 - Þingvellir

      July 18, 2014 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C
