      Well, Ciao Pilgrim!

      June 22, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 91 °F

After our walking tour in Florence (“Firenze” to us now), we felt we needed to do some more training for our hike, so we set out to discover a few historical landmarks. We found the Ponte Vecchio (which translates to “Old Bridge”), built in 1345 to cross the Arno River and is one of many engineering achievements in Florence from the Middle Ages. People still live in apartments on that bridge!

We became a bit turned around and lost for an hour or so, but finally found the Basilica of Santa Croce, sometimes called, “the Mausoleum of Italy.” There were so many people dying to get in, that we felt lucky enough to skip the line and walk our Credenziale del Pellegrino (Pilgrim Credential/Passport for The Way of Saint Frances) up for our very first pilgrim stamp. We didn’t feel a thing… and only 35 more to go!

We even fit in a little tour of Dante’s childhood home. And, that place was no joke! It was hell to get there. (That’s divine comedy, people!)

After paying our respects at the tombs of Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli and Michelangelo, we left the cathedral ready to carbo-load today and hike tomorrow.

p.s. If anyone reading this post is worried about our mapping skills (Travis, Jen R, our families, the citizens of Italy…), don’t worry! We are too.

      Giardino Bardini

      June 7, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Read more

      Firenze

      April 24, 2014 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

I only spent a 2 days in Firenze. Here I just walked around the city and enjoyed the sites. on the train i noticed a guy with a Real Madrid shirt on so I asked if he was a fan, it turned out he was from Mexico but hardly know any English. The same night me and the Mexican watched the Madrid v Bayern game in a bar the only way we could communicate was with google translate but i guess sometimes that's all you need, that and football :)Read more

      A Long Journey – part 2

      September 12, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Florence to Naples: having learned our lesson yesterday with the whole getting thrown of the intercity express train debacle we had decided to cough up the extra 10 euros to secure a seat on the Intercity Express from Florence to Naples – not only did this mean the trip would take under 3 hours (as distinct from 7 on the regional trains) but it meant we could relax in comfortable seats, in a quiet, air conditioned carriage, be offered a coffee and a snack and travel at 300km per hour through the country side. Worth it! Leaving the Florentine hills and heading towards Rome we were travelling through farmland (Olives, Grapes and Corn largely) with scattered hill top villages. We had a brief stop in Rome and then on to Naples – arrive there about 15-20 minutes late.Read more

      Firenze & food

      October 7, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We are enjoying our time in Florence, wandering the streets and gardens of the city. And of course eating way too much food.

We started our food tour of Florence with a Tuscan wine flight, beef tartare, risotto, and truffle pasta. It may be my favorite meal to date. It was wonderful.

Later that same day we ate 1.5kg Florentine steak at I Fratellini, it was delicious. Then cue the meat sweats as Igor would call them. We were out of commission the rest of the evening.

After that it was about time to get some exercise - we picked up some local sandwiches and headed to the gardens. We wandered through Giardino Bardini gardens and enjoyed the views of the city.

Über den Vetta Croci Pass nach Florenz

      July 29, 2013 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Route: San Piero – Vetta le Croci Pass (518m) – Florenz
      Unterbringung: Camping „Michelangelo“ in Florenz
      Strecke: 38 Km – 490 Hm
