The city of romance... and rain!

    September 23 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Our day to give the boys their first debut of the city of love, or should that be the city of water! Yes, it rained! Luckily not all day and in doses of 2min downpours so we still got to enjoy it.

Zac was bursting to do a gondola ride - just as we boarded the heavens opened for the first time. Was almost comical - the gondolier quickly got us under the first bridge where we huddled with another gondola and waited it out. Was easy to see how flooding has become a huge issue, mainly due to the huge cruise ships causing waves. He said locals no longer live on the ground floors.

Despite a bit of rain, it still stole my heart. There is just something about it - wandering around small streets, no cars and the “”wow” as you cross another bridge and look down the canal.

Peggy Guggenheim museum was interesting - thou seeing real life Warhol and Picasso paintings was slightly lost on the little ones!

We had a sunset dinner by the grand canal - in a posh restaurant which I’m sure all the other well dressed elderly folk drinking fine wines really appreciated. Especially when Zac almost set fire to the table by knocking over the tall ornate candle and spreading wax everywhere.

Venice with young children definitely provides a different viewpoint.

(Had to do several posts as too many pics to choose from)

We heard italian roads were bad but...

    September 22 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

... taking 8hrs to do a 3hr trip due to traffic congestion exceeded our expectations! Needless to say it was a very long and slow trip to get to Venice from Croatia, arriving late at night. We did manage to get a few games on foosball and a walk in before we left.

The rain joined us along the way... making driving even more exciting. Our campsite is super cool in that we are parked right up along the waterfront with a view across to Venice and just need to catch a 15min boat into Venice central. I think the 18-30s also think it’s super cool and indulge in the huge bar that plays loud (pretty cool dance) music. Along with the noise coming from the harbour next door, it will make for an exciting nights sleep! (Edit: Actually we had a really great sleep. Clearly we’ve been missing dance music and a white noise background!)Read more

    July 5, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

We had plenty of time to get to our ferry to Patras since it was leaving at 1am. We took a vaporetto to St. Mark's and found that we needed to purchase another ticket to get us to the vaporetto that would take us to Fusina, where the ferry port is. However, the vaporetto failed to mention that the one to Fusina had just finished for the night, so we ended up stuck there. Thankfully, a restaurant owner and his lady friend helped us with alternate plans to get there. We ended up taking a land taxi from Venice to Fusina.

However, when we arrived at Fusina, we discovered that our ferry had been delayed by 7 hours, and there was no way to leave the desolate port. We hunkered down for a night on the floor of the ferry port building, surrounded by mosquitos.

    Immer noch am Kai

    August 4, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    Einschiffung in Venedig.

    September 2, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C
