      Cologne!

      August 21 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We’ve been off line a while as far as this blog is concerned, but we’re have an excuse! We’ve been visiting with the family of Edward’s wife Lena, the Meyers, and haven’t had a free moment. That is one family that knows how to party! Now that we’ve left, we’ll try to catch up.

As you may recall, the trip to Cologne was planned so we could go to a family party celebrating Edward and Lena’s marriage. Her extensive German family (three living grandparents, all sorts of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins) couldn’t attend the wedding in 2021 as the US border was shut down due to Covid shortly before the ceremony. This party was to let her side of the family celebrate the marriage.

Lots of people who, like us, did make it to the wedding also converged on Cologne for this celebration as well, including three of Lena’s bridesmaids and their mothers, Edward’s best man and best woman, two very dear friends of Lana’s parents, another of Edward’s classmates at Brown University, my sister, Patsy, and her husband, Steve, Lena’s three siblings and Karl R and Emma. It was nonstop action for a week!

The train to Cologne on Wednesday was very pleasant. Changing trains in Munich went smoothly. Our train was a bit late, but we’d built in some time between trains, and know the station, so this was not a problem.

Once we arrived in Cologne we walked less than a kilometer to Karl R and Emma’s hotel. It was great to see them, especially in Germany, and we had a very nice dinner and caught up. Karl R, as always, had a lot of business to take care of, including a proposal to get out, but he was still able to spend lots of time with us, and was basically off duty over the weekend. We then Ubered to our hotel, about 25 minutes from down town, not far from where Lena’s parents, Uli snd Wolfgang live.

      Mosaics everywhere in Ravenna

      December 22, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 4 °C

About an hour by train from Bologna, Ravenna has more churches in its historic core than I think I have ever seen. We concentrated on the early Christian ones (4th- 6th centuries) though there were lots of medieval and neoclassical as well. I don’t think I saw any gothic, though. The mosaics are the prime attraction — hard to believe they’re from the 4th and 5th century Some beautiful scenes with maidens and martyrs going to pay homage, lots of bible stories, and some emperors and empresses thrown in for good measure.

We had a good lunch in a recommended place, sharing a risotto and a pizza but leaving more than half of it untouched. I just can’t get used to eating a big meal at noon. One of my favorites of the day was the moving nativity scene in the cathedral. Women drawing water, weaving, spinning; men shoeing horses, at a forge— obviously made with a lot of love.

We didn’t feel like a big meal, so we went to the market area and had a meat and cheese plate. Very very good.

Tomorrow we will explore Bologna. Museums and churches, our daily ritual.
