    Monterosso beach day

    July 27, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    We caught an early train to Monterosso and organised beach chairs and umbrellas for the day. We had coffee, went for many swims, lounged around, read, looked at beautiful pebbles, ate pizza, drunk cocktails and relished the sun's warmth. It was wonderful to be still for a day and enjoy the beautiful beach. We could see the five towns lining the steep coastline. The sun set earlier over the mountain so we headed for an early dinner in town and had a traditional style flat oval shaped pasta with anchovies, fennel and breadcrumbs which was quite delicious!Read more

    Portovenere -> La Spezia

    April 11, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

    Today is supposed to be dry but it turns out that today is the worst of all three days. The sky is grey and does not stop raining the whole day.

    We take a ferry from Monterosso to Portovenere, a port city that is supposed filled with romance and poetry. However, with the grey sky, we count ourselves lucky to visit the castle dry.

    After wondering around the small town Center, we take a bus to La Spezia. This is the main town before Cinque Terre. David Matthews is right, better staying in one of the villages than in this town which is just another Italian city.

    Suffering from the rain, shine, sweat, and cold, I catch a cold and feel so run down in the afternoon. After a 3-hour nap that is filled with shivering and cold sweat, I feel absolutely shit. Time for another long sleep to recover.

    Cinque Terre hike

    July 8, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

    We completed the Cinque Terre 11km hike today from Monterosso - Vernazza - Corniglia - Manarola - Riomaggiore starting at 9:45am and finishing at 5pm! The views and little towns along the hike were beautiful and very busy. The trail was very challenging in sections with lots of steep climbs and declines, but it was very worthwhile. When we finally reached Riomaggiore we were knackered and glad to have made the last ferry back to Monterosso.Read more
