      Côme

      August 12, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Como and Milan

      July 11, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

On our way to Como we stopped in Milan to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper which is a mural painting in a church outside the city centre and the impressive Duomo (cathedral). The painting has been so well restored and depicts the expressions and body language at the moment when Christ told his disciples that one of them would betray him. The basilica next door also has some lovely frescos.
It was a very hot day which made our visit to the Duomo challenging but the church was so impressive. It has 52 columns and too many aspects to mention. Shannon was interested that it held the relics of St Charles Borromeo (her local parish in Sydney), who was the Bishop here. We climbed the stairs to the terrace roof which gave lovely aspects but again was very hot so we couldn’t stay long. We definitely earned our gelato before heading off.
We arrived in Como in time for a meal, a cool shower and bed. Early the next morning there was a big thunderstorm which cooled everything down and we had a lovely cloudy day for our walking tour of Como and a ferry ride on the lake. Our guide was so good in her calm yet passionate commentary and insights. She gave. Some good history lessons for Italy in general and seemed less territorial than most other guides. The lake and the quaint villages are so beautiful and wasn’t too crowded either.
It was so nice just walking around and having meals with Theresa and Shannon. This would be our last evening together before we headed to India and the girls continue their Italian tour to Venice, Florence and Tuscany, Umbria and then a few days in Vienna to visit friends of Shannon’s before they start their World Youth Day pilgrimage, starting in Rome, Assisi and then onto Portugal.
We had a typical Italian aperitif and then a lovely dinner in a local piazza. The meal was lovely and ended with another big storm so we had to run back in the rain which was quite a hoot. And so ended our Europe trip in such a special way with our girls (we missed you Robbie !). As always, Italy was so impressive in so many ways. Next time maybe we need to head South! Ciao!

      Como

      March 15, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We arrived in Como, Italy on Wednesday, March 15th. We flew into Milan airport and picked up our car that we rented for the duration of the trip. It’s a mid size suv, red. We packed in carry on bags and our ski gear in a separate bag. We each have a backpack as well. Somehow it all fit. We drove the hour to Como and found a perfect parking spot. I noticed that there was a school behind us and said I wonder if that’s Tommi’s school. It was! He was outside playing soccer. We got his attention and said Hello. We put our suitcases in the apartment and went to the grocery store. A foreign language grocery store is one of the hardest things to navigate in another country. We got a few essentials, mozzarella, prosciutto, milk and paper towels. Vitto made us one of her amazing crostada’s. We met Vitto, Tommi, Franchi and Nico for dinner at Riva Cafe. The pizza was amazing. They said its the best they have ever had! We agree.Read more

      Como city

      July 20, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our second day in Italy was a day trip to Lake Como and Lake Lugano, and we had an excellent time.
Our itinerary was thus: we travelled with a tour group from Milan to Como city, boarded a huge ferry and floated around the lake for two and a half hours, hopped off at Bellagio for an hour and a half, hopped back onto a different ferry for ten minutes to the other side of the lake, hopped back on the bus to Lugano, wandered around for an hour and a half, and then went back to Milan. Lovely lovely day.Read more

      Lake Como

      July 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

    • Day 17

      George Clooney country

      August 17, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Another beautiful day in paradise. The hot temperatures and humidity had dropped off after last nights rain resulting in perfect weather. Our friends have a house in Como where they normally live which is about 1:15 hours from their holiday house in Gravedona. Today they had things to do in Como so we tagged along and while they did their business we looked around the city and lakeside areas of Como. This is the main city in the Lake Como area with a population of about half a million. It is located at the southern end of the lefthand or western branch of Lake Como and is a busy boating and tourist city.
George Clooney has a house about 15km north of Como. Villa Oleandra is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Como and is large villa that is not visible from the road but can be seen clearly from the water and the ferries passing by.
Carolina has been waiting for George to invite us for coffee or drinks with him at his villa, but from our experiences in Italy so far we realise that either his invitation to us or the information he should have received about our visit here, has most likely been mislaid or misdirected. We know he will be sorry to have missed catching up with us this time but hopefully he will come to see us in Noosa sometime instead. So today we drove past his villa and did not drop in to see him as we did not want to surprise him too much.
Como was again very busy with summer tourists. Sara kindly dropped us off in the city centre and we planned to catch the hydrofoil ferry back to Gravedona at 4:10pm in the afternoon. While Carolina went shopping, Peter stood in a queue at the ferry ticket office for an hour, only to find out that’s this ferry had been cancelled today (this is Italy). So Sara picked us up again when she was leaving to return to Gravedona. In the meantime had a nice time looking around Como for about 3 hours, but it was nice to get way from the crowds and head back to the quieter northern areas of Lake Como.

    • Day 1

      Como

      May 1, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Ciao ciao Svizzera 👋

Unser erster Stopp inkl.

      Como v.2 Day 3, Genova & Portofino

      April 6, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

Today we woke up surprisingly early. We walked to the Como Yacht Club so we could go on Vitto’s boat. She just got it and this was her first time to take it out. We cruised around the lake for a while on the boat and we saw a lot of lakeside villas that were beautiful. We also saw several sea planes take on and land. Tommi and Franchi had to go to tennis so we took the boat back to the marina and helped Vitto put the cover on. After this we walked and had lunch at this place by our house. We ordered a Tacchino cotoletta. We had to ask our waiter what that was. We know a cotoletta is a pounded and fried cutlet but we didn’t know what kind it was. He told us it was a large bat!? Gabe said do you mean a turkey? I translated the word and confirmed it was turkey! It was really good. After lunch, my mom wanted us to go see the Duomo in Como. I'm not sure what our church count is up to. Then we packed up our stuff to leave. We loaded the car and drove straight to Genova. We parked the car and walked around for a while and tried to go eat dinner. It was Holy Thursday and everyone was out to eat. We tried 3 different restaurants. Then we finally settled on this small restaurant on the side of the street. Genova is known for its sauce called the Genovese pesto. It’s a green sauce that tastes very good. I had it on some Gnocchi. After we finished eating we went to get gelato on the boardwalk. After we got gelato we left Genova the plan was to drive to La Spezia and see Cinque Terre. But my parents decided while we were on the way to La Spezia that we did not want to cram in our day in Cinque Terre. We are going to visit that area after Easter. So we found a hotel in Portofino and drove there. It was dark when we arrived but the hotel was very nice. I want to see the water in the morning when we get up.
      Ciao,
      Andrew
