Gerðuberg ist aus geflossener basaltischen Lava entstanden, die vom Meer abgekühlt, in sehr gleichmäßig verlaufenden Säulen erstarrt ist. Diese sind zwischen 1 und 1,5 m breit und 7 bis 14 m hoch.
