      Bushwalk to breakage

      April 21 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We were looking forward to a good long downhill ahead. We thought to take another bush track for fun. It looked marginal, but I said ok.

This tuned out to be an unexpected challenge. The track soon was just an imagined shadow line between the grass, sometimes waist-high. We had several hike-a-bike sections to traverse. But with only a few hundred meters to go, we pushed on to get to the road.

On this bushwalk, things started to go wrong. Rocker's chain got stuck hard, and the front tire went flat. No problem, I'll fix it using my tools. Then at the road, I realized I had left the hand pump in Kiran's house when I repacked.

With the sunset coming, we knew we need help to get off the plateau. We stuck our thumbs out hoping to get a lift. Our angels turned up with a van and brought us to the nearest town. Here a luxury hotel gave us sanctuary, and the succor for our troubles - even if self-inflicted.

I was amazed by the grit of Kiran. And Schopper. Both of them flexed, but did not creak or buckle, under load. Rocker needs help, but that's not a problem for today. Sunsets and dinners are what we need.

      Day 0: Milan to Echevennoz

      Yesterday in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The day started out wet and cold. I managed to catch two trains and two buses today without a hitch - I am very pleased. The only mishap was a broken clip on my backpack. It broke this morning on my way out of the room (I'm obviously not used to having the backpack on yet). Fortunately, I have a crocodile clip that will keep the strap in place. That stap secures my water supply! Thankfully, the rain cleared up as I was making my way through the Aosta Valley (amazingly beautiful. I can'twait to begin walking). The mountains were misty, and as we approached Aosta on the first bus, I saw a lot of snow on the peaks. It was cold in Aosta, and now that I am in Echevennoz, where I am staying tonight; it is freezing! I've decided against taking on Grand Saint Bernard Pass as the forecast for tomorrow is overcast and for Wednesday rain. I have no snow walking experience in good weather, so I have no confidence at all in taking on the mountain in less than ideal conditions at this time of year.Read more

      Milan

      April 21 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

I exhausted myself today walking all over Milan. Thankfully, I'm travelling most of the day tomorrow on train and bus, so I should be rested to start my pilgrimage the day after. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to see the Last Supper, and it was, as expected, the highlight of the day. The tour guide really did enhance the entire experience. I was mistaken; I thought the French had super cute little cars. Well, the Italian's, if Milan is anything to go by, beat them hands down. I've added just one photo so that you can see what I mean. I really have a lot to say about today, but I'm too tired to make the effort. Rest assured, it was memorable and included a lot of churches. I have to add that the hotel I'm staying at has free beer on tap, Heineken, I'm enjoying one in my room right now.Read more

      Küste von Ligurien 🌸🥾🧭

      April 20 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    • Day 2

      Milan

      April 20 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I've made it safe and sound to Milan. My second flight seemed to pass in no time at all. I caught some wonderful sights of snow-capped mountains on the few occasions that the clouds cleared away. I decided not to sleep on my second flight to make sure that I was tired enough to get a good nights rest tonight. That may have been a mistake as I'm sitting here eating dinner feeling a little shaky. I managed to hop on the wrong train from the airport to the city, and I also managed to lock myself out of my hotel safe (staff had to help me regain access). But I was able to recover both mishaps without too much drama. I heard from the BBC tonight that it has been snowing on the Alps. That may impact my ability to get to Grand Saint Bernard Pass. Also, I've had no luck getting tickets to see the Last Supper. I'm pretty heart broken. As I never give up, I will try again tomorrow in person.Read more

    • Day 24

      Venice

      April 14 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Another early morning this morning because we had to catch a ferry from the main land to the island for our gondola ride through the canals of Venice. We were told this hostel would have the best breakfast on the trip. Yeah, that's not true. It doesn't come anywhere near the Sorrento breakfast lol. The eggs were really watery, and the bacon was slimy and the opposite of crispy. It definitely needed a couple more minutes. They did have yogurt and granola, though, so that's good enough for me. We all got on a train to get to the ferry, both of which were chaotic experiences. Especially finding the right ferry for all 30 of us. Once we finally got there, the first thing I noticed was how many people were on the island. It was packed. We had to speed walk through the crowds of people who walk like their on a Sunday stroll. I actually hate slow walkers. Because it was already 24 degrees at 10 am, Pearse and I had to put sunscreen on, and we were still walking faster. We were broken up into 6 groups with 5 people per boat. The boats are pretty small, so everyone got to know each other pretty well. Maybe some of us got a little too comfortable lol. Despite the boats being small when we passed another boat, we were uncomfortably close to the wall, and the other boat it was so narrow. I really liked the metal jutting out from the front of the boat. It could have been on some warships lol, they were intimidating. They looked like an axe head almost. After the gondolas, we had all day to tour around and see what's up. There was a dinner that Pearse and I didn't sign up for. Bec gave us a challenge where we had to make a collage of different photos. So we got lunch and started getting our photos ready while walking all around Venice. We managed to kill about 3 hours when we met up with a bigger group for some cocktails in the sun. The 8 of us hung out until some of them left for their dinner. The rest of us went to go find a different bar. In hindesite, that was a mistake because we couldn't find anything cheaper or big enough to fit all of us. While looking, Pearse saw an £22 screwdriver. That's actually fucked up lol. After aimlessly walking for what felt like hours, we got back to the original bar. When we got there, everyone was too tired from drinking in the sun to even speak. We just sat there staring off into the distance or on our phones. I really liked Venice, but I don't think we needed 12 hours there. It also doesn't help all we had for lunch was a charcuterie board split between 3 of us. Venice was just too expensive. We took the ferry back to the mainland to catch a train where we finally got to mcdonalds. We rocked up to the hostel with our food and just sat outside with a group just chatting and chilling out. Overall, it was a really fun day, but the sun really drains you.Read more

      Morning in Tuscany....

      April 19 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Drove to Pienza, which was beautiful. Then to Montelcino, which was very small and quiet. Then Montepulciano, which was a very big hilly village. Walked through all these villages before stopping for lunch and sitting in the sun.Read more

      Day Twenty-Seven: Pompeii & Rome

      April 11 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Honestly, I am writing this post on the 18th of April... I have been having a blast, but it has been a long drag of getting over a sickness, moving so much, and staying up late. I'm not sure how the others do it. They are partying so much more than me! But for the next while the summaries are going to be a lot shorter. And I'm not a writer, so this all feels like flashbacks to uni ahah. It has been bumming me out. I don't have the posts up, so I'm going to comprise with smaller posts.

To was a lot, and if I wasn't shortening it, this would be a novel. Today, we say Pompeii, the Roman forum, and the colosseum! Honestly, one of the days I was most excited for, and it did live up to the expectations. Firstly, it was weird how Pompeii was just in the middle of a city, I thought it was going to be in the middle of nowhere. But it was a surreal experience walking around something so old and lively back in the day. It was fun just imagining what it would have been like and looked like. Turns out it would have been a very colorful city that had 23 brothels, hahaha. With actually dicks as directions. Our tour guide called them GPS penis. Some of the houses were huge and weirdly shaped for sure. I couldn't imagine living in them. Our tour guide even gave us a longer tour, which was fun. And the volcano actually looks like have of it is missing! I have more fun facts, but I did write some of them down, which is good. Afterward, I had some good soup to help with the hangover, and we were off to Rome. Right when we got there, we had a coffee and went on our Roman Forum and Colosuem tour. I wasn't ready for the forum, but it was actually so cool, holding stuff from before 80 B.C. and even got to see where Julius Cesaer Dead Body was placed and then cremated! And the area where the emperor's house would be, on top of the hill, looking down of everyone. Then, the Colosseum, which I learned, was built 200 years ago and took only 8 years to build. As well as the fact every arch had a statue, so 160 statues since there were 80 archs per level. And it felt way bigger than I was ready for, probably because I saw the small version first. It was very beautiful and fun to just picture what it was like and see photos of what it was. Crazy point is that even at one time, a French family made it into their castle! But then we had an included dinner and went off to bed!
