      Castle On The Hill - Ed Sheeran

      We woke up in the dark this morning to catch our ride to Ashford Castle. The drive took three hours — others chatted as I napped. When we arrived, our driver Kieran was very kind and gave us a quick tour of the grounds before dropping us at The Lodge. For another 2 1/2 hours we sat in front of the fire, drinking and eating lunch. Around 2:10 we all put on waterproof gear to brave the outdoors, and the shuttle brought us to the falconry. We were met by our lovely guide Rory, who gave us a quick rundown of the birds before we took two hawks on a walk. It was incredible, having the hawks flying around and landing on your arm. After an amazing few hours, we went back to the Lodge and chilled. My parents and I got drinks at half six, then met Gram and Pop for dinner.       Der King von Cong

      Cong - so heisst der unscheinbare Ort Mitten in der Connemara Region. Gelegen zwischen dem Lough Mask und dem Lough Corib, der später in die Galway Bay mündet, so zerrt Cong (wie doch einige Ortschaften an der Westküste Irlands) von vergangenen Tagen. Vor 70 Jahren, 1952 wurde in Cong und Umgebung die romantische Komödie "The quiet Man" mit John Wayne und Maureen O'Hara in den Hauptrollen gedreht. Noch heute kann man in dem Ort, der Kaum grösser als Twann ist, ein Museum, unzählige Souvenirs (dazu auch deutlich in die Jahre gekommene Antiquitäten und Souvenirläden) entdecken und natürlich kaufen. In rund einer Stunde hat man aber den Stadtkern ausgiebig studiert und kann sich der wunderschönen Umgebung widmen.

      Dazu zählt offensichtlich, weil direkt neben den Häusern der Stadt gelegen die Cong Abbey und die grosszügige Gartenanlage, die direkt zum Cong River führt (vgl. Bild 4). Wüsste man es nicht, so würde man nicht erahnen, welche exklusive, aber schöne Welt sich etwas hinter dem Fluss Cong, direkt am Lough Corib befindet - das berühmte und wahnsinnig imposante Ashford Castle. (Bild 6) Ab 750 Euro pro Nacht kann man es sich hier gutgehen lassen. Wir verzichten darauf und machen etwas viel cooleres :-) Wir haben einen private Walk bei der ca. 10 Minuten vom Castle entfernten Falconry of Ireland gebucht.

      Jonathan empfängt uns pünktlich und zeigt uns stolz das Reich der Habichte und Eulen und vermittelt uns glaubwürdig, dass es den Tieren hier sehr gut geht - sie sind zwar in Gefangenschaft, allerdings würden sie den Ort auch nicht mehr freiwillig verlassen, da hier ausserordentlich gut zu ihnen geschaut wird.
      Wir machen einen rund einstündigen Walk im wunderschönen Wald des Ashford Castle bei herrlichem Sonnenschein. Jonathan führt uns in die Falknerei ein und beantwortet geduldig und breitwillig unsere Fragen. Zudem - natürlich das Highlight dürfen wir mit Stoker (Bild 1 und letztes Bild, dort auch mit Jonathan) etwas durch den Wald streunen. Er wird mit Essen angelockt und landet immer elegant auf den Handschuhen, die Sonja und ich dabei tragen. Natürlich gibs dann auch einen Happen Hänchen. Das Tier zu halten und es aus der Nähe zu bewundern ist unglaublich imposant. Wenn Stoker dann mal 2-3 Minuten nichts zu essen erhält, so jagt er im Wald selber nach Mäusen, sehr zu seinem Vergnügen und zur "Unterhaltung" für uns Begleiter. Stoker ist der wahre König von Cong und beindruckt uns tief.

      Nachdem wir zurück in der Falknerei sind, dürfen wir auch noch Dingle fliegen (lassen) und füttern, ein weiteres Highlight des Nachmittages. (Bild 2) Müde, aber sehr zufrieden und mit vielen Eindrücken treten wir die Rückreise nach Clifden an, wo wir nur noch was Essen, ehe wir uns dem Schlaf hingeben.

      Cong

      We left Sligo and travelled down the road known as the Wild Atlantic Way heading to Galway, travelling through County Mayo and into County Galway.

      Our first stop was the little town of Cong (pop'n 924). It straddles the border of County Mayo and County Galway and our visit there was a highlight. It has a pretty river, woodlands and ruined monastery. The town dates from the 13th century. It is famous as the town where the 1952 Oscar winning movie The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was filmed.Read more

      Cong Abbey

      We got to see some of the areas where The Quiet Man was filmed! Such a cute town. I love the quote on the plaque. One of the pictures shows the fishing pole from where the priest was fishing when the big fight broke out.
      We also drove the grounds of Ashford Castle. Oh my! I wish we could have stayed there. But at $2500 per room, per night....not possible.      Read more

      A 40km da Galway, andiamo verso il Connemara alla volta della nostra accommodation per questa notte. Una farmhouse con tanto di gregge di pecore annesso.       Connemara, Cong bus tour

      I booked another night in the hostel today so I could take this bus trip. It was a trip through a national park, friar ruins, abbeys and a fjord along the Atlantic Ocean. Again I lucked out with the weather. First stop was to Ross Errily Abbey ruins, lived in by Fransiscan monks until 1742. It was attacked three times. Next stop was Cong where the 1951 movie Quiet man was filmed starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. I stopped here to grab a bowl of hot soup because lunch was going to be at two and I've had this lingering cold for three days now.Read more

      Ashford Castle

      As we were leaving Cong, a sign for Ashford Castle caught my eye. I didn’t know much about the place, but I recalled seeing some photos of the castle and thought it quite photogenic. I had also read that scenes for “The Quiet Man” had been filmed here. Since boat tours on Lough Corrib stop here to drop off passengers for a roam about the grounds, I figured we could explore at our leisure as well. So, we headed off to the castle.

      Turns out the castle, a mix of Medieval and Victorian styles — the former dating back to 1228 and the latter added in the mid 1880s — is now a high end hotel. Only two of the inland-facing towers are apparently original ... all else added when the castle was turned into a hotel. Seeing the castle in person, it looked quite familiar. A quick web search revealed that it had been used for the French court scenes in the TV series, “Reign.”

      The guard who greeted us said that we were free to wander around the gardens, but the interior of the buildings were off limits to all but paying guests. No problem. Turns out that the lake-side grounds were also off limits, but we didn’t see the sign until after we’d walked down to take photos. Ooops!

      After the hubbub of Cong, the grounds of the castle provided a peaceful haven. With the weather still cooperating, we had ourselves a leisurely stroll as we enjoyed the beautifully landscaped gardens.      Read more

      Instead of retracing our drive along the coast, we kept going from Roundstone to make a loop. Our hope was that by the time we got to Connemara National Park we’d have better weather to at least enjoy a drive through the grounds. No can do. It was pouring so much that we couldn’t even get a decent glimpse of the scenery.

      What to do? Well, spotting patches of blue sky in the far distance, we decided to head in that direction. Maybe our luck would hold in Cong, the village which is supposed to be the setting of the John Wayne/Maureen O’Hara movie, “The Quiet Man.”

      Turns out that is only partially true. As seems to be the case with most movies, the scenes were filmed in multiple locations in the vicinity. Regardless, the village has quite a “tourism industry” built around the movie. The place was overrun with hordes of people participating in “Quiet Man” tours, visiting the “Quiet Man” museum, or seeking out “Quiet Man” set locations using maps sold for €5 in various shops.

      We skipped all that. But since we did manage to snag a parking spot, we went for a wander around the village. With the sun shining briefly, we picked up some snacks from the supermarket and sat on the wall overlooking the banks of the River Cong to enjoy a quick al fresco lunch before moving on to find somewhere quieter to explore.       Unexpected encounters

      Today has been more rainy than sunny, but we carried on, doing our Quiet Man movie tour in the rain, but enjoying sunshine while we waited on our bike tour guide, only to be told after an hour that he could not make it. So, we went back to the Lodge and grabbed a couple of their bikes and took off in a period of lovely sunshine to explore the grounds. Hoping to bike on a trail behind Ashford Castle, we were met with a closed gate and another couple on bikes like ours who were studying a map. Thinking they were Lodge guests also, we asked where they were headed, and they said they were trying to find Ashford's "walled gardens" and we explained that they were off limits, only to guests of the castle, to which they replied they were (she was part of the insurance company that had rented out the castle for the top earners and he was a doctor; they were from Nebraska) and after hearing that we were not allowed in, they invited us to tag along on their search with them. Not a rule breaker, I hesitated, but decided to give it a try. The first test was passing the guard at the gate, which he greeted the four of us and we road on. So, we got to see Ashford Castle after all, as after finding the walled garden, they invited us inside for a glimpse, so I got to ooh and awe at the downstairs of the castle, also going upstairs with them on a mini tour of the library and billiard room. (Interesting side note, his name was John and her name was Maureen, just like from the Quiet Man, and they were staying in the same suite that John Wayne stayed in!) They cycled out with us and we said our goodbyes. How cool was that, from disappointment to getting to see something we thought was not going to happen! I love serendipity!
      We are missing our traveling buddies, so the opportunity for conversation and amiable companionship today was a pleasant surprise.
      Dinner was at the Lodge, as it turned very cool and windy with threatening rain.

      Connemara: Cong

      L’ultima zona visitata prima di fare ritorno in Italia è stata la zona del Connemara, ad Ovest di Galaway. E’ una zona verde da girare in macchina, bellissima, soprattutto la costa a Sud di Clifden dove si trovano anche spiaggette tranquille immerse nel verde in cui fermarsi. All’interno del Connemara vi è un parco nazionale che non abbiamo visitato, mentre ci siamo fermate a Cong, dove sorgono una abbazia e un castello magnifico adibito ad hotel, ma di cui si possono visitare i giardini immensi che terminano in un bosco. Si arriva al castello a piedi in 10 minuti oltrepassando l’abbazia oppure in macchina. Il biglietto costa 5 € ma vale la pena farci un giro.Read more
