      Italy - Vigevano

      We took a flight from Barcelona to Milan. Collected a rental car at the airport and headed for our destination, a small town in the North of Italy called Vigevano. It was pretty hot and the car aircon was very welcome.

      Spending two months in Spain, we had got used to the language and were able to communicate quite effectively. We felt a little lost as we arrived (although Italian is quite similar to Spanish in many ways). I’m sure it won’t take too long before we feel more comfortable.

      The earliest records of Vigevano date from the 10th century. It is crowned by the Castello Sforzesco, a stronghold rebuilt in the late 1400s. It is famed for its beautiful and large Renaissance "Piazza Ducale" in the centre of the town. We parked our car in the public car park and took a short stroll to our accommodation. We walked past the Cathedral and onto the Piazza. What an incredible sight- lined with restaurants and already for early evening there was a vibe created by the people milling about for Saturday night entertainment. Our accommodation was an apartment right on the piazza - beautifully renovated and steeped in history. We off loaded our bags and hurried back along the Piazza to make it just in time for Mass. On leaving Mass there was a buzz about the piazza and we found a lovely spot for dinner where we had some delicious pasta and local wine. By the time dinner was finished there was even more people about enjoying the summer cooler night time temperature.      Read more

      Abschied von Genua

      Johann plant die neue Route über die Schweiz nach Liechtenstein über Vorarlberg nach Hause....
      Um 6 Uhr läutet unser Wecker, wir machen uns bereit zum Frühstücken auf Deck 11 im Bistro um dann in der Halle auf Deck 6 in der Bar Atmosphäre auf den Zeitpunkt zu warten, wo das Schiff in Genua anlegt.
      Pünktlich um 8 Uhr erleben wir die Einfahrt des Schiffes ins Hafengelände von Genua.
      Unsere Nervosität ist vorhanden, seit 10 Tagen steht das Wohnmobil inmitten Genua auf der Straße und wir sind auf das Schlimmste vorbereitet und hoffen, dass die geplante Tour nach Österreich problemlos durchgeführt werden kann. Punkt 10 Uhr erreichen wir unser Wohnmobil, alles ist in Ordnung. Johann setzt sich hinters Steuer und wir fahren los.
      Vor uns eine Straße mit 30% Neigung und Google führt uns natürlich wie üblich in die Irre, eine scharfe Rechtskurve bei 30% Steigung und eigentlich üppigen Verkehr schadet der Stoßstange.
      Johann hat es immer auf die rechte Seite abgesehen, einige Pflaster verzieren nun diesen Teil des Autos.
      Zum Glück bleiben wir stehen und sehen, dass dort eine Höhenbegrenzung mit 2,8 m ist und die zweite Seite hat eine Höhenbegrenzung mit 2,6 m.
      Wir kehren um und nun beginnt eine Tortur durch Genua und eine kurvige Strecke über Berg und Tal. Nach gefühlten 1000 Kurven beschließen wir die Autobahnstrecke zu wählen.      Read more

      Jour 10 - En route pour Gênes

      Au programme du jour : 100km depuis Milan jusqu’à Villaromagnano un village Piémontais. ✌🏼

      La route était particulièrement plate et nous avons traversé des plaines sous un soleil de plomb. Le mercure affichait 32 degrés à 14h 🥵

      Nous avons déjeuné dans un petit village où nous avons fait la rencontre de locaux charmants qui nous ont offert des tomates de leur jardin pour notre repas 😋
      La journée fut longue mais les paysages splendides à travers champs et vignes 🍇

      Nous avons passé la nuit dans une ancienne villa romaine transformée en maison d’hôte ce qui nous a fait voyager dans le temps. 😴      Read more

      Von Medole nach Tortona

      Gleich in der Früh starteten wir die Tour. Nach nur ca. 5km mussten wir allerdings die erste Pause wegen zu starkem Regen machen. Nach 5min waren wir uns sicher, dass es weniger werden würde allerdings mussten wir nach 10km Schutz unter einem Baum suchen um nicht allzu nass zu werden. Als der Regen nachließ fuhren wir dafür fleißig. Nach Cremona überquerten wir einige male den Po und genossen die Landschaft. Nach der Durchquerung der Innenstadt von Tortona beschlossen wir, am Rande der Stadt, auf einem Acker, unsere Zelte aufzuschlagen. (Kilometer: ca. 190)Read more

      Castelnuovo Scrivia

      Heutiger Plan: am Ostufer des Gardasees entlang fahren bis Sirmione und die Wasserburg besichtigen. Eigentlich. Also bei Sonnenschein auf nach Riva del Garda, aber leider - Uferstraße gesperrt. Also nur ein kurzer Blick auf den Gardasee werfen und zurück auf die Autobahn, Es beginnt zu regnen. Nächste Abfahrt, wieder zum Gardasee, Bardolino, neuer Versuch. Drei Baustellen hintereinander, 20min Stau und vom See vor lauter Regen so gut wie nichts zu sehen. Deshalb beschlossen wir, uns Sirmione für den Rückweg aufzuheben und stattdessen Strecke zu machen. Hier, kurz vor Genua wurde endlich der Himmel wieder heller und der Regen hörte auf.       Quer durch die Po-Ebene

      114km quer durch die Lombardei. Um 9 Uhr los, fast alles entlang des Ticinos. Wunderschöne Velowege, von Dörfchen zu Dörchen vorbei an alten Fabrikhallen, Bauernhöfen, Brücken.

      Vorallem die ersten 60 Kilometer waren wunderschön. Viele hübsche Dörfer mit kleinen Restaurants oder Kaffees und der fabelhafte Radweg direkt am Fluss entlang. Bis nach Milano könnte man so radeln. Doch ich will in den Süden und so verliess ich den Weg in Richtung Genua.

      Auf den nächsten 60km erlebe ich das ungeschminkte Italien, fernab von den Touri Hotspots und Metropolen. Fahre vorbei an Dörfer welche verlassen wirken, Kaum Läden welche noch offen sind, Gebäude und Industriegebiete welche langsam zerfallen. Manchmal fast unglaublich was hier alles an ungenützter und verlassener Infrastruktur steht. Interessant auch die Brücke über den Ticino, welche aus vielen kleinen Schiffen besteht und nicht den Eindruck macht, für ein Jahrhundert gebaut zu sein.

      Je länger der Tag ging, desto mehr wurde mir klar, dass ich heute eine Dusche brauche. Leider gibt es an meinem Ziel (Voghera) keinen Campingplatz und so entschied ich mich für ein B&B.

      Das Wetter ist unglaublich. Ich hatte heute Temperaturen bis zu 33°C.

      Ab Morgen ist es vorbei mit dem gemütlichen "Flussentlang" fahren, denn die ersten Hügel der Toskana stehen vor der Tür😍.

      Das Tagesziel ist erreicht;)

      Heute sind wir viel gefahren. Zuerst Richtung St. Moritz, aber wir mussten aufgrund von Schneefall und rutschiger Straßen umdrehen und wieder zurück Richtung Italien Richtung Merano. Von da dann weiter Richtung Bozen, Bergamo und dann weiter nach Alessandria zur ersten Rallye Party. Über die Hälfte des Tages hat es nur geregnet, nun ist es zum Glück trocken und das Wetter spielt endlich mit👌🏼😄Read more

      Santa Cristina e Bissone 18 miles

      One of those days when the hostess puts out some bits and pieces the night before in your room for your breakfast and you help yourself before you leave. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not so much. Today was a little light but boosted by a half melon which I have been carrying around for the last day and a half. Really needed to eat or ditch as it weighed 700gms.

      Left by 8am and Pavia was still very quiet for my walk out.

      Some of you may have noticed my “fondness” for dogs. I come across many of them on the walk and I have noticed a difference between country dogs and town dogs. Town dogs are just about ok. It isn’t really the dog so much as their owners. They keep the hounds in the garden roaming free to terrorise passers-by but crucially from behind a solid fence. So apart from irritating loud barking I am safe. But out in the country they are often allowed to roam free. Just waiting for the next pilgrim. Highlight of their day I suspect. While I don’t mind being a highlight I would rather I wasn’t a mutt's highlight.

      Although today was longer than yesterday it ended up being a bit easier. Occasional shade, less traffic, several rest stops and a slight wind all helped.
      Churches are proving wonderful rest stops. Unlike bars, cafes and restaurants they are invariably open. Limited menus admittedly.

      I have noticed while looking back at previous photos that each church looks very like every previous one. Some are bigger than others certainly but there is a definite theme going on. I might just sneak a photo of a previous one in some time just to see if anyone spots it. You have been warned.

      Wondered this morning whether it was ok to use them as somewhere to sit while I put my sun tan lotion on. No one else there to ask.

      In a hostel tonight so I think it will be hot. No air-conditioning or even a fan. The guy running it thoughtfully put us three pilgrims in different rooms but I came back from dinner to find that 3 more had arrived and had all joined me. Fab. Just what I need.

      Italians, so almost certainly they are just doing a wee section of the route.
      No choice for dinner. Just one pizzeria in town. It was fine but already getting a little repetitious.      Read more

      Pavia 15 miles

      Was told last night that breakfast was at 7am because other pilgrims had requested that. Bit odd as breakfast is just a cold buffet. Essentially croissant or bread, some meat and cheese (sometimes), yogurt, maybe some fruit, and coffee. Anyway, after what seems like a lifetime of training, I did as I was told. No sign of the other pilgrims. No matter, it got me going before the day got unpleasant. Not sure if I’ve mentioned the heat but it is still over 30C every day even after 7pm. Apart from a couple of days going over the col I feel it has been too hot for weeks now.

      Mostly obvious paths or on road but did have the occasional “try and find the path” moment. Nothing too tricky. What was difficult was finding somewhere to have a seat in the shade for a bite to eat and a rest. Just nothing so I ploughed on and completed the 15 mile day in one go. Did mean I arrived in Pavia for a 1pm lunch prior to checking in at 2pm. Rested up for a couple of hours which meant it was very slightly cooler for having a look at Pavia. Nice covered bridge (recent reconstruction of a 1354 one which itself was a reconstruction of a Roman one). And a couple of churches. Service taking place in one with about 10 attendees at most. Struck by how similar it seemed to my ignorant eye compared to the Church of England one back in Canterbury. Apart from the lack of singing.

      Dinner tonight was at a recommended restaurant nearby where my hostess had arranged a 12€ pilgrim’s menu for her guests. All very well but it meant that instead of a menu which I could take my time over translating the waiter just reeled off some choices and I could pick. At random because my Italian is non-existent. Ended up with spicy pasta followed by fried fish and salad, and then tiramisu. Could have been a lot worse.      Read more
