    • Day 34

      Banda Aceh

      February 10 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

19 years since my last visit.
It’s almost as if tsunami never happened. It’s now a bustling city again. Still couldn’t resist revisiting the PLN ship that was carried 5km inland by the wave, coming to rest atop 2 houses in a wealthy neighbourhood.
We also made a quick visit to the Aceh Tsunami Museum. Very emotional to see those images again. Does not feel like almost 20 years ago.

    • Day 97–99

      Sumatras nordspids

      January 1 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Byen er bl.a. kendt for mere end 75.000 døde under tsunamien i 2004.

    • Day 27

      Banda Aceh

      January 8, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Koupi hrebinku moje uspesna "to do" mise v podstate skoncila. No super :-(.
No evidentne jedini turisti v celem sirem meste.
Vlny tu pry dosahovaly az do vysky 18 metru. Skoda, ze muzeum (vstup zdarma, v patek od 12 do 2 zavreno - jako ostatne uplne vse - kvuli tradicni modlitbe, hm) venovane teto udalosti a jejim obetem nedokazali zpracovat lip. Nekvalitni fotky, hora gramatickych chyb, amaterismus nejvyssiho stupne a bohuzel nevyuzita prilezitost. Ktera pada i na hlavu zemim, co muzeum a pamatnik v nedalekem parku (a samozrejme humanitarni pomoc) sponzorovaly. Vcetne CR. Priste prosim lepe pohlidat.
Docela sranda. Ale ne uplne levna - 35 000 :-(. Tony neumi smlouvat, beeee :-/.

    • Day 1

      Visiting Masjit Raya Baiturrahman

      February 13, 2021 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Masjit Raya Baiturrahman is the most famous landmark of Banda Aceh. This reason for this is not its undeniable beauty and originality (no other mosque in Indonesia looks like this) but the sad fame it gained after the 2004 Tsunami when it was one of the only buildings that survived the catastrophy.Read more

    • Day 191

      Banda Aceh, Indonesia

      August 24, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

One night stopover on my way to meet up with the ol' ball and chain! Joking, can't wait to see her! Applied for my visa extension which was actually relatively painless and my hostel owner really helped me out I'm a lot (recommend the Wisma Tsacita to anyone staying in BA) so a productive day 👍 the city itself seems in an evolution stage which has aspects of a "modern" city but also retains some of what I'd expected to see (like in Medan) although I didn't see lots of the city as it was pouring with rain and most of what I saw was from sidecar of a motorbike. The contrast of buildings is likely due to the massive rebuilding that took place after the tsunami, as awful as that kind of destruction is, it gives a humans a platform on which to build again, which doesn't have to be the same as what came before...Read more
