Took the Metro, then train (very easy) about 40 minutes out of town. Ostia Antica was an ancient Roman city and the port of ancient Rome located at the mouth of the Tiber River, near modern Ostia, 25 km southwest of Rome. Due to silting and the invasion of sand, the site now lies 3 km from the sea. Today, the site is a giant, 100-hectare archaeological park with many excavations.

The entire site is open for exploring and wandering, with a few general information signs about the "districts". The trees and the abundance of wild poppies make it all very peaceful. It was so wild that you can just walk into all these old buildings and even on the 2,000 year old mosaic floors!Read more

So when we got back from Chiavari we took a short train ride to Ostia Antica. This was a small settlement that dates back to 3rd century BC. The buildings were so well preserved that you could imagine what life would have been like. Some of the street signs were still visible.Read more

Ungefähr 30 Kilometer westlich von Rom liegt Ostia Antica. Dies ist die ehemalige Hafenstadt von Rom, wo sich heute auf 100 Hektar ein sehr weitläufiger archäologischer Park mit vielen Ausgrabungen befindet.
Im 7. Jahrhundert vor Christus wurde die Hafenstadt als Handelsstadt und Militärstützpunkt gegründet, doch vor allem im 2. Jahrhundert nach Christus wuchs die Hafenstadt enorm. Die Stadt lag am Fluss Tiber und der Name ‘Ostia’ leitet sich vom lateinischen ostium an, was Flussmündung bedeutet. Da der Hafen im 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. langsam verschlammte, gab es einen langsamen Auszug aus der Stadt, die auf ihrem Höhepunkt gut 100.000 Einwohner hatte.Read more

Eine Antike Ausgrabungsstelle die sehr beeindruckt. Obwohl bisher nur ein drittel der Stadt freigelegt ist, zeigt es die immense Größe dieser Anlage.
