      Ciccetti and Canals

      April 7 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Walked and walked Venice in the mist and in the baking sun 🌞
Wonderful sights around every corner... lots of dead ends, but that's what makes it fun.
Lovely venetian snacks (ciccetti) and so relaxing (out of the main drag)Read more

      Venice

      April 14 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Another early morning this morning because we had to catch a ferry from the main land to the island for our gondola ride through the canals of Venice. We were told this hostel would have the best breakfast on the trip. Yeah, that's not true. It doesn't come anywhere near the Sorrento breakfast lol. The eggs were really watery, and the bacon was slimy and the opposite of crispy. It definitely needed a couple more minutes. They did have yogurt and granola, though, so that's good enough for me. We all got on a train to get to the ferry, both of which were chaotic experiences. Especially finding the right ferry for all 30 of us. Once we finally got there, the first thing I noticed was how many people were on the island. It was packed. We had to speed walk through the crowds of people who walk like their on a Sunday stroll. I actually hate slow walkers. Because it was already 24 degrees at 10 am, Pearse and I had to put sunscreen on, and we were still walking faster. We were broken up into 6 groups with 5 people per boat. The boats are pretty small, so everyone got to know each other pretty well. Maybe some of us got a little too comfortable lol. Despite the boats being small when we passed another boat, we were uncomfortably close to the wall, and the other boat it was so narrow. I really liked the metal jutting out from the front of the boat. It could have been on some warships lol, they were intimidating. They looked like an axe head almost. After the gondolas, we had all day to tour around and see what's up. There was a dinner that Pearse and I didn't sign up for. Bec gave us a challenge where we had to make a collage of different photos. So we got lunch and started getting our photos ready while walking all around Venice. We managed to kill about 3 hours when we met up with a bigger group for some cocktails in the sun. The 8 of us hung out until some of them left for their dinner. The rest of us went to go find a different bar. In hindesite, that was a mistake because we couldn't find anything cheaper or big enough to fit all of us. While looking, Pearse saw an £22 screwdriver. That's actually fucked up lol. After aimlessly walking for what felt like hours, we got back to the original bar. When we got there, everyone was too tired from drinking in the sun to even speak. We just sat there staring off into the distance or on our phones. I really liked Venice, but I don't think we needed 12 hours there. It also doesn't help all we had for lunch was a charcuterie board split between 3 of us. Venice was just too expensive. We took the ferry back to the mainland to catch a train where we finally got to mcdonalds. We rocked up to the hostel with our food and just sat outside with a group just chatting and chilling out. Overall, it was a really fun day, but the sun really drains you.Read more

      Soggy books

      October 22, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

This morning began with a cappuccino and some pastries before we got lost in the narrow streets of Venice.

There was a marathon underway which congested much of the busy areas including St. Mark's Square and most of the main walkways, but we had fun walking beside the barriers for almost an hour watching the world go by.

We ended up at a very cool bookshop where we had the chance to sit in a Gondala - this was nice because we decided against doing a Gondala tour as it was going to be 150/200aud and we'd have to share with 3 other people.

After a while we headed back to the accommodation and undertook some more booking for future travels, trying to keep minimum 2 weeks ahead.

We went for another afternoon walk, this time towards the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and we made our way back following the 'coast'

Dinner was another serving of pasta, which I'm a fan of, before an early night.

      Step count: 23.2k

PS. Didn't mention it yesterday but this hostel sucks, and seems to mainly be populated by mosquitoes

      A night in Venice

      October 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A stroll around Venice in the evening is a beautiful experience. Moving constantly from dark to light and narrow street to open squares. And the music makes it even better. Talking to your soul from around every corner.Read more

Venice sure has a lot of old churches

      October 6, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

European history is inseparable from religion, and Venice has this connection on full display. There are 137 churches in Venice - they are everywhere. All but 3 or 4 are Roman Catholic (there’s one synagogue and 2 or 3 Protestant churches). Many of the church buildings no longer function as churches but are museums or other public spaces. The first 4 photos show the crazily ornate structure of St. Mark’s Basilica. The original building was constructed in the 830s, while the current one began in the year 1063, but had been modified numerous times over the centuries.
Photos 9 - 12 are of Santa Maria della Salute, built in response to a devastating plague that killed one third of Venice’s population in 1630 and ‘31. The church was not to be dedicated to a mere "plague" or patron saint, but to the Virgin Mary, who for many reasons was thought to be a protector of the Republic. Decreed to be built in 1630, it was not completed until 1681. The wooden door must be at least 30 feet tall. I found it curious that the skin color of Mary and Jesus is quite dark in the painting - looking very different than depictions found in the US. I wonder how many US Christians would feel about that.

      Mhmm...PASTA

      September 2, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      Arrivo a La Serenissima!

      June 19, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Venedig - Tag 1

      August 22, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Read more

      Beautiful Venice

      August 22, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

It’s raining in Venice! After a slow start to the morning we headed off to use our hop on hop off water bus pass. It was much cooler today which was great for walking around. Our first stop is St Marks! So many people. We ended up getting tickets to explore the Doges Palace and only had a short wait to get in. Absolutely fantastic and the history was amazing. We spent about two hours wandering through the palace and then the Bridge of Sighs which led to the prison area.

When we finished we were going to wander around but there were way too many people so we jumped back on the bus and went to Murano. It is a beautiful place and much quieter and less tourists. Interesting that some shops had signs saying not Chinese glass, which it wasn’t and it would have been a shame to destroy the local industry with Chinese imports.

Had a yummy pizza on a canal and then looked at the many shops with amazing glass sculptures and jewellery. I was lucky and got a pair of Murano glass earrings. The ride back passed some beautiful buildings and sights!

We got back to the start and then found a little bar for the expected refreshments and then we found a wonderful little restaurant where Pete says he had the best Seafood pasta ever! We shared some yum mussels and made short work of the bowl!

Walked home after Pete had the best Tiramisu ever! We are off to Rome tomorrow.
