      At the Binterhof

      July 30, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Well we got to Venice Marco Polo airport! Sadly Michael’s bag did not. It likely is still back in Seattle inside who knows what untagged bag bin because the check-in desk person neglected to tag it properly and when we noticed it untagged going down the conveyer belt they said they’d take care of it. Yeah… so anyway we “get” to go shopping tomorrow since it had all his clothes and all our toiletries. I hope Air Canada enjoys paying for three rain coats, a kids fleece, and some men's wear, and a bunch of toiletries. And a backpack to put it all in. 😒. On a funnier note, I don’t think the dude at the Hertz desk thought that this middle aged gravid American woman really drove a manual.
“You know you rented a manual, right?”
“Yes, I’ve driven a stick shift for years.”
Anyway he upgraded us to an automatic. Haha.
We had an uneventful drive into the mountains and enjoyed a nice evening on the farm. Pizza and South Tyrollean cuisine for supper at the neighboring restaurant. The place is kid heaven. The restaurant has a huge playroom!!! On our way back the apartment we cut across a field and as we approached the farm a little cat ran up to us and showed us her prize—tiny, wriggling mouse.

      Rifugio Firenze

      August 2, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Today we left the Binterhof and stopped for a coffee at the sister restaurant Binta Pub so Annika could take one last dip in the ball pit. Then it was time to hit the road to Val Gardena where we would be catching a Gondola up up up and walk about half an hour to the mountain hut (rifugio in Italian). The road was nuts. Skinny and windy. Always fun when the semi truck came toward us!! (Actually they were incredible drivers—clearing rock walls by inches.)

So there we were at the back of a pack of cars when suddenly this guy wearing a black uniform and holding a lollipop-looking sign motions for us to pull over. Very 'lion takes the weakest wildebeest' sort of thing. He takes my ID and Michael’s (for me that meant passport, WA driver’s license and the oh my god I’m so glad we went to AAA and actually obtained that international driver’s license) and goes away for a while. The other dude with him toted a fun-size machine gun. Like half the size of a Kalashnikov. (The photo included is from Internet. Figured we’d not take a photo at the time…) This was when we learned the difference between carabinieri and polizia. The former is the military and apparently checkpoints are not unusual. Anyway, alles war in Ordnung and we were sent on our way.
In Santa Cristina we found a place to park the car and boarded the gondola. We had much better luck with the weather. It is stunning up here. We checked into our rooms (doubles but Mom is getting basically a single since Annika wanted to bunk with Mama and Papa). Before supper, I freshened up in the room (sink!) and Michael covertly took NSFW photos of me. They will never be public but involved me trying to manipulate my pregnant body such I could shave my legs in the sink to avoid the shower line. Then Michael and I took a little stroll up trail 13 and encountered cows and donkeys while Annika and Grandma Julie had some quality time on the playground. Dinner at the rifugio was great! Micheal and I had polenta with mushrooms and venison and Mom and Annika both had the Wienerschnitzel. While we all ordered only one thing the people around us seemed to eat three times as much. A plate of pasta would come out then another meal then another thing. Impressive. Reminded me of dinner for the Whos in Whoville.

After dinner Mom and I went for a little hike after the meal to see the sun set off the mountains and clouds and Michael and Annika played jenga! Now night falls and morning will be here soon. Annika barely made it through a couple pages.
Can’t wait to see what breakfast will bring!

      Rückblick Woche 1

      July 16, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

      (Nachtrag: Stand Freitag 14.7.)

      Woche 1

      Sonnenloipe & Schneeschuhwanderung

      February 7 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

Read more

      Canyoning

      June 7, 2022 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

      P. S. Wassertemperatur 7 Grad. Arsch kalt! 7mm Neoprenanzug!

      Climbing back up towards Austria

      July 28, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After a nice breakfast climbed back out of the valley. Back to vineyards as well. Random castles and very large snail slugs keeps me amused. Path remains lovely as we head east. Skies start to get stormy and the rain catches up with us. Make it to our campground without getting too wet.Read more

      Tolbach / Dobbiaco

      July 31, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

After breakfast, we took our first day pretty easy. First we stopped at this cheese factory and got to try some local cheeses and learn how they are made. Then a quick hike around Tolbachsee. In town we picked up some stuff so Michael won’t be wearing the same blue jeans and t shirt with a mushroom on it for the rest of his natural life…or at least the next two weeks. This part of Italy is nice for me because while I know maybe twenty Italian words, I speak decent German and everyone up here speaks German. All the towns have two name—German and Italian. With the food and language and architecture I could almost pretend I was in Austria, except shopping is hard because everything in the store with the exception of local products is in Italian. The pharmacy in town had sort of fancy shampoos and lotions but since they were local they explained what they were in German (unscented spf 50 sun cream or whatever). Sorry (not sorry) Air Canada. I probably could have found cheaper stuff at a different store but I wanted to know what I was buying.Read more

      The saga continues…

      August 2, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

So. The lost bag. Apparently it arrived in Venice yesterday. Air Canada—or rather whatever loser people work their call center who clearly just read from a script and don’t actually help you much (talk about an exercise of yelling into the void honestly I think I’ve gone from circle one of Dante’s hell—limbo straight to violence. Though air Canada seems to exist somewhere around eight or nine—fraud and treachery. Okay I’ve lost my way on this post. Anyway we’ve been told we are now the ones that need to contact the airport to get the bag delivered. I mean you know, we speak Italian. 😒 And why precisely would the Venice airport feel any responsibility to schlepp our bag four hours into the Alps? Why did all the numbers air Canada give us end up being disconnected? And why does air Canada not even follow their own guidelines (see page 69 of their idiotic handbook of international travel in the section about lost and delayed bags)??Read more

      Schlafplatz Tag 9

      July 16, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Read more

      Welsberg - Bruneck

      October 6, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 0 °C
