After a brief visit to Murano, famous for glass making, and Burano, known for its lace making, we decided to go back to Burano for our last day in Venice. Like Murano, Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon.
There are only about 50 women who still make the lace by hand. To make the lace the traditional way is time consuming and costly, but it is really interesting to watch. The lace shops are everywhere and plenty of lace items to choose from.
Burano is also known for its brightly coloured homes - we are talking purple, bright blue, dark pink, red! Apparently, the colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colours permitted for that lot.
