      Florence - Day 2

      June 29, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Got up this morning and headed straight for the Uffizi gallery, which contained works from Raphael, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, and so many more. Highlighting the Medici family’s mass wealth while documenting works such as the Birth of Venus and sculptures of Roman/Greek Gods and Goddesses. After wandering around the Ponte Vecchio and getting a matcha (I’m too American for my own good), we grabbed sandwiches for dinner from Pino’s! While all of that was so great, I cant lie - my favorite part was buying two bottles of wine, a bunch of cannoli’s and gelato, and sitting on the steps of the Duomo for hours getting wine drunk. We sprinted through the streets of Florence to a Photo Booth and eventually back home. Cant thank these girls enough for being such amazing humans and making this trip something I’ll cherish forever 💘Read more

      Florence and Tuscany

      October 16, 2016 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

So as you can see we're getting a little slower at posting on the blog...it's about week 7 right now so as you can imagine we've been pretty busy! But of course we want to keep you all in the loop so here is a brief post on Florence.

We really enjoyed the city and it helped that Rupal had been there before. What we found most fun about Florence were the streets at night. Deserted after the tourists had gone to bed was when we could really appreciate what the city had to offer. The amazing architecture and culture of renaissance art are still preserved in the city which make you feel like you have some how gone back in time.

We also took a little time to explore Tuscany, the region in which Florence is based. This of course included a wine tour to taste some Chianti Classico. Not only did we enjoy learning about the wine made in the region but we also learnt a lot about olive oil and balsamic which was neat.

We'll be back Florence, you're a pretty magical city!

The quest for a football jersey

      September 27, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Finn has been desperate to buy a soccer jersey for EVER! Today as we wandered through Florence we came across a store totally dedicated to soccer gear AND they have gear for Real Madrid AND they customised the jerseys as you watched which, admittedly, was pretty cool.

Using the money he has been saving up since his birthday and Christmas last year Finn bought the "away jersey" for Real Madrid, got the #7 jersey for Cristiano Ronaldo, and could also get his name on it. One happy boy at the end of it all!

He realised later he didn't have the shorts, so I guess that gives us something to look out for during the rest of the holiday!

      Fresco's in Florence

      July 11, 2016 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Florence is GORGEOUS 💜! Both Steve and I agree that it's our favourite city so far 😍! We would love to come back and explore more of Tuscany in the future, (the list of places we want to travel to gets longer everyday 😄). #bucketlist!

Florence again was action packed for us. We dumped the bags at our accomodation and headed for Piazzale Michelangelo in the 36°C heat! 🌞🌞🌞🌞 (refer to hot, delusional selfies). To get here we crossed Ponte Vecchio - The bridge across the river Arno where many jewelers shops line either side of the bridge, enticing lovers with pricey diamonds! 😍

It's 2 weeks since we arrived in Italy and during this time I've learnt that travelling with a Civil Engineer means going to the top of every tall structure in the city!

In Florence the 'tall structures' are hard to miss! The Campanile Di Giotto (bell tower) and the Santa Maria Duomo stand tall in the Centre of Piazza Del Duomo and they are a must- see! The dome of the Cathedral is immense and you can get up close and personal with the dramatic paintings depicting scenes of Hell, right before popping out of the top to see the pano's of Florence.

A favourite place of ours was the Mercato Centrale - with a traditional food market on the lower level and a modern gourmet food court on the upper level. It was definitely a case of 'eyes bigger than your belly' or 'eyes bigger than our wallet' (in our case) We could have hopped from stand to stand all day long tasting all of Italy's specialities! 😊

On that note we have tasted our fair share of gelato, both tasting a different flavour every day! THEY ARE JUST SO GOOD!!!!

      Florenz und die Aussicht

      April 22, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Mercato Nuovo, Florence

      September 23, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We basically did our own walking tour of Florence and first on the list was the New Markets, Loggia del Mercato Nuovo. While the stalls are similar to what we have at home, the location was not. Held in a loggia built around the middle of the 16th century, it was initially intended for the sale of silk and luxury goods and then for the famous straw hats. Today mainly leather goods and souvenirs are sold. We had been told how busy the market would be and to haggle, haggle, haggle, and that we would be approached as soon as we picked an item up but that was not the case at all. The sellers were not at all interested in selling us anything. Brad was wanting to buy a belt and even Brad didn’t haggle as he really wanted it and thought they wouldn’t care if they lost the sale. Needless to say, he paid too much and even told them to keep the change. It wasn’t the experience we expected to have.

On the southern side of the markets is the bronze fountain of a boar, called Il Porcellino by the locals, which means piglet in Italian. The fountain figure was originally sculptured and cast in 1633 and intended for the Boboli Garden, however the present statue is a modern copy, cast in 1998 and replaced in 2008. Somehow this unassuming fountain has made its way onto the “things to see in Florence” list and copies of this statue can be found around the world, in the Louvre in Paris and even in a Sydney Hospital. If you didn’t know about this famous fountain, you would walk right past it and not even know it was there as it is not huge in statue and not in a prominent location.

A tradition that the Scottish literary traveller Tobias Smollett noted in 1766, and is still followed today, is for visitors to put a coin into the boar’s jaws, with the intent to let it fall through the underlying grating for good luck and then rubbing the boar’s snout to ensure a return to Florence. We made sure we followed this tradition as we would do anything to ensure a return to Italy. The coins are then given to local charities and knowing this, we were quite disgusted to see some of the locals stealing the coins. Brad even called them on it and they backed off.

      Piazza della Signoria, Florence

      September 23, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Next stop was Piazza della Signoria, the L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio and the political focus of the city. The buildings surrounding this square are amazing and some of the most important in the city, including the 14th century Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and the Loggia della Signoria. We didn’t go into any of the buildings this time as it was quite busy but we did have a wander around. Because the Loggia is an open-air sculpture gallery of antique and Renaissance art including the Medici lions, we did get to admire and photograph the statues, along with the other imposing statues surrounding the piazza, including a copy of Michelangelo’s David, the Equestrian Monument of Cosimo I, Hercules and Cacus and the Fountain of Neptune to name a few.

Neptune’s Fountain, even though it was under restoration, what we could see through the gaps was extremely impressive. The great thing about the restoration work is the city have covered the scaffolding with the history of the fountain and it was a very interesting read. It would be great to see it fully restored and working when we return.

It is amazing to see how intricately some of the buildings have been adorned and the craftmanship and artistry of the many sculptures and statues. It is a very impressive square.
