Adventures Part 2 - Find Your Way

      June 10, 2022 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

After a smooth transition to Shannon Airport, we drove off in an Audi, because they had nothing else to give us! Oh well! It’s very nice but somewhat unique in some of its controls. Certainly takes some getting used to. Oh, and about getting used to things? Eileen starting driving and did fairly well with the left sided driving thing, entering roundabouts. Larry only had the occasional near death experience with a stone wall or two. All was pretty good until we got to our destination for the next 4 days, the town of Dungarvan on the southern coast of the Celtic Sea. What a spectacular gem! It was recommended to us several years ago as a lovely town and great touring spot. HOWEVER, the streets are narrow and we arrived in the middle of the day and we had trouble finding our hotel. Said a few prayers, took a break by the water before plunging back into the street. With some direction from the hotel (Larry actually walked a block to it - we could see it but couldn’t get there!), we found the car park (parking lot). The hotel is restored, very quaint. Met the owner when we checked in. He was delighted that someone had recommended it to us (a travel agent - pre Covid. Thanks Becky) and asked about our home in US. This town reminds us a little of Annapolis. Harbor town. Sailing club. Lots of pubs and restaurants. Lively town center. Then he informs us that we are very lucky to be visiting this weekend - it’s the West Waterford Festival of Food! If you know Larry, you know he was quite pleased. Town will be closed to traffic (yeah) and tents and vendors and food samples galore.
Spent the afternoon exploring. Toured the Dungarvan Castle (seems every area has one!), visited a few pubs and continue the challenge for best seafood chowder. Seems it is a staple on every menu everywhere you go, from pubs to fancy places, served with brown bread. A contender for best so far was at The Local - a tiny hole in the wall pub with fabulous staff. Larry plans to continue his quest throughout the next few weeks! Side note - we both have recovered from our GI issues and thankful that a pint tastes good! Hoping our driver has stayed well.
Finished our evening at the hotel pub, some music. Still struggling with the sunset not happening until after 10pm! The last picture was added to highlight another reason this country is wonderful! - please note choice of cream, ice cream or custard with all desserts. What?? That will be happening tomorrow - too full to enjoy it tonight.

      Rock of Cashel und Dungarven

      May 26, 2022 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

In der Nähe von Kilkenny wurde uns von unserem „Reiseführer“ die Besichtigung des „Rock of Cashel“ ans Herz gelegt; dies liegt im viel besungenen county Tipperary ( „It’s a long, long way to Tipperary).

The first time as a hitchhiker

      June 30, 2018 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Read more

A few nights by the bay

      August 28, 2021 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

We couldn’t resist parking up by the town of Dungarvan for a few nights, as the sun continues to shine and the town has a happy hum about it!

We got lucky with a spot right on the tidal bay, moon rises and sun rises, and the constant lap of the water!

We dined out and enjoyed some outdoor drinks and wandered around the town feeling like happy tourists.

The second day we cooked at home and enjoyed the tide coming in and drifting out…

A great spot on the sunny south, before we head over to west cork later!

      (Feat. Oysters with Yuzu!)

      Back home for some.

      July 29, 2021 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We were up on time and ready to go. I left Jim off and the crew of the boat inside me left me off.
Just as I was leaving, the skipper of the boat inside me told me that they had changed their minds and were staying put, something to do with tomorrow’s weather.
Oh! The few extra hours sleep would have done me no harm at all.

Anyway, Jim was out of the harbour like scalded cat and I too kept going.
It was a breezy SW and the sea was still lumpy after yesterday.
I motorsailed along the coast, tacking as I went along with just the main up.
I’d better get used to having the wind forward of the beam again.
Conditions eased considerable once we got past Tramore Bay and had some shelter from Mine Head.

We entered Dungarvan Harbour and anchored off Ballincourty while we waited for the tide to rise enough to continue up to the town later in the evening.
I decided to make up for my lack of sleep in the morning and had to be woken from my slumbers by the phone, Jim requesting my attendance at dinner. It didn't take me long launch the dinghy and row over

We lifted our anchors at half tide and motored slowly up the channel.
When we got to the town, Jim picked up his mooring but I was unable to pick up my allotted one due to the strong current.
I went to the quay to tie up until the currents eased but it was full of small boats so I went back to have another go at the buoy but was failing miserable until Jim suggested I raft up to ‘Second Chance’ which I did and we had a peaceful calm night.

      Meeting the family.

      July 30, 2021 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

This morning Peter the skipper of ‘Blade Runner’ was leaving and offered his mooring as it turned out the one I had been trying to get on was too shallow for 'Eureka'.
We had met Peter in Dunmore East and it turned out that he and Jim knew each other. Peter is a native of Dungarvan but now living in Arklow

Once tied up we went ashore and met Jim’s family and I was given a tour of the town.
There was much more to see than I realised as I am only normally passing through or stopping for a coffee.
Later we had a lovely dinner with Jim’s extended family before returning to the boats very late.
