      It really leans!

      September 27, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We have arrived in Pisa and after finding a bag b and b... we have arrived at the main attraction... you hear about it and its used a lot in sayings but you are not aware of its sheer magnificence. The tower and the surrounding cathedral are fabulous. The tower really leans over quite a bit, it actually doesn't look like it should stay up.
Now enjoying a pizza in the rain before checking in to our medical tower and then off to the cathedral.

      Pisa

      March 16, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

:DRead more

      Auf dem schiefen Turm

      June 14, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Read more

      Discovering the well known

      August 1, 2020 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After a restless night, the alarm went of at seven. Had a boiled egg and warm Nutella for breakfast...if you might want to know.
We set of for the tower visit at 08.00 and arrived well in time. First in line. That's to my liking.
Got instructions and a 1mtr buzzer.. and of we go.
I have to admit.. this was a good workout.
The experience of walking this leaning tower was special. The view quite nice.
There was not much time. As we were hunted down again for the next load of climbers.
After this, we visited the basilica, and noticed that we did not buy tickets for the Baptisterium. So. Got my phone and credit card to correct this.
After a nice rest on the first floor of the Baptisterium, our phones fully charged, we went off into the city.
Nice place. Narrow streets and beautifully buildings.
Hunger kicked in, so a panini was ordered.
They did their best to make us a vegetarian one. And with success.
Walked around until we found a nice shady park, in which I laid my head down again to have a rest.
After this it was time for an ice cream.
Decided that this was Pisa. And headed back to the campsite.
Gonna take a shower and an easy meal.
Bought on our way home a mosquito net to cover the site windows, so we can leave them safely open this night.
      Hopefully this will work.
Tomorrow. We will aim for Florence.
I do need to check the gearboxoil level. But I can't get underneath. Maybe.. one day..

      Pisa, Italy

      October 4, 2021 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

yesterday very late we arrived in pisa 🏛️ - 1500km, 2 days driving 🚒, the traffic was ok and we had no further irritations. this morning i was quite happy with the hot shower 🛀 and after the breakfast 🥣 i took a walk through pisa. well, it hasn't changed during the last 25 years and i still don't get the attraction. buuuuuuut it's an Italian city, thus you get amazing coffee ☕ and really tasty food 😋.
if we didn't take the ferry 🛳️ in livorno, we would not have stopped in pisa. so this evening we will leave livorno direction palermo over night 🌛 - i'm so much looking forward to sicily ❤️.

      Pisa und sein Turm

      January 18, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

      Pisa

      March 28, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Pisa is another Tuscan city located downriver from Florence near the sea. This city dates back to at least the Etruscans, but its importance is really tied to it's maritime industry, not least during the middle ages when its fleet was involved in numerous battles. Many of these battles occurred as part of the great rivalry with Genoa. Eventually they were defeated and later were taken over by Florence.
Pisa is probably best known for its iconic tower in the 1st picture. This is the bell tower or campanile for the cathedral. The 2nd picture is some of the bells atop the tower to prove I actually did climb up. The 3rd picture looks down on the cathedral from the top of the tower. The baptistry is to the rear and the Camposanto is the arcaded area to the right.
The 4th picture is the cathedral facade. The 5th picture looks along the nave of the cathedral, and the 6th picture is a set of monumental bronze doors, now in the museum with a replica in place at the cathedral. These originals by Bonanno date to the 12th century and depict scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary.
The 7th picture is taken inside the baptistry, It's the largest in Italy with it's octagonal font. I don't recall seeing a raised and carved pulpit in a baptistry before this one. 2 tidbits: The dome is acoustically perfect; and the baptistry leans, too, but not as much as the tower.
The other significant feature at the cathedral plaza is the Camposanto. This is a large cloister that has many large frescoes on the walls and many burials beneath the marble floor. This is a long structure in a rectangle around a central area. The 9th picture looks down one of the sides showing the frescoes and marble floor. The last picture in the central yard area.
