Hunger

Frühstück blieb heute eine Wunschvorstellung, hatten doch beide ortsansässigen Lokalitäten um 08.30 Uhr ihre Pforten verschlossen.
Also losgehen und auf unsere Proteinriegel vertrauen!!!

Schnell sind die ersten kanadischen Hiker eingeholt. Kurzes Hallo und überraschend leichtfüßig geht’s bergauf, auch wenn sich zwei Tassen Kaffee nicht unbedingt leistungsmindernt ausgewirkt hätten. Mitwanderer die vereinzelt unterwegs sind, sind mittlerweile allesamt bekannt, demnach Hallo hier und Hallo da.
Schließlich, breitet sich dann doch ein leichtes Hungergefühl aus. Wir ‚sprinten‘ die nächste Anhöhe hinauf und checken die Rucksackrationen…, besagte Proteinriegel und etwas Obst, that’s it!!!
Nach kurzer Pause geht’s über matschige Feldwege weiter Richtung Sneem.
Irgendwie nicht mein Tag heute, also stecke ich die Kopfhörer ins Ohr und lasse mich von Paulo Coelhos Alchimisten begleiten. Eine wunderbare Geschichte und passend auf jedem Trail…

Die letzten Kilometer heißt es Asphalt schlucken. Schnurstracks zieht sich die kleine Straße dahin, bis wir unvermittelt in Sneem vor unserem B&B stehen.
Hier geht’s zuerst einmal an die Nahrungsaufnahme, bevor uns anschließend eine wohltuend warme Dusche erwartet.
Der kleine Ort dient als allgemeiner Zwischenstopp auf dem Kerryway und so treffen wir auch am heutigen Abend während eines Ortsbummel auf einige Gleichgesinnte.

Traveler Hunger kenne ich auch aus den Pyrenäen. Irgendwann schaltet der Körper auf Fettverbrennung um. Dazu muss man aber ordentlich trinken.

In Sneem, we made a short stop so people could get an ice cream, use the bathroom or, in my case, recover from the onset of motion sickness as the road had been a bit too bumpy and curvy... 🤢🤢

Sneem is a picturesque village of traditional buildings, pubs, craft shops and ice-cream parlours, painted in an array of colours. It has a famous Gaelic footballer called John Eagan and Sneem's Irish name, 'tSnaidhm' means 'The Knot'.Read more

Caherdaniel to Sneem

During this night the rain drops where clattering against the window with force and there was strong wind. All our fears seemed to come true. But as the morning broke in the wind was weaker and the rain nearly stopped. After the Irish breakfast, we got out, guess wha,t it was still dry. But it only took the first 2 km to began raining and didn't stop until we arrived. The path wasn't too boggy, but there was dense fog all around us. From time to time, we were greeted by a pair of lambs. The only people we met was a belgian couple we had already met several days before.

After a rather fast walk of about 4,5 hours, we arrived in Sneem, a small town. Sneem is knows for the visits of General De Gaulle, the former french President. There is a commemoration monument at one of the main places.
The meaning of Sneem is knot. In the middle of Sneem is a bridge, that ties together both halves of Sneem. This is one of the numerous origins of the name.

We then arrived at our final destination of today, which was the Sneem Hotel, a big hotel with luxury accommodation. It felt a bit unusual to arrive here after all the stays in B&B's.Read more

Comme nous l'avait prédit la proprio, la nuit fût “peacefull"! Un temps d’avril c'est installé pour la journée: des averses alternent avec du soleil et pas mal de vent. Nous quittons notre place “balcon" et rejoignons la côte nord du Ring of Beara. Kenmare, petite ville animée et notre premier stop ce matin, est la porte d'entrée du Ring of Kerry, prochain “doigt" sur notre périple. Nous quittons le littoral pour l'intérieur (où on porterait la bague). La vue depuis le col Moll's Gap sur les lacs à nos pieds est splendide. Killarney et le Parc National du même nom attirent énormément de touristes. Ce qu'on constate illico, quand on veut se garer. En plus, cette ville célèbre cette semaine des concours hippiques, qui ont fait affluer plein de monde. Le meilleur Fish & Chips de Killarney est servi au Quinlans Seafood, selon le Routard, on souscrit. Ross Castle, une forteresse-tour du XVE, au bord du lac Leane, était toujours habitée jusque dans les années 1960. Depuis qu'elle est propriété d'État, elle a été rénovée selon les plans d'époque. La visite guidée est très instructive. Faut changer nos plans pour la nuit, car désormais l'overnight-parking n'est plus permis au château. Nous quittons Killarney encore ce soir, la route jusqu'au col sera fermée demain matin, course à pied oblige! Sneem, petite ville à l'embouchure de la rivière du même nom, sera notre lieu d'étape.Read more

Our next stop after leaving Kenmare was the village of Sneem. What caught our attention here were some colorful buildings and a stone bridge crossing the estuary of the River Sneem.

We parked the car near a coffee shop from which Mui picked up a cup of joe. We would have gotten some doughnuts from the “Wholly Dough” food truck that was parked in the “designated casual trading area,” but it was locked up tight.

As was the case in Kenmare, Sneem seemed deserted. A curious situation on a Monday morning. After wandering around for a bit, we resumed our drive.Read more

Couple nights at the best camper site we’ve been too in terms of flat spots, lots of space, and beautiful views from the van :)! Convience of being below the tiny village of Sneem with its many pubs and dining options....

Vanlife requires the occasional toilet emptying and water filling up....so sometimes we need to stay at places with facilities - but this one felt like wild camping as the tide came in and out from infront of our bedroom door..Read more

Sneem is a village situated on the Iveragh Peninsula (part of the Ring of Kerry), in County Kerry, in the southwest of Ireland. It lies on the estuary of the River Sneem.
